Gadgets aren't available anymore. Instead, Windows 10 now comes with lots of apps that do many of the same things and much more. You can get more apps for everything from games to calendars. Some apps are better versions of the gadgets you love, and many of them are free.

Here you can, for example, click on the first checkbox to make the sidebar always visible. This way you have your gadgets always in sight. A disadvantage is though, that the close button of maximized windows isn't on the top-right corner anymore. To fix this you can put the sidebar on the left side.

Windows Desktop Gadgets is a feature of Windows Vista and Windows 7 (excluding the Windows Server family of the operating system). It hosts mini-applications or "gadgets" which are a combination of scripts and HTML code. Their use cases include displaying system time, downloading and displaying RSS feeds, or controlling other software such as Windows Media Player. In Windows Vista, gadgets can run "docked" in the sidebar. In Windows 7, they can "float" anywhere on the desktop. It is also possible to run multiple instances of a gadget simultaneously. Windows Vista and 7 sidebar also works on Windows XP.[4]

Windows Vista ships with eleven gadgets: Calendar, Clock, Contacts, CPU Meter, Currency Conversion, Feed Headlines, Notes, Picture Puzzle, Slide Show, Stocks, and Weather. Several other gadgets available during the Vista beta such as App Launcher, Feed Viewer, Number Puzzle, Recycle Bin and Egg Timer never made it to the final release of Windows Vista. Windows 7 adds a Media Center gadget and removes the Contacts, Notes and Stocks gadgets.

Originally, Microsoft provided a link to a web site called Windows Live Gallery where additional Sidebar gadgets that have been created by third-party developers could be downloaded. The site was officially retired on October 1, 2011.[5][6]

Cairo-Dock is an attractive, Lightweight eye-candy dock to launch your applications. I'm mentioning it hare because of it's ability to add add-ons. It comes bundled withmany applets including this weather applet. You can use applets inside dock or detach and use them as gadgets.

If security WAS an issue, wouldn't they have removed the gadgets from Windows 7 and Vista (Windows 8 came out in 2012, so Windows 7 hadn't even lost mainstream support yet, so wouldn't they have made changes to it already?)

If the gadgets WERE a security issue, are they still now in Windows 10 and newer, since Microsloths never bothered to fix them? I revived them in Windows 10 and don't remember getting a severe security warning, so are they okay?

I have a bunch of Gadgets ruing on my Windows 7 64-bit desktop. Most of them are from addgadgets.com and have not received updates for a while. But from what I understand, this is issue not related to the gadget creators, but Windows 7 itself. Anyway reloading the "sidebar.exe" processes does resolve/fix/repair the frozen/broken Windows 7 gadget issue.

They are buggy and freeze-up every now and then (Or get all weird pink/purple). In the reference image below "Drive Meter" and "Digital Clock" gadgets have crashed, got broken, got frozen and mangled with PINK...

The concept of desktop gadgets has been around for quite some time, and Microsoft officially introduced them in Windows Vista to much fanfare. Desktop gadgets offered the ability to view various information at a glance, play mini-games, and more. Unfortunately, Microsoft decided to kill this beloved feature after Windows 7, citing security reasons.

So what are users of Windows 10 supposed to do if they still want to use desktop gadgets? Well, some clever developers had the same questions and came up with some nice solutions. In this guide, we will cover the top two free solutions to bring desktop gadgets back to Windows 10.

Once installed, simply right click on the desktop to access the gadgets from the context menu. Or you can access them from the control panel, under the Appearance and Personalization section.

8GadgetPack will also allow you to add custom gadgets using .gadget files. But be careful in adding these custom gadgets by verifying that they are from a trusted source and are clean of malware, which was the reason Microsoft removed them in the first place.

edit: ah, yeah, reinstalling sidebar fixed it. Now I just need to track down all my gadgets again, sigh. Thanks MS. Eh, nevermind, the 8gadget pack is the easiest way to go, it has all the gadgets I wanted anyway. I'm finding some weather apps still work, I had to fight with the MSN one, but it's showing me my weather now. I wish Weather Meter worked though.

Many people including myself still love the desktop gadgets that were introduced in Windows Vista. They were removed completely in Windows 8 which made many people unhappy. Microsoft wants to push live tiles as their replacement and therefore they claim Gadgets as insecure, just like they push Store apps over Desktop apps. If you cannot imagine the Desktop without your favorite gadgets, here is how to get them back again in Windows 10. Just follow this short tutorial.

Well, can the live tiles planned for the desktop have transparent areas? Can they have a pop-out window? Can they evaluate privileged javascript (at least being able to connect to sites to fetch and send data)? If so, why not just call them gadgets and call it a day? If not, stop pretending like they are any use at all.

Gadgetarian does not add any new abilities to the Windows system, it just enables the native gadget functions, now unfortunately hidden. This way you can keep using all of your old desktop gadgets or add new ones, without compromising the integrity of the OS.

Same here Chris, as soon as I had it working again it was shut down with the November update, gadgets in the context menu but simply does nothing, the gadgetarian 64bit version re-enabled it for me though as per Georges reply above. Now working fine again and my existing gadgets were still there to drop back on my other monitor. :D

I have installed the gadgets on Win 10 however in addition to my lovely timezone clocks (so glad to have them back) however I now have in the gadget bar an icon of background programs which is most annoying. How can I get rid of it.. Rhonda

Microsoft researchers are aiming to change that. They are working on a new set of tools that other researchers and developers can use to train and test robots, drones and other gadgets for operating autonomously and safely in the real world. A beta version is available on GitHub via an open source license.

Ashish Kapoor, a Microsoft researcher who is leading the project, said they hope the tools will spawn major progress in creating artificial intelligence gadgets we can trust to drive our cars, deliver our packages and maybe even do our laundry.

First, ConfigFS, has been a bit of a learning experience, but nothing to difficult for those who have plenty of linux knowledge.... That being said, no matter what I do, be it set os_descriptors, etc. I can not get RNDIS to work in a composite gadget with other gadgets. If I set it up with RNDIS alone, it works great. RNDIS/Serial, and RNDIS starts, but that isnt one of the combinations I am looking for. Now if I try RNDIS/Storage, or RNDIS/HID, or RNDIS/HID/Storage, the HID and Storage work fine, and the RNDIS, which is detected fails to start in Windows with code 10. This all works as expected on a linux host, but not on a Windows host running Windows 7(Using this as a testing platform)

That being said, C/C++ are not languages that I am overly familliar with, so I am not sure how to apply the fixes they are describing. Do I need to patch libcomposite to force RNDIS to be the first, and second IAD in the composite device? or is there a way to so this in configfs? If there is it has to do with deviceclass, and device subclass, but I have been unable to find much documentation on that, other than the kernel documentation, which could have been better written. Really, the whole configFS gadget framework is under documented, but that is another story. I am not above patching the kernel, if that is what it comes to, I am already running an Up board platform patched/Kali Wifi Patched/Storage gadget patched(Allow images more than 2.5gb) gentoo kernel on top of a base gentoo system. So patching isnt the problem, what to patch is. If anyone else has run into similar issues, and can help spoonfeed me through the process of making composite gadgets with RNDIS work in Windows properly, I would appreciate it.

Hi, you can get the windows 10 gadgets but from the third party. Microsoft has discontinued the Windows Gadgets and I would advice you to be very careful while downloading the gadgets from the third party. I wish you all the best. May its helpful -gadgets-and-widgets-to-windows-10/

Here I found different sources of Windows 10 Desktop Gadgets and most of the source are actually related to Guide to add Gadgets on Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10. Now windows 10 desktop gadgets list like to share with all of us. That list contained most famous Windows 10 Desktop Gadgets.

Microsoft's official security advisory on the subject explains two big problems. First, Microsoft says it's aware of legitimate desktop gadgets that contain security vulnerabilities that could be exploited by attackers. Attackers could exploit a vulnerability in a gadget to gain control over your entire computer, if you're signed on as a user account with administrator privileges.

In other words, the desktop gadgets aren't just a lightweight gadget platform. Gadgets are full Windows programs with full access to your system, and there are third-party gadgets with known security vulnerabilities that will never be fixed. But many Windows users may not realize installing a gadget is just as dangerous as installing a program.

That's why Windows 8 and 10 don't include desktop gadgets. Even if you're using Windows 7, which includes desktop gadgets and the Windows Sidebar functionality, Microsoft recommends disabling it with their downloadable "Fix It" tool. e24fc04721
