Videocon Industries Limited is an Indian multinational conglomerate, headquartered in Mumbai.[3] The company was founded in 1979, by Venugopal Dhoot. The group had 17 manufacturing sites in India and plants in Mainland China, Poland, Italy and Mexico. It was the third largest picture tube manufacturer in the world[4] valued at US$5.5 billion.[5]

In 1985, Aurangabad based Nandlal Madhavlal Dhoot founded and incorporated Videocon International with a goal of manufacturing 1 lakh TV sets per year. "Videocon became the first company to bring colour TVs in India," claims Anirudh Dhoot, the founder's grandson (Venugopal Dhoot's son) and Videocon's current director.[7]

In India, the group sold consumer products like colour televisions, washing machines, air conditioners, refrigerators, microwave ovens and many other home appliances, through a multi-brand strategy with the largest sales and service network in India.

Since the entry of Korean Chaebols and their rising popularity in the Indian market, Videocon from a stand-point of market leader has seen a slow decline to become a no. 3 player in India. The company continued to do well in the washing machine and refrigerator segment.[8]

In November 2009, Videocon launched its new line of mobile phones.[9] Videocon has since launched a number of handsets ranging from basic colour FM phones to high-end Android devices. In February 2011, Videocon Mobile Phones launched the hitherto unknown concept of 'Zero' paise (1 paisa is the 100th unit of 1 Indian Rupee) per second with bundled SIM cards of Videocon mobile services for 7 of its handset models. In July 2015, Videocon Mobiles launched its own flagship smartphone Videocon Infinium Z51+ in India.[10] On 7 June 2016, Videocon Mobile launched its new smartphone 'Videocon Cube3 V50290'[11] in India.[12]

Videocon acquired the colour picture tube (CPT) businesses from Thomson S.A. of France having manufacturing facilities in Poland, Italy, Mexico and China along with support research and development facilities in the fiscal year 2005.[14][15]

On 4 October 2018, Chanda Kochhar, the ex MD and CEO of ICICI Bank had to step down from her position following allegations of corruption in sanctioning loans to Videocon.[17] Amidst investigations related to Videocon bad loans, she was forced by the board of ICICI Bank to take indefinite leave. The Central Bureau of Investigation named Chanda Kochhar and her husband Deepak Kochhar as beneficiaries in the financial fraud between June 2009 and October 2011. Venugopal Dhoot, the promoter of Videocon had fraudulently transferred part of the loan received from ICICI Bank to the Kochhars' business entreprise[18] after Chanda Kochhar, Sandeep Bakhshi became the full time Managing Director and CEO of ICICI Bank.[17][19]

The chargesheet alleged that Dhoot, the Kochhars, and others "engineered a plan and design in December 2008, after the announcement of the appointment of Chanda Kochhar as MD and CEO of ICICI Bank", to get sanctioned loans to the Videocon Group.

The financial state of Videocon Industries was much worse than most Indian business people could have anticipated in 2009 when the company unveiled its first line of mobile devices. The Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has approved Vedanta Group's Twin Star Technologies' resolution plan for beleaguered Videocon Industries Ltd. As per the resolution plan, Twin Star Technologies will pay Rs 2,962 crore against Videocon's total debt of Rs 31,000 crore. Twin Star will pay around Rs 500 crore within 90 days as upfront payment and the rest as non-convertible debentures over a period of time.

It also says that dissenting creditors will have to be paid upfront, reported BloombergQuint. The NCLT had allowed insolvency proceedings against Videocon group comprising 13 companies in 2019. Today's NCLT order was passed by a division bench comprising justice HP Chaturvedi and justice Ravikumar Duraisamy.

The state-owned lender SBI had filed an insolvency plea against Videocon Industries in December 2017. Subsequently, insolvency proceedings were also started against 15 other entities of the group, while keeping the two entities, KAIL Ltd and Trend Electronics Ltd, out of the consolidation plan.

Earlier, the Dhoot family had offered to pay Rs 30,000 crore to lenders to settle their outstanding loans and pull out 13 Videocon group companies from the insolvency proceedings. The consortium of lenders had also rejected Videocon promoter Venugopal Dhoot's settlement offer in December 2020.

This approval will also now consolidate Vedanta''s hold in Ravva oil field, PTI reported. Vedanta's interest in Videocon is principally driven by the latter's 25 per cent stake in the Ravva oil field. Vedanta, through Cairn, holds 22.5 per cent stake in Ravva and after this success, it will take its stake to 47.5 per cent, and will be the biggest stakeholder ahead of ONGC at 40 per cent.

The average output from the Ravva block in FY20 was 14,232 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd). It increased to 22,037 boepd in the first quarter of FY21. Earlier in December, Videocon''s lenders had approved the bid submitted by Twin Star Technologies.

According to the Whirlpool Of India Ltd, it has obtained two design registrations i.e. Nos. 223833 and 223835 .The said design registrations are valid, subsisting and in force for a period of ten years from 15th July, 2009, with a possibility of extension of 5 years after period of 10 years.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday arrested Videocon Group Chairman Venugopal Dhoot in connection with its probe into ICICI Bank loan irregularities, people familiar with the development said. This came three days after former ICICI Bank managing director Chanda Kochhar and her husband, Deepak Kochhar, were arrested in the case.

Dhoot, who was questioned multiple times over the last four years, was arrested on the basis of documentary evidence, which allegedly showed he bribed the Kochhars for availing loans from the private bank, an officer said.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED), which investigated the money laundering aspect of the case, filed a charge sheet in November 2020 alleging that the Kochhars and Dhoot used a web of companies to launder money received as bribe. e24fc04721
