Day 4 Tuesday: City of Split
In AD 305, the world’s most powerful man, Emperor Diocletian, was faced with the decision on where to spend the rest of his days. Of all of the known world in those times, he chose to build his home in the heart of the region of Dalmatia, setting the first stones in place for the future city of Split, the Diocletian’s Palace. The palace gradually became more like a city within a city, as more and more was added to it. As it stands today, the ruins comprise a mix of architectural styles, with influences harking back to the Roman Empire, as well as the Middle Ages, Gothic and baroque periods.
We start with a tour of the substructures to discover how life in the palace was organized during the Middle Ages while wandering through the labyrinth of tunnels then the Peristyle Square, at the heart of the palace complex and the Cathedral of St Doimnus and the nearby Temple of Jupiter, the gates that once served as entranceways to the palace itself and much more…
