Welcome to the Sustainable Materials & Environmental Technologies (SMET) Lab
The Sustainable Materials & Environmental Technologies (SMET) Lab, led by Dr. Sk Safikul Islam, is located in the Department of Chemistry at Presidency University, Bengaluru, and is affiliated with the Innovation and Translational Research Hub (iTRH). Our research focuses on the development and application of advanced engineering materials for sustainable solutions. At SMET Lab, an interdisciplinary team of students and researchers from diverse academic backgrounds collaborates to tackle real-world environmental and technological challenges using innovative material science approaches.
We aim to bridge fundamental research with practical applications in areas such as water treatment, CO₂ capture, plastic recycling, biocomposites, and clean technologies, contributing to a more sustainable and circular economy.

I am Dr. Sk. Safikul Islam, currently serving as an Assistant Professor (Research) in the Department of Chemistry at Presidency University, Bengaluru. Previously, I worked as a Senior Research Associate and National Postdoctoral Fellow (NPDF) in the Department of Materials Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.I obtained my Ph.D. jointly from Kalyani University and Aliah University, and completed my Master’s degree from Belur Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira, affiliated with the University of Calcutta. My research focuses on the development of advanced sustainable materials such as porous organic polymers (POP), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and 2D materials, and their application in high-performance water filtration membranes for emerging pollutant removal, desalination, and water/wastewater treatment. In addition, my areas of expertise include lyotropic liquid crystals, interpenetrating polymeric networks (IPNs), heterogeneous catalysis, plastic recycling, EMI shielding, and biomaterials. I am also keen on fostering industry-academia collaborations in the field of water research and sustainable materials.
