Eberle studied Physics at Stuttgart University and received his PhD for a thesis conducted at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. In 2003 he joined the Global Alternative Propulsion Center of GM and Opel in Mainz-Kastel. His work at the time focused on technology strategy development on alternative powertrains, energy storage systems, and infrastructure. He was involved in strategic activities of the German National Innovation Program on hydrogen storage, and was a member of the founding team of ‘New Energy World’ (also known as FCH JU), an European Union Joint Technology Initiative. Eberle served on the "Task Force Elektromobilität" of the German automotive industry association VDA and the working group "Future Fuel Strategy" of the German research organization FVV. Eberle was a member of the European branch of the teams that brought Project Driveway and the Opel HydroGen4 on the road, as well as the Opel Ampera to the market. His current assignment at Opel and Stellantis centers around novel advanced simulation-based and hybrid-reality methodologies to develop, test and validate conventional and AI-based Automated Driving functions. As Workstream Lead & Manager Innovation at Opel and Stellantis, Eberle is a co-founder of PEGASUS, a globally leading activity comprising industry, academia and government institutions which addresses key gaps for the introduction of Automated Driving systems.
Eberle holds numerous patents in the fields of Energy Storage, Smart Mobility and Automated Driving. Covering these fields, he is also author of numerous scientific publications, inter alia of the most highly cited paper in Opel history acc. to Scopus, Web of Science & The Lens citation databases. Based on AD Scientific Index 2023 and Google Scholar data, Eberle is the most highly cited Stellantis researcher.
