For my design for the Draw100 project, I chose to draw pictures of cats that I have met during my time at ICU. Over the 3+ years I have attended this university, I have been feeding and taking pictures of the cats living on campus. As I grew increasingly familiar with each cat, I noticed key differences in their personality, leading to varying mannerisms when expressing themselves via body language.
Come up with categories for common physical gestures that cats express (Curiosity, Relaxation, Kinship, Hunger, Wariness, "Amae")
Select 16-18 pictures I have previously taken for each category for 100 total pictures.
Draw in a sketchbook in pencil, and digitize them.
Crop the sketches individually, and post them on the website with the cats' names.
Initially, my drawings were very close to how the photos presented the cats, paying close attention to realism and the patterns in their fur. I even placed boxes below them to emulate 3D perspective.
However, as I continued the drawings, I gradually formed a simpler art style that presented them like a caricature to further represent the variation between each gesture.
Work-in-progress art for the "Amae" Category, written on a sketchbook.
I sincerely hope you enjoy looking through my project! Making these drawings was a wonderful experience, though there were many obstacles and technical difficulties along the way.
