Learn and memorise all the mobs that can be bred here and the items you need to breed them with here. Sniffer is included in both of these but should be disregarded for Draftout. It is not mentioned on this page.
Note that where mobs have more than 1 breeding item, you only need two total (so 1 potato and 1 carrot is enough to breed pigs).
A note about Love Mode: animals fed a breeding item will enter love mode for 30 seconds, and it seeks a mob to breed with also in love mode within 8 blocks during this time. If it fails to breed, that specific mob cannot enter love mode again for 5 minutes. Only adults can breed.
Lowering your simulation distance keeps animals from wandering away from each other, but it also prevents babies from aging.
Chickens breed with any type of seed (most commonly it's going to be Wheat Seeds, but also possibly Beetroot, Melon and Pumpkin seeds; Torchflower Seeds and Pitcher Pod are irrelevant), for more information on how to get seeds see the Obtain 4 Unique Seeds page.
Chickens spawn always in groups of 4, with a 5% chance of each chicken being a chick. Having a low simulation distance means that animals won't wander as much. Chickens are fairly common all throughout the world as long as there is grass, but they are most common in Sparse Jungles and Forests, and slightly less common in Taigas and Savannas.
Cows breed only with Wheat.
Cows will always attempt to spawn in groups of 4, with a 5% chance of spawning as a baby. They are weighted highest in forests, specifically Birch and Dark Oak, with jungles, taigas and savannas being weighted lowest. If you need to overlap breeding with leather, you can kill the other cows while the 2 are breeding. They can generate in village animal pens and plains stables in sets of 2, with a 27% chance per jigsaw (so 46.7% in large animal pens and 61.1% in plains animal pen 3). They can also generate in all village Butcher Shop enclosures with a 37.5% chance.
If you get unlucky and you only have 1 adult cow and 1 baby cow, but you have a lot of wheat, you can grow the baby up to be an adult. Assuming the cow has just started growing, using 30 wheat reduces its growth time to just 1 minute, and 45+ wheat gets it down to around 10 seconds. If the cow has been alive for 5 minutes, 25 wheat takes it to 1 minute and 41+ gets it to 10 seconds.
Sheep only breed with Wheat.
Sheep, like cows, will always attempt to spawn in groups of 4 (5% as babies). They are weighted highest in Cherry Groves and Meadows, and still high in forest biomes. They are lowest in Jungles, Taigas and Savannas. The above notes about wheat and growing baby cows apply exactly the same to sheep, but baby sheep may grow faster, being able to grow quicker when grazing.
Sheep are slightly rarer than cows in village animal pens, on only a 7.7% chance per jigsaw to spawn 2 (7.7% in small pens, 14.81% in large pens). They have a 25% chance of generating in a village Butcher. Note that all village shepherd houses (NB snowy shepherd house cannot generate) will have 2 sheep inside.
Pigs breed with Potatoes (not poisonous potatoes), Carrots and Beetroot.
Potatoes can be found in generic village chests in Snowy, Taiga and Plains villages (not Desert or Savanna). They are also the only 3 village types where potatoes can generate in village farms:
Snowy: 72%
Plains: 14%
Taiga: 14%
Plains (30%) and Snowy (10%) are the only villages where carrots can generate in the farms, but no village chests can have carrots. Carrots and potatoes are a 0.83% chance drop from zombies, husks and zombie villagers each (1.7% chance for either one). Pillager Outpost and Shipwreck food chests can also have carrots and potatoes. Below are the chances that you get enough to breed pigs with from each chest:
Pillager Outpost: 88.03% (if you whiff you get 6-10 wheat instead)
Shipwreck Food Chest: 66.69%
Beetroot can be obtained by breaking fully grown beetroot, which can only be found in villages farms, specifically Plains (5.6%) and Desert (20%). They can also be grown from Beetroot Seeds (see Obtain 4 Unique Seeds) using bone meal.
*If you have breed pigs, Snowy, Plains and Taiga villages are good. Desert requires 2 fully grown/bone mealed Beetroot and Savanna is not sufficient.
Pigs spawn similar to Sheep and Cows, in groups of 4 with a 5% chance of being a baby (and rarely individually). They are more common in Forest biomes than in Taigas and Savannas, and lower weighted in Jungles. Pigs have the same weight in village animal pens (and plains stables) as cows, so 27% in small animal pens, 46.7% in large animal pens, and 37.5% in Butchers to generate 2 pigs.
Spawns per biome for the 4 most ubiquitous mobs (Chicken, Cow, Pig, Sheep), credit: Sam.
Rabbits breed with Carrots, Golden Carrots and Dandelions.
Carrots can be found as above as detailed for Breed Pigs, so Snowy villages are a good option if you have a snowy plains and breed rabbits, but Desert villages will not help you (shipwrecks or bordering grassy biomes are better). Ruined Portals have a 7.3% chance to have 4-12 Golden Carrots. You can find dandelions in nearly any biome with grass (with a few exceptions like Cherry Grove and Swamp), and can bone meal grass in those biomes to get more.
Rabbits spawn in groups of 2-3 most commonly in Deserts, Snowy Plains and Ice Spikes. They are weighted a bit less in Groves and less in Snowy Slopes. These groups of 2-3 will always have 1 adult and 1-2 babies, meaning you will very often have to be luring two rabbits from different spawning locations together. Leads, boats and offhanding breeding item works for this but ideal if you can find 2 close adults. Meadows and Cherry Groves can have much larger goups of 2-6, and rabbits can also spawn in all Taiga biomes in groups of 2-3 (but weighted very low).
Rabbits' growth time is also 20 minutes, and using a breeding item on a baby will also reduce growth time by 10%, so similarly to cow, if you have 30-45 carrots/dandelions/golden carrots, you can grow a baby. You can get enough carrots with 1 carrot + 36 bone meal (aka 4 bone blocks, or 12 bones).
Camels breed with Cactus and spawn only in 2 situations. One Camel will always spawn in a Desert village Meeting Point, and 1 Camel can spawn naturally in Desert biomes, though rarely since most of the spawn weight is on Rabbits. Therefore, in order to breed camels, you will need to get two camels together, which can be laborous since they walk very slowly and lose interest if you get 10 blocks away. If you have a saddle (from a DT or by crafting), you can ride one to the other, which is a lot quicker. (Maybe even sprint hit combo one to the other?)
Cactus should never be a problem to acquire with this goal, especially since many desert village houses will also have potted cactus.
Hoglins can spawn in (1) Crimson Forest Biomes, (2) Bastions.
In Crimson Forests, Hoglins spawn in groups of 3-4 (20% as babies) in any light level and on any block where there is space apart from Nether Wart Blocks and Shroomlights. If you don't have any Hoglins (e.g. if your Crimson Forest is not very big) you can still get them to spawn by lowering rd to 2 to lower what is being counted for the mob cap. Hoglins are the highest weighted mobs in Crimson Forests, being more likely than Piglins and Zombie Piglins.
The Bastion Remnants that Hoglins can spawn in are Bridge and Stables. In Bridge, there are 2 possible spawns on the main bridge area, meaning the chance to have 2 adult Hoglins from a Bridge is 28.44%. In Stables, on average there are 18.4 possible spawns in the Stables area, for an average of 9.81 adult Hoglins per bastion. The Hoglins from these Bastions have the benefit of never being hunted by Piglins.
Hoglins breed with Crimson Fungi. You can find Crimson Fungi most commonly in Crimson Forests (conveniently also where you can find Hoglins), or rarer in Warped Forests. You can also bonemeal nylium (either crimson or warped) for either fungus, though of course crimson fungi from warped forests will still be rare. If you have a Stables bastion, you might not need one of these biomes. Outer stables chests have a 22.8% chance to have 2 or more Crimson Fungi in them, meaning a Stables bastion has around a 60.61% chance of giving you enough to breed hoglins. Even if you whiff, you can still get Crimson Nylium in these chests which you can bone meal for a fungus.
Hoglins can't breed if they're scared, meaning you will want to break any Warped Fungi that you see, as well as breeding them away from your Nether Portal (or portal breaking) and bearing in mind that if you death reset, Respawn Anchors will also scare them. Piglins can hunt your hoglins, so killing them can also be helpful. You can dig down 3, and place a fence above you if being chased by Piglins and Hoglins. Punch baby Hoglins to make them run away, since accidentally giving one a fungus will waste it.
Spawn in any Nether Biome, but only on Lava with air blocks above in groups of 2-4. Baby striders only spawn on top of an adult strider's head, so any given cluster of striders should have enough adults to breed. They breed with Warped Fungi.
Like Crimson Fungi (above), Warped Fungi generate in both nether forest biomes, but more commonly in Warped Forests. You can also bone meal Nylium to obtain it. If you've traded the bastion, you can throw fire res and pearl onto a group while offhanding warped fungi. Otherwise, you often need to bridge out to them while offhanding the fungi. The lower you bridge the better, since your reach from a few blocks up is very limited.
Foxes spawn in any Taiga or Grove biome always in groups of 2-4 with 5% spawning as babies. They move very quickly, so having a low simulation distance can mean that your foxes don't wander as much while you're trying to find them.
They breed with Sweet Berries and Glow Berries. Usually you will be able to get Sweet Berries in the same biome as the foxes, but if you were in a grove, having glowberries can actually matter. Keeping some glowberries earlier in the run from a mineshaft, lush cave or trial chamber can be helpful if you are planning on breeding foxes later on.
Goats, like Cows and Sheep above, breed with Wheat only.
They spawn in Groups of 2-3 in Jagged Peaks, Frozen Peaks and Snowy Slopes biomes, and are quite common in all of these. 5% of them will spawn as a baby, as with most of the other mobs here, and the same as the others, using the same amount of wheat will reduce a baby's growth time by the same amount. If you also have X Advancements, it can be very easy to just get in a boat with one for an extra advancement (it also might be useful to boat one down to another one).
Armadillos breed with Spider Eyes.
They spawn in groups of 2-3 in Savannas and groups of 1-2 in Badlands. Spider Eyes can be obtained a few different ways.
Chance that 1 Witch drops 2 spider eyes is 9.51%. The chance she drops 1 is 17.87%.
Spiders and Cave Spiders drop 1 spider eye 33.3% of the time. On average, you should get 2 spider eyes per 6 spiders killed.
DT spider eye to do
Armadillos cannot breed if they roll up. Being in a boat or water will prevent them being able to roll up. They roll up if:
The player sprints near them
An undead mob is near them
Frogs breed with Slimeballs.
They can be found only in Swamp and Mangrove Swamp biomes. They spawn in groups of 2-5 and are always adults (this is because their baby variant is the tadpole), which means you should always have enough to breed with. The goal will otherwise likely come down to getting the biome and the Slimeballs. Their breeding is similar to Turtles in that one mob becomes "pregnant" and goes to lay offspring. Check your board to make sure the Frogs counted and move on, since we do not need the frogspawn for anything.
Small slimes drop 0-2 Slimeballs each, meaning you are nearly guaranteed enough from a Big Slime. If you don't want to risk it, or you only have small slimes, you can lure the small slimes to your frog and have the frog kill them. This guarantees 1 slimeball per small slime.
Slimes can spawn in swamps, slime chunks and in Trial Chambers. In Swamps and Mangrove swamps, Slimes spawn more where there is (1) more moonlight, (2) lots of spawning space, (3) lower light levels. Minecraft worlds start with a full moon, which means your first night will be best for Slimes. Slime chunks are pretty unpredictable since you don't know the world seed, but if you are in a cave you could keep an eye out.
Trial Chambers have a 25% chance to select Slimes as the "small melee" spawner, over Baby Zombie, Silverfish and Cave Spider. If you see any of those trial spawners instead of the moss from the slime spawner, your Trial Chamber cannot spawn slimes this way. However, you could still force a potion of oozing from the Trial Spawners in an Ominous Trial. Each spawner chooses a lingering potion and a projectile, and this is location based, meaning that two spawners close together may pick the same lingering potion.
Spawn in Beach Biomes in groups of 2-5 with a 5% chance of spawning as a baby. They breed with Seagrass, which you can obtain either by breaking seagrass with shears, or from killing other turtles, which each drop 0-2 seagrass (so on average killing 2 turtles for 2 seagrass).
Turtles move slowly on land and much quicker in water. You can put one in a boat and knock it into the other two to make sure they are close together to breed, and that will be enough for Breed X Mobs, you don't have to wait for the whole turtle egg situation.
