For the past few years, my friends and I have utilized the year-summarizing exercises collected by the wonderful team at Year Compass. Their workbook is available for free, downloadable in multiple different formats, in several different languages. The impact of this workbook on my life has always been a net positive, but I can particularly see ways in which the Year Compass clarified my priorities in 2018 and 2019. I began to track international political events in my calendar, and decided to become more politically active. This resulted in my taking classes from the Anti-Racism Collaborative in Boston and BARCC. Ultimately, this also resulted in my decision to co-edit the anthology Resist Fascism in 2018, and Recognize Fascism (updated in 2020 to add link to the book! now on sale!) after that.

The Year Compass has helped me figure out, from year to year, what I wanted to make more space for in my life. In 2019, I referred back to it a few times in the middle of the year when I was casting about for direction. It was a good reminder of things I intended to do, places I intended to go, people I intended to see, things I cared about and wanted to make progress on.

Even if you have a pretty clear idea in your mind of what you want to achieve in the new year, take the time to write it down. Experts say that seeing your goals in writing can motivate you to taking the actions needed to achieve them. In addition, your goals document or notebook can become your compass for the coming year, to keep you on track and help you evaluate your progress.

I love reflecting back and future thinking, especially this time of the year. Recently, I reread many of my old journals going back to age 12. It was quite the experience. At a point, I had to stop. I like to look back, as a way of understanding. Rereading made me appreciate the present and recognize how the seed ideas and choices made led me to this time.

End of Freshman Year

By the end of your first year, you should feel equipped to make a confident decision about your major. If you are still undecided after completing your first year, you can continue to receive individualized support from a Mount Mary career counselor.

First the notebook takes you through a series of questions to take stock of 2022. Then you write down all of the biggest events and trips you took and identify the best moments of your year. (This is my favorite part because it's so uplifting to see on paper just how many places I went and how many people I spent time with.) You write about things you'd like to forgive and let go of from 2022. Then you say goodbye to all that. (Yes, all of this can bring up a lot of feelings.)

The final part of the workbook focuses on 2023. You write down three things that you will love about yourself, or let go of, or accomplish, plus what you will draw the most energy from and who you will lean on. Then you write down a page full of big, huge, GRAND dreams for the year.

Keep track of the best thing that happened each week for a year. Write it down on Sunday, throw the scrap of paper in a jar, and read them all on January 1, 2024. Could be a great family activity too! (15:28)

On this ep I also talk about how six months of sobriety was one of the best parts of my year (4:48). (I wrote more about that very positive experience in a past post). The book Sober Curious by Ruby Warrington as well as her workbook, The Sober Curious Reset: Change the Way You Drink in 100 Days or Less, meant so much to me this year. I feel a lot better about my relationship with alcohol than I did at this time in 2022.

If you found value in the Cruel Summer Book Club podcast this year, please pretty please take a few moments to leave me a five-star review on Apple Podcasts. This really helps new listeners find the podcast, and it would mean the world to me!

I always get so excited for January. I call it the Quiet Month, and I take my annual hibernation seriously. But before I go into my cave, I thought I’d share with you some of the ways I intentionally welcome the new year, and close the door on the last 365 days.

You can hear all about the different methods I use to align my goals for a new year on today’s podcast episode — the final episode of season two. (It’s only 18 minutes long!)

My favorite way to reminisce on the good and the bad of the past year and get my mental sh*t together for the year ahead is Year Compass (5:47). This is a free booklet that I’ve been filling out for the last few years. If you have ~4 hours to set aside to do some journaling, I highly recommend giving it a try.

What’s crazy about this part is that when I look back on my dreams for years past, SO MANY of them came true. (7:58) For example, at the beginning of 2021, I was unemployed and living with my parents in Las Vegas. I did not yet know which city I would move to or when. Here’s a bit of what I wrote about my dreams for the year ahead on January 2, 2021:

Doing these annual check-ins shows me just how many of my long-term goals I have accomplished, and that’s amazing! But it also holds a mirror to the things I return to year after year, yet never change. It’s an excellent tool for self-awareness, and a reminder of how you are (and are not) spending your one sweet life on this earth.

Youth/Children: If you have youth or children on your team, they will need to have their parent or guardian sign a printed paper waiver. Someone on your team (like you!) must take a photo of all child/youth waivers and send them to waivers@cnoy.com. Waivers will be available at check-in on Event Day.

I have many fond memories of our in-person staff retreats. My first retreat in Palm Springs will always be my favorite because I met everyone in person for the first time. It was also a mid-year retreat, and patio dining in February in Palm Springs is magical, especially with mariachis.

I became a teacher and am still teaching 20 years later because it has always been a passion. At Compass, it is a unique opportunity to work with learning coaches and scholars, and I love supporting each of them on their personalized learning journey. It is a gift to watch the growth and learning that happens over a school year, and I am so thankful for the relationships built along the way.

When you become a Mom, keeping your kids safe becomes a priority. With three little ones, I am constantly having to child-proof cabinets and drawers, move things out of their reach, and buy the latest safety products. When it comes to car safety, we have been on the hunt for a new booster seat for our three year old. He is outgrowing his convertible car seat and we wanted a booster seat that would last for long time. After weeks of searching with no luck, I was introduced to the Compass B570 Booster Car Seat by The First Years. ff782bc1db
