Thousands of magazine titles are available through the Digital Library of Illinois. Magazines do not count against the check-out limits for ebooks and eaudio and are always available. Read magazines in your browser or download the Libby app for offline reading. In addition to magazines in English, many are available in Spanish, Chinese, French, German, Italian and Russian.

If I select 10 days for an eBook download, does it become unavailable to other users?

Availability depends on the access model(s) you own. If a user downloads a full e-book that has limited user access (vs unlimited user access), that "copy" or "user" will be unavailable to other users at your library for the duration of the download period.

How do these settings (like full-book downloads) compare with the publisher download limitations?

Publisher download limitations are the first "gate" for being able to set your own download settings. If a publisher doesn't allow downloading its titles, those titles will remain unable to be downloaded, no matter what download settings you apply to it.

What is the formula for download-days using up concurrent uses?

One concurrent use is a 24-hour period, so if a user downloads an eBook for seven days, it consumes seven uses from a Concurrent Access Model (CAM) eBook.

I'm putting this together because I posted a while ago about using IRC to acquire ebooks on Reddit, and there was a metric shit ton of interest from others in learning how to do it. Much of this info is available on the net, but it can be difficult to track down if you don't know exactly what to look for.

Disclaimer: I am in no way responsible for how you choose to use this knowledge. This method can and should only be used to download legally available ebooks, as an alternative source in case other services go down for whatever reason. You use this guide at your own discretion.

Answer: IRC is the best method to find ebooks. The quality is almost always high, the selection is extensive, and finding and downloading the books is quick and easy. Put simply, unless you happen to have access to a private site exclusively made for ebooks, you probably won't find a better source.

Once that's done, you want to navigate down to "Ignore" section in the DCC options, and turn the box option to "disabled". This is to ensure that incoming files are not ignored, which is important if you actually want to receive your ebooks. Example

Next thing you want to do is scroll back up to the "Servers" tab and pick out a server. For ebooks, I know of two servers that host channels dedicated to ebook downloads. One is "Undernet", the other is "IRChighway". While both have their uses, IRChighway is the one you want to use 90% of the time. The selection is generally more robust, the channels are more stable, and the downloads are faster. You generally only want to use Undernet if you can't find the ebook you're looking for on IRChighway. Sometimes you can get lucky and one will have a book if the other does not. In any case, select you server by finding it in the drop down menu and double clicking it. Example

6. Once you've done that, it'll take you back to the menu that I originally showed you. This time, click the connect button, and it'll connect you to the server and open a window offering you a chance to join a channel. Now, there are several channels you can join depending the server you're on. On Undernet, you can either go with "Bookz" or "ebooks", while on IRChighway, you can join "ebooks". Type in your channel and hit join. Example

This will have the channel bot automatically search through it's index and return you a listing of the books available from the download bots in the channel. It will look like this. As you can see, I searched for Romeo & Juliet, and the bot went through its index and returned a list of potential downloads. Click the accept button to have it download.

10. This will open up your mIRC downloads folder, which should contain a .zip file of the list of download options that the bot sent you. Extract it and open it up in notepad. There will be a variety of download links available in many different formats. Find whichever book you're looking for, in whichever format you prefer (I like HTML because they're generally the best formatted and the format is universal for mobile devices) and copy the text string up til the the end of the file. Any eReader that supports Adobe Digital Editions, reads PDF format, and can connect with a computer via USB, should be able to access Fuller Library eBooks. This should include all major Nook, Kobo, and SONY eReader devices. Kindle eReader devices (with the exception of Kindle Fire/ Fire Tablets) are not compatible with complete eBook downloads from ProQuest or EBSCO, our two largest eBook providers. If you are considering purchasing an eReader for the purpose of reading library eBooks, we do not recommend purchasing a Kindle. Please read below for details and a (limited) work around for those who choose to use Kindles.

eBooks that are only available as direct chapter by chapter downloads to PDF (e.g. eBooks in JSTOR, Cambridge Companions, or Credo Reference) are not a problem for Kindles or any other eReader compatible with standard PDFs. You should be able to use your device's normal method for adding content to move individual PDF chapters to your device. For Kindles this is done through the "Send to Kindle" feature.

The same file transfer method can be used for chapters or passages downloaded as standard PDFs from ProQuest or EBSCO eBooks. The availability of PDF downloads from these vendors is limited and may not always be offered. See our eBook vendor restrictions FAQ for more information.

The process becomes more complicated when downloading entire eBooks from vendors whose eBooks are protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM) licensing software. In Fuller's case this includes any full downloads from EBSCO or ProQuest, our two largest eBook suppliers.

Campus-affiliated users and members of the public on library public-access computers can often download some version or portion of library-licensed eBooks, but access varies by platform*. Those users can almost always read the entire book online, and can often download single chapters or a limited number of pages. Sometimes users can download an entire book without restrictions, and other times you can "check out" the eBook for a limited period of time (though the latter may be limited to campus-affiliated users). Many eBook platforms offer PDF downloads, and others require the use of free eBook viewing/reading software.

If you would rather buy Haymarket ebooks for your device directly from Amazon, Apple, B&N, Google, or Sony, then they'll be delivered to by these providers with Digital Rights Management (DRM) applied. Ebooks purchased from other vendors will not be available on your Haymarket downloads page.

If you are using an Android phone or tablet you can open epub files in the Google Play Books app. In the app settings, tap to enable PDF uploading. Download the epub file from our website, or email it to yourself and save it to your downloads or files folder on your device. Find the file and Tap MoreOpen WithPlay Books or Upload to Play Books.

To read ebooks on a Windows desktop, you will first need to download an ebook-reading program, such as Adobe Digital Editions or Sumatra Reader.
