Research

Every night, when we fall asleep, we lose consciousness of the world around us, sometimes submerged in unconscious sleep and sometimes transported by our dreams. My work seeks to identify the physiological mechanisms responsible for such disruptions. Through the exploration of sleep mechanisms and functions, I also seek to understand the neurological bases of consciousness. I study sleep physiology from single neuron to whole brain activity, and how sleepers respond to external sensory information. My work has shown that some aspects of sleep physiology are regulated locally at the cortical level: for example, while some regions show clear signs of deep sleep, others may be closer to wakefulness. I have also studied how this "local sleep" affects cognition and consciousness.
