I had thought of that as well, and so I tried several times just to be sure.

That said, and after triple checking everything, I've concluded that there is a bug with the latest Ubuntu image and vmware's easy setup feature.

OK, I just found the "vmware-config.pl" script, and am running that. It just said it couldn't find a suitable kernel module for my running kernel, so I've asked it to create one. Crossing my fingers! I'll report back when something happens.

After scraping through several other posts relating to the similar issues I am experience, I will keep this brief. I've implemented one of the solutions (powercfg /powerthrottling disable /path "C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\VMware Workstation\x64\vmware-vmx.exe") which has fixed half of the issues such as booting/shutting down and application start up. However I still have 2 noteworthy issues: severe latency/input delay with using something basic as a terminal or typing this post and trying to drag & drop files from my host machine onto/into my VMs desktop and desktop directory with no results other than an odd "shadow" of the file that can be visually seen on the desktop GUI but not seen in the file directory or terminal (yet it can be dragged and dropped into any other directory I've tried so far and it is successful). Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I installed VMware Workstation 17 Player on my PC running Windows 10 Professional 64-bit. Then, I created an Ubuntu virtual machine using ubuntu-23.04-desktop-amd64.iso downloaded from their website. During installation, VMware asked me to enter my full name, username and password. However, after installation, I could not login. I already made sure that I typed the password correctly. Thinking that I might have keyed in something wrong during the installation process, I deleted the entire virtual machine and reinstalled Ubuntu under VMware Workstation 17 Player. Again, got the same error during login. Please let me know how to resolve this issue. Thank you.

My 2TB My Book western digital external drive died after a tiny bump from my elbow. I bought a new one, 4 TB. I connected it to my computer (host Ubuntu 13.04 64 bit), and it seemed ok - until I tried to connect it to my virutal machines, where I mostly need it - and it simply doesnt work. I have an ubuntu 13.04 64 bit machine and the new 4tb is not recognized. In the ubuntu it simply doesnt show, no messages, anything. I'm starting to get desperate with all my WD drives giving these problems - I thought about trying to mount the drive manually on my ubuntu vm. The old 2TB drive that I had used to automount without any problems. And this one mounts ok in the host, so I dont understand why it is not showing in the vm. Someone suggested to me that maybe the problem is the 4TB size - is this an issue with vmware? If yes, what is the solution? It cant be a linux problem because on the host it works ok. Any other suggestions what could be the problem, what I could try to do?

I don't know if something similar exists for ubuntu, if it does, instead of booting from a usb (which could be tricky), I would add a cdrom in qemu with its path pointing to the live iso of ubuntu and boot from it.

I think that vmware is always able to start that vmdk because it emulates a specific machine: with that machine ubuntu booted from vmware generated the uuid for the disk inside the vmdk; that uuid is stored in the fstab file, and ubuntu booted from vmware will always be able to mount the disk since the uuid in the fstab reflects that of the disk in the vmdk file.

I never tried ubuntu, the following is only a research on google, based on what I would do to change the uuid on that vmdk file, commands may be different since I didn't test them in a live environment.

7. see if the uuid listed in fstab for sda1 (in this example) is different from that you took note; if it's different replace the uuid with the new one, save the fstab file and exit nano; note, I'm using "nano" here as a text editor, most probably the live ubuntu doesn't have it, search what is the command line editor in ubuntu and use it instead of nano.
