Hello everyone, wondered if people had any good suggestions for viking/viking themed music? I quite like classic, folksongs, rock n roll, metal, all sorts. Just looking for some interesting stuff to listen too. I also heavily enjoy Icelandic culture if there's any suggestions there as well (I know it's not entirely norse but this is one of the best subs I know) Thank you in advance beserkers!

Both bands take on Viking music in the literal sense - using instruments from the times, and are usually pretty amazing bands both in terms of musical constructions (hehe) and in their visual style. It's also a great backdrop to get the nordic spirits flowing while playing (I love the game's music, but am always happy to change things up a bit).

Is there some ancient musical notes or lyrics carved into a rock somewhere? Have there been instruments found in burial sites? Even if we have found instruments, what makes those bands think they were played that way and made that style of music?

I came into a discussion with a friend about Viking metal and we talked about what actually gives us a feeling about Vikings when we listen to it because many of the instruments and sounds used in this genre are very modern. In my brief research in original Viking music, I stumbled upon "Drmde mig en drm i nat" and "Nobilis humilis" which of course are nothing alike Viking metal, but I am curious to know more about this topic.

The many regions of the Nordic countries share certain traditions, many of which have diverged significantly. It is possible to group together Finland, Estonia, Latvia and northwest Russia as sharing cultural similarities, contrasted with Norway, Sweden, Denmark and the Atlantic islands of Iceland and the Faroe Islands. Greenland's Inuit culture has its own musical traditions, influenced by Scandinavian culture. Finland shares many cultural similarities with both Baltics and the Scandinavian nations. The Saami of Sweden, Norway, Finland and Russia have their own unique culture, with ties to the neighboring cultures.

Circle dancing while singing ballads is a historic part of the folk traditions of all of northern Europe. Only the Faroe Islands have maintained this tradition to the present day, though it has been revived in some other areas. Iceland is home to many ancient musical practices no longer found elsewhere in the Nordic area, such as the use of parallel fifths and organum.

Finland was long ruled by Sweden, so much of Finnish culture is influenced by Swedish. There are a number of Swedes living in Finland, and vice versa. These communities have produced traditional and neo-folk musicians like the Swedish-Finn Scea Jansson and Gjallarhorn, and the Finnish-Swedish Norrltar and JP Nystrms.

Finland's musical ties are primarily to the Balto-Finnic peoples of Russia and Estonia (Cronshaw, 91). Runolaulu (runo-song) is a kind of song found throughout this area. Estonia and Finland both have national epics based on interconnected forms of runo-song, Kalevipoeg and Kalevala, respectively. "Estonian runo-song has the same basic form as the Finnish variety to which it is related: the line has eight beats, the melody rarely spans more than the first five notes of a diatonic scale and its short phrases tend to use descending patterns" (Cronshaw, 16).

In recent times Nordic folk music is used in developing the background score for movies, TV shows and games. Popular TV shows like Game of Thrones and games like God of War have used Nordic folk music to give a mythic experience.[1]

Archaeological excavations have unearthed numerous musical instruments from the Viking Age, which can be categorized as woodwind, brass, string, and percussion instruments. Examples of these instruments include long, tubular lur horns; bone flutes found in Birka, Sweden; panpipes from the Coppergate excavation; a cow horn found in Vsterby, Sweden; rattles in the Oseberg ship in Norway; and lyres such as the Anglo-Saxon Sutton Hoo lyre found in the UK.

From the various locations where these instruments were buried, it can be gathered that music and musical instruments were likely played on a variety of occasions and served multiple functions, such as for religious, entertainment, and perhaps trading purposes.

Finally, there is a multitude of Latin sources, from pre-Christian Roman writers to Christian monks that detail what kind of subjects that the Germanic tribes sang, and what types of instruments they played. From all of these foreign sources, we know that at least one type of Norse vocal music sounded legato with different pitches, Scandinavian music tended to be conservative, and Germanic tribes sang about their own history and chanted before the battle.

Although Old Norse literature that mentions music were written by the Scandinavians themselves, as these were all recorded decades and usually centuries after the Viking Age, accuracy is a problem. Such sources include runes, the Poetic and Prose Eddas, sagas, and others, and these typically describe when, where, and about what Viking Age music consisted of. Old Norse literature indicates that there were many different genres of music, including military songs, domestic songs, and those for entertainment. Like archaeology, it supports the hypothesis that music was performed for different contexts, with different instruments.

By studying archaeological records, literary accounts, and medieval music theories, it is possible to sketch the outline of Viking Age Scandinavian music. Archaeology demonstrates the diversity of instruments, while later Old Norse literary accounts describe the circumstances wherein music was performed.

However, to have a better understanding of what Viking music actually sounded like, it is necessary to turn towards music theories and reconstruct melodies. To do this, we can look at early melodies and continuing Scandinavian artistic traditions that may have traces of earlier music, and compare and contrast these melodies. Furthermore, unlike the Vikings, Arab, Byzantine, and Latin writers did describe and record their own music, and we also know from their startling accounts that Scandinavian music did not resemble theirs. Thus, by eliminating what it did not resemble, we can guess what Viking music did not sound like, and delete this from the hypothesis. While it may be impossible to reconstruct the music of the Vikings with 100% accuracy, it is possible to come up with a close approximation.

Of course, all of this must be taken with a grain of salt. No matter what methods are used to reconstruct the music of the Vikings, unless one had a time machine, it is impossible to say for certain how it sounded. However, by combining archaeological, literary, and musical evidence, it is possible to propose a highly educated hypothesis.

What is possible to say, is that the Vikings had plenty of music.

Singing and playing music were important to the Vikings, bothin everyday life and for festive occasions. They sang songs when theywere happy and when they were sad. They danced, sang songs and played theirinstruments when they had celebrations of some kind. They had songs to accompanythem when working, making the work easier. They sang love songs, and lullabiesfor their children. We can be fairly certain of this as we know of no cultureswhere music has not been important. But... What kind of songs did they sing? That we don't know. What kind of tunes did they play? That we don't know. What kind of instruments did they use? Well, this we know a thing or two about. Why do we know so little?Because when the last note of a song is sung it is gone forever, unlesssomeone remembers it or writes it down in some way, to be performed again later. The Vikings, like the rest of the people in Europe at the time, didn't knowanything about musical notation, and their culture gradually became a part ofthe Christian European culture. The oldest songs we know from Scandinavia todayare all part of the common European heritage. The voices of the Vikings are goneforever.

Sigurardttir herself had her first child while working on the album. "I actually think you can hear it in the music. You can sort of hear her new motherly qualities in her playing. And I think it's absolutely beautiful," lafs says.

"I always tell people that because we've been playing for so many years together, that we have sort of an unspoken emotional connection through music. And I wanted to test that out," lafs says, recognizing it was a "challenge" playing that way. "I also just thought it was a beautiful look, sort of almost like us becoming one person for this performance where we sort of sit back to back."

As a blog, we have focused on profiling some smaller and emerging neofolk bands in an effort to draw out the DIY elements of a grassroots scene. The perception that many have of neofolk is that all the major bands are held tightly by the far-right, examples being Blood + Sun or Death in June, but there is a whole universe of major neofolk bands who have taken a public stand against white nationalism. This is particularly true outside of the narrow English language post-punk bands that dominate much of the music press coverage. Many of the bands who drive their inspiration directly from the folk music run against this fascist interpretation, including the heathen bands of the Northern Tradition. 17dc91bb1f
