is a Professor of Mathematics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He received a BA from the University of California, Berkeley and a PhD from Columbia University. He had postdoctoral appointments at NASA, Stanford University, and the Université Joseph Fourier in Grenoble, France before moving to Hong Kong in 1993.
