The exterior of this home was pretty straightforward. Dustin and Hannah wanted to brighten up the dated brick with a traditional white color. With so much brick, we thought it would also be a good idea to break it up a bit with the contrast of black shutters. Dave whipped those up quickly, and they make such a big difference. We also switched out the front door for a more modern statement with a large window, and we finished everything off with fresh landscaping and new outdoor lights.

The living room was large to begin with, but it felt so dark and outdated. We chose to close up the tray ceiling and add recessed lighting to modernize it. For the brick fireplace, Dave built a sleek and sophisticated mantle and then we covered the brick with concrete for a streamline finish. Since the living room was such a big room, we split it up to make it a little more cozy and created a family dining area with a round table. We switched out the ceiling fan for a more modern version and brought in natural fiber lighting for a bit of a California feel. We installed new flooring to the living room and kept it consistent throughout the entire house.

Removing the remainder of the wallpaper and the wall between the kitchen and the living room made a big difference in brightening up the space. I love the color contrast between the darker color on the island and the white quartz countertops. Even though we knocked down a wall of cabinets, the newly installed cabinets and the large island allow this family plenty of storage. Plus, we took a little bit of the old dining room and created a long walk-in pantry. Finally, details like the gorgeous brass knobs and inviting lighting make the kitchen a bright and cheerful gathering place for the Layugens.

The main bedroom needed a simple refresh. A new coat of paint gave the room peaceful, calming effect. We also added new flooring and a huge closet for Hannah and Dustin. The biggest change was the bathroom. This bathroom was so typical of the 1990s and early 2000s when we used to leave a huge open space in the middle of the bathroom to make it seem so luxurious! It was easiest to just gut it all and start over with a clean slate. The large space allowed us to install a free-standing bathtub, a double vanity and a walk-in shower. I love how the large porcelain tile gives off a Calcutta marble feel.

I got a bit too hyped when the trailer came out. I like building and for a short span of my life wanted to be an interior designer. I was ten. Like usual, I used my Sim to play through this pack and live out that dream.

About 20 years ago, my husband and I decided to convert our relationship of a marriage to a divorce. That prompted me to set a goal. I was very clear that I was going to buy a home for my son Michel and I.

The next day, with my son and my nephew onboard, we drove to the neighborhood where the CHEO home was located. As we approached the house I saw a FOR SALE sign on the lawn. I immediately called the real estate agent and booked an appointment to see the house.

About a week later, I was having a conversation with a good friend of mine, Val, a successful woman who is totally into personal development. I was telling her what I had done. She pointed out that I had a small amount of money in a retirement account. She advised me to cash it in because a home is an investment. That idea had never even occurred to me, so I called my investment guy; the amount of money, after penalties and fees, was the exact amount that I had committed to in order to move into that new home. The universe was responding to my plea.

The Teagues moved to LaPlace for work after Hurricane Katrina, but were back in Biloxi after Isaac. They were living only one street over in the same subdivision where Teresa Teague watched the St. Jude Dream home being built. She bought a ticket a few days before the annual drawing after a receiving a letter that some were left.

The couple loved the house. It was filled with custom features: high ceilings, crown molding, granite counter tops and engineered wood flooring. The few problems they found within the first couple of months of moving in, Elliott fixed.

But several months ago, they saw a brown stain on one side of their laundry room ceiling. They thought the air conditioning system was causing the problem, but the air conditioner repairman said not. He discovered crumbling soffit and fascia around the roof.

I completely re-did the guest wing so there are now three bedrooms which are all more modest in size than originally planned, but I think the third bedroom was needed. The bathroom is the same size or slightly bigger since there would need to be more storage and counter space for three bedrooms.

Which leads us to the casual dining area. TV seating to the left, kitchen to the right. It will definitely have a banquette seat and a statement chandelier. There will also be drapery panels across the wall. All to be determined.

I loved reading this and seeing the floor plans for this dream house! What seems at first like it would be way too big, feels so right! I love how you laid it all out! I also like that you are using simple colors to define the spaces before adding decorative colors and patterns! Well done, I would love to see this come to life!!

So as we wonder whether the winner will keep the 2024 HGTV Dream Home, we're taking a look back at previous Dream Home and Smart Home locations. Interestingly, since both contests began in 1997 and 2008, respectively, Florida has been chosen more than any other state.

The home and garden television network announced May 22, 2024, that Marie Fratta from Hawthorne, New York, won the 2024 HGTV Dream Home. Rules state: "One prospective grand prize winner will be selected in a random drawing from among all eligible entries received during the promotion period on approximately Feb. 29, 2024."

If you win the 2024 HGTV Dream Home on Anastasia Island, Florida, near St. Augustine, you can sell the home. If you win the 2024 HGTV Smart Home in Atlanta, Georgia, you can take the cash option, and the house would likely be put on the market. Several past winners of HGTV's popular sweepstakes contests have done that.

According to HGTV's site, here's a list of HGTV Smart Home locations from the start of the contest to present. The 2024 HGTV Smart Home contest officially begins April 19, 2024, with voting at hgtv.com.
