For the life of me, I can no longer get my 4k ATV to control the volume of my vizio 50". The TV is maybe 10 years old and has worked fine with the ATV in the past, but recently, volume control just stopped working. I've tried the following:

-unplugged the ATV, let it sit, and then re-plug

-updated to latest iOS version

-remove the remote/tv from settings and re-learn tv (which works fine during the learning process, but once that's done, the power will work, but no TV volume or mute controls)

After the latest tvOS update my Vizio TV remote no longer controls my Apple TV. I was actually surprised when I noticed that it was able to do that when I got my new TV, but then after a couple of weeks and an update it no longer works. I tried learning the remote but the Apple TV couldn't see it at all.

Actually, it was all my fault! I recently got a new Bluray player and I noticed that when I turned it off the TV turned off as well. I went into the system settings on the TV and turned the CEC off. The TV then no longer turned off when the Bluray player was shut down. It was a couple of days afterward when I noticed the TV's remote no longer controlled the Apple TV, but then it dawned on me: Maybe it's that CEC setting. And, of course, it was! Duh!

Program or replace your remote control using the Interactive Media Guide (IMG)

Using your Fios remote, you can program, replace your remote, or fix Fios TV issues, following the steps below:

Menu > Customer Support > Top Support Tools > select your option and follow the on screen prompts

If so, that means it has been controlling via CEC. As an owner of multiple Vizio TVs, I consider their implementation of CEC to be problematic. Sometimes, it doesn't work right. And that's not with Roku devices. I have Roku, Apple TV, Fire TV, and Chromecast. Vizio CEC sometimes goes wonky with them all, and then suddenly works.

An option is to use the menu system to configure the remote to work with your TV. To my understanding, that will allow the remote to send IR signals rather than communicate via CEC for those functions. Perhaps @Tivoburkee, @atc98092, @makaiguy, or @renojim can correct me. But follow the suggestions of @Tivoburkee and see if that resolves it.

I have two Vizio TVs with Roku players attached, one an Ultra 4670 and one a Premiere 3920. The Premiere came with an IR remote, which has no TV controls. I added a WiFi Direct remote to that player, and for both it and the Ultra I never specifically programmed either remote to control the TV. But in both cases the remotes will control the TV power and volume. So I am assuming it is via CEC. They both worked "out of the box" with no need for me to check any settings in either the Roku or the TV.

I just got ours to work!

I just selected the "add new remote" function and went through the prompts. Then, when that was complete, I did the "program remote" for our ancient Vizio TV.

Worked like a charm on the first try! Give it a shot!

You might have noticed sometimes that when you turn on your Blu-Ray player, your TV automatically switches to the correct input. Or maybe your TV turns on when you hit a button on your Fire TV Stick remote. This is CEC at work, and you can use this feature to your advantage to streamline your remote situation or to replace a lost remote. In three simple steps, you can put CEC to work for you!

You found this page because your Vizio TV or soundbar has some cross talk issues with other remote controls, including the controller for the MediaLight bias lighting system.

In particular, the volume down and the 20% button for the MediaLight can interfere. Lowering the volume can dim your lights, or dimming your lights can adjust your volume. The lights may also flicker at times.

This has not posed problems for most customers because, unlike most TVs, Vizio has an option under the user settings called "Turn off USB with TV."

If you select this mode, the lights will turn on and off with the Vizio TV without needing to use the remote control for the lights.

1) Place the MediaLight receiver behind the TV so It is outside of the line of sight of the Vizio remote. You can still use the MediaLight remote buy moving closer to or behind the TV with the remote, however once the MediaLight is set to 10% of the maximum brightness of the display, you really should not ever need to set it again.

If your problem is due to a Vizio sound bar and not a Vizio TV (or if you do need to use the remote for reasons not contemplated above), we do offer a different dimmer that you can use with the MediaLight. It's bulkier than the standard remote.

Instead, we will focus our efforts on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi controller. We offer a Wi-Fi option now and with it, use your phone or Alexa/Google Home to control the lights. This option also supports Bluetooth in the absence of a Wi-Fi network.

Nevertheless, In the USA, you can obtain a free alternative infrared remote and dimmer with your MediaLight order. Just request one via the form below or enter a note during checkout. If you request one after you already receive your order, it's still free but you pay shipping (about $3.50 for first class mail).

For those outside of the USA, there is a shipping fee of $14 if you are just ordering a free remote. (This is our cost for first class international mail. However, Vizio doesn't sell many TVs outside of the USA, so we don't see this outside of the USA very often).

Don't throw away the normal remote just yet. If your Vizio Smart TV needs to be reset, one of the only ways to do this is with the physical remote through a series of key strokes. While there are ways to perform a hard reset using the buttons on the back of the television, it's less than ideal.

If your TV or receiver supports HDMI-CEC, Apple TV uses the HDMI connection to allow it to be controlled by your TV or receiver remote. For more information, see the Apple Support article Control your TV or receiver with your Siri Remote or Apple TV Remote.

Before you can use a network-based remote for home-control systems with Apple TV, you first need to add the remote to the Home app on an iOS or iPadOS device. Make sure the remote is turned on and connected to your network.

Turn on the camera and the point the remote control at the camera. Looking at the remote through the camera's/phone's LCD screen, when you press the volume button(s) you should see a light flashing at the front end of the remote. Try other known working buttons on the remote to prove that you are doing it correctly. If the volume button 'light' appears intermittent (it will seem to flash as it is sending codes) in comparison to other buttons most probably either the button contact is dirty or wearing out. This is not uncommon as the Power button and the volume buttons are the two most 'popular' buttons on a remote control unit.

Here is a link to a video which shows how to open a remote control and to clean the button contacts. How to open your remote may vary as to what is shown in the video. The cleaning principles will be the same.

I have the same thing. Worked well first 2 months I had the TV. Neither remote works well now for the volume, The Vizio or the spectrum remote, so it isn't the batteries or the remotes. I also stream from my phone and the volume won't work well with my phone either.

Can you explain how you fixed it? What app? The same thing happened to me after I cast a show from my phone to the tv and now there is a 10 second lag between the time I push volume button on remote and when it adjusts on the tv

Does your Vizio remote no longer control your TV? In some cases, simply troubleshooting your remote's performance will solve your problems and negate the need for a reset. This wikiHow article teaches you how to reset a Vizio remote's connection by power cycling the remote or resetting its memory.

You can set up your Chromecast Voice Remote to control the volume on your Chromecast instead of your TV, receiver, or soundbar. If you choose this option, you can control the volume in the following ways:

Important: You might experience unexpected results because of a disparity between the Chromecast volume settings and the volume settings on your TV, receiver or soundbar. For example, if you mute your TV with the remote that came with it and then try to change the volume with your voice, your TV will stay muted. 2351a5e196
