What are warts?

warts are extremely common benign and infectious skin neoplasms caused by human papillomavirus (HPV).Although most common in children ,warts are commonly seen in elderly, especially in immunosuppressed patients. Although not usually dangerous ,warts can be spread both on an individual patient and to others.

Warts are pinpoint to several centimeters in size ,verrucous, firm papules, or small plaques .They often rise significantly above the skin and may bleed or hurt with minor trauma.

Types of warts

common warts :often occurs on the face arms,and hands, but can occur anywhere.Range in size from 1mm to 1cm.

Plantar warts :most common on the plantar feet ,often deeper and larger than common warts.They presented as sharply defined,rounded lesions with a rough keratotic surface surrounded by a smooth collar of thickened horn.

Flat warts :small and flat ,flesh-coloured papules most often seen on the face ,dorsal hand, and legs of females who have spread them by shaving .Usually skin colour to greyish brown .They are round or polygonal in shape and vary in size from 1-5 mm in diameter.

Genital warts :Sexually transmitted type of HPV -induced wart. They can cause precancerous changes leading to cancer in females.They are less common in the elderly, although HPV acquired as a young adult may persist.

Incubation period: it ranges between few weeks or more than a year in common and plantar warts and 3 week to 8 month in genital warts.

Prevention

Avoid direct contact with warts.This includes your own warts. 

Don't  pick at warts .picking may spread the virus .

Don't use the same emery board, pumice stone or nail clipper on your warts as you use on your healthy skin and nails.

Don't bite your fingernails.Warts occur more often in skin that has been broken.
