Objective:  To determine the effect of mobile phone ringtones on visual recognition during driving, laboratory and real-scene eye movement experiments were conducted with simulated and real driving tasks, respectively. Competition for visual attention during driving increases with the integration of sounds, which is related to driving safety.

Method:  We manipulated the physical (long exposure duration vs. short exposure duration) and psychological (self-related vs. non-self-related) properties of mobile phone ringtones presented to drivers. Estimates were based on linear mixed models (LMMs) and generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs).

Results:  Self-related ringtones had a greater influence on driving attention than non-self-related ones, and the interaction between exposure duration and self-relatedness was significant. Furthermore, the impact of the mobile phone ringtone occurred in real time after the ringtone stopped.

Conclusion:  These results highlight the importance of considering the impact of ringtones on driving performance and demonstrate that ringtone properties (exposure duration and self-relatedness) can affect cognitive processes.

Here's the deal... My Mother and I both have iPhone 6 and 6S phones. For the past three months her phone will play, at random intervals, the BY THE SEASIDE ringtone for NO REASON AT ALL. I have been through ALL her phones settings: Alarms, notifications, third party apps, reminders, alarm clocks, and calendars and cannot locate the source of this annoyance!

But usually when that happens there is a message that comes up on the screen that shows the phone number and where they are calling from (Bogus or Not.) But that is not happening at all. The phone just plays that stupid song at random intervals for no reason at all. I also check, and found that it isn't selected as one of her ringtones for any incoming calls or text messages. So if anyone has any ideas

I have the same issue on all 3 of my Ring chimes. I just wasted hours of my life in a chat only to be told there is nothing they can do right now and that someone would contact me. I just found this thread and found that mulitple people are having the same issue so it definitely appears there is something wrong in the firmware or your system for everbody. Please fix this issue as soon as possible. The default tone is now driving my dog crazy which is why I was trying to change it in the first place. I guess I will have to leave all my Ring chimes unplugged until you fix this so my dog does not lose his mind. HELP!!

If this does not resolve the issue, follow the steps below to change the Ringtone from 2 (the cellular phone ringtone) to 1 (the car stereo ringtone).

NOTE: The procedure may differ depending on the model. For details, refer to the manual supplied with the product.

The researchers' findings are significant because many public information campaigns intended to deter problematic cell phone use -- while driving, for example -- often emphasize waiting to respond to messages and calls. However, even waiting may take a toll on attention, according to the researchers. Simply remembering to perform some action in the future is sufficient to disrupt performance on an unrelated concurrent task.

"Even a slight distraction can have severe, potentially life-threatening effects if that distraction occurs at the wrong time," Stothart said. "When driving, it's impossible to know when 'the wrong time' will occur. Our results suggest that it is safest for people to mute or turn off their phones and put them out of sight while driving."

The driver was not satisfied with our discomfort. He decided to make the journey even more challenging by giving us a demonstration of his driving skills. He seemed to have only recently passed (or bribed his way through) his driving test, for he looked extremely nervous. Sweat poured down his long hooked nose from under his white Muslim cap. He gripped the wheel tightly, and hunched over it to be closer to the road surface. Then, every time he reached down to change gear, he lost control and the car veered into the middle of the road. This behaviour provoked some complaints from the passengers; we were lucky the road was virtually deserted, so that when he regained control of the wheel we were still intact. ff782bc1db
