There are many scripture verses in the Bible that talk about trusting and obeying God. A few that tie in really well to this particular hymn are Proverbs 16:20, 1 John 5:2-3, Matthew 11:29-30. These would be great verses to memorize or use as copywork.

In addition to listening to a variety of versions of this song (make sure to check out some of our favorites below), I have created free printable copywork sheets with the hymn lyrics. In order to build upon the idea of trusting God, you can make a list of things you are thankful for and ways that God has already been faithful to your family. This hymn can also be a good starting point for discussions on times when we have to obey God even though it is hard.

Another fun way to help your children remember the hymn is to have your children learn to play the hymn on a musical instrument. You could choose any instrument your child already plays, or if they are new to learning an instrument you might start with the recorder as an inexpensive and easy to play option.

3 But we never can proveĀ

the delights of his loveĀ

until all on the altar we lay;Ā

for the favor he shows,Ā

for the joy he bestows,Ā

are for them who will trust and obey. [Refrain]

John H. Sammis was the writer of the Christian hymn Trust and Obey in 1887 with music composed by Daniel Towner the year before. Sammis was born in 1846, in Brooklyn, New York and died in 1919 in Los Angeles, California. A man of business who later turned to preaching for a Presbyterian church, John Sammis additionally wrote the popular hymn He's a Friend of Mine. He also was a teacher at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles.

The text and music first appeared in the 1887 collection, Hymns Old and New, and the hymn and has been listed in countless hymnals since then. Methodist hymnals in the United States have included it since 1897.

A Prayer for When God's Great Things Feel Small for You - Your Daily Prayer - May 30God wants you to see that every single day, He is giving you an opportunity to work for the Kingdom of God.

Sammis wrote over 100 hymns. Most of them can be categorized as "songs of trust" and "songs of obedience". They were compiled by T. C. Horton (a founder of Bible Institute of Los Angeles) and R. A. Torrey in 1918.[3]

Although this new convert had very little Bible knowledge beyond what he had just heard preached, he made the declaration to all who could hear him that he was going to place his trust in Jesus and then obey His commandments. This powerful statement of faith so moved Daniel Towner that he immediately sought out his friend John Sammis who then went on to write the lyrics for Trust and Obey.

I believe the Holy Spirit spoke powerfully that night through that young man. While we can obey someone up to a point without trusting them we will never have the type of relationship that God desires with us unless we also trust him intimately.

As new believers and young Christians we obey because we are told to do so and taught that to obey God is to please Him. Obedience is encouraged and we are taught to do certain things and to not do other things. Altogether these things give us the appearance of being good and upright, at least outwardly. There is real human effort involved and insofar as we have the strength to do so, we will remain on the path. But until we actively seek God and His presence with our whole heart and desire to know Him better, we will not have the strength to continue to obey once times get tough.

Trusting God is an expression or fruit of our faith, but it is not faith itself. Our faith is what we believe in our hearts as an outcome of being persuaded of it by God. If we limit our definition of faith as a verb and something that we do, then the idea of God granting us faith, may seem strange. Faith is not what we do, but what we possess. It is because we possess the gift of faith (being persuaded of the truth) that we are able to do what we do; that is, trust and obey.

I have just read the section in your new book concerning womb-state memories. It concerned me, when these came up spontaneously in a ministry session, as the fetus is, presumably, in a pre-cognitive, pre-memory and pre-verbal state. However, I followed protocol, treated these as real manifestations and saw genuine healings. In subsequent personal ministry, I also found myself in womb state twice, and, in the healing moments, found total relief from situations that had been bothering me.

My take on it, for what it is worth, is that we are not dealing with the brain/mind, but rather with the human spirit which, according to Proverbs 18:14, is capable of being wounded/crushed. If, as is the opinion of many, the human spirit is given by God, as a special creation, and probably imparted at the point of conception, it makes sense that that spirit is fully sensitive, fully aware and fully capable of being wounded.

Not only is He trustworthy, but the guidelines and commands He has provided in the Bible are life-giving. They bring freedom, joy and blessing! Jesus Himself emphasised the importance of loving, trusting and obeying God:

I remember, years ago, sitting in a church service with this unsettledness in my spirit. An anxiousness really. I felt as if the Holy Spirit were prompting me to go and offer a word of encouragement to someone who was sitting just a few rows in front of me. The correct response is to trust and obey what I feel God is leading me to do. Often, because of fear, I do the opposite.

So, the next time you receive a prompting, a push, a nudge from God to do something, do it. It could be as simple as sending a card, calling a friend, praying for someone. In these moments, you have an opportunity to respond. All you have to do is trust and obey.

For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in You. - Psalm 84:11-12

When we trust and obey him, He shares our burdens and shares our sorrows, dries our tears, and bestows joy in the midst of an upside-down world. He is trustworthy. What he says, he will do. We should never fear, only trust and obey.

Throughout this Day: Consider your commitment to Jesus. Have you yielded all of your life to him? Do you totally trust him? If not, take time now to lay it all on the altar and trust him with every aspect of your life.

As I read Luke 5 this week where it discusses Peter taking Jesus out on his boat in order for Jesus to teach the masses gathered along the shore of the Sea of Galilee, a particular thought hit me that I have not been able to shake.

First, Peter obeyed. Before he saw the benefits of obedience, he had to throw the net. He would have never experienced that kind of catch had he not first obeyed. In order to place himself in a position to receive the benefits of the Lord, he first needed to obey the Lord. Friends, that is true for us as well.

Until you obey, you have no idea what God will do with your obedience. And even when God does not do what you specifically want, still trust that you have placed yourself in the strongest and best place for Him to bless your obedience overall.

Hymn Challenge #12: Trust and Obey

Words Written by: John H. Sammis

b. July 6, 1846; d. June 12, 1919

Music Written by: Daniel B. Towner

b. March 5, 1850; d. October 3, 1919

John H. Sammis was a businessman and also worked at the YMCA. He then attended seminary and became an ordained Presbyterian minister in 1880. He served in Iowa, Indiana, Michigan, and Minnesota. He later taught at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles. Rev. Sammis received a note from Daniel B. Towner containing a sentence shared by a man at a testimony meeting. The sentence said: "I am not quite sure but I am going to trust, and I am going to obey." Mr. Towner s then delivered these words to Rev. Sammis who developed the lyrics to "Trust and Obey." Daniel Towner then composed the music and this hymn quickly became a favorite.

I think this hymn and Psalm 28:7 say it all for me this week. I have been living this hymn since I chose it earlier in the week. The first verse of this hymn says:

"When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,

What a glory He sheds on our way!

While we do His good will, He abides with us still,

And with all who will trust and obey."

And the scripture says:

Psalm 28:7 "The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to Him in song."

I love that first line of the hymn--"when we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word." Yes, His Word is our book for living. It's our book for parenting. It's the book that has all we need to live each day.

Two of my girls wanted to get their driver's licenses this past week. We tried to get them shortly after we moved here but they did not accept the Driver's Education they had at our previous home. So, they told us since they were getting ready to turn 18 to just wait and come back after their birthday. At that point, the DMV would not need proof of anything. Crazy! Anyway, we let their permits expire, and so they could no longer drive here. They wanted to take the test this week but they have not driven in several weeks. They were really nervous about taking the test without driving for a while. One of my girls even asked me if I could take her to the road behind us to practice. She only wanted to practice a 3-point turn before going to take the test and that was it. I didn't answer her immediately, and then God put this on my heart:

Ephesians 6:5-6 "Slaves, obey your earthly masters with respect and fear, and with sincerity of heart, just as you would obey Christ. Obey them not only to win their favor when their eye is on you, but like slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from your heart."

Colossians 3:20 "Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord."

After listening to what the Holy Spirit put on my heart, I had to tell her that we couldn't practice a 3-point turn before going to the DMV. I told her what God had put on my heart and told her how sorry I was but that I needed to obey the Lord first and foremost, and He calls me to obey the laws here. Driving illegally would be against what God wanted as we would have been breaking the law not keeping it. She understood but was of course saddened and then she became more nervous. But the hymn tells us:

"What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;

Never fear, only trust and obey."

And I am excited to tell you that God blessed our obedience, and both of our daughters got their licenses without any problem. Our third daughter has no interest in driving yet. LOL! Anyway, I was able to tell my daughter to look at what God showed her through this--He is faithful. She obeyed, and He blessed her for her obedience. And if we are filled with the Spirit, we will want to obey the Word of God. I had to serve Christ first by obeying Him and not allowing my daughter to drive and practice. It killed me as a mom. I wanted her to pass so badly, and I knew the anguish she felt by not being allowed to practice but I had to obey Christ first and not give in. Oh, but the joy we both felt after she passed was probably even more exciting than had I illegally taken her to practice her driving. Just as the second half of Psalm 28:7 says "My heart leaps for joy and I will give thanks to Him in song." The entire family has just been elated and God was glorified through it! Praise Him!

So where do you need to let go, trust His word, and obey Him? What do you need to bring to Him and trust Him fully? Or what old habit are you having trouble shaking because you are relying on self? Let go and trust Him to help you through it, and then experience the joy that comes from obedience!

Psalm 84:11-12 "For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless. O Lord Almighty, blessed is the man who trusts in You."

Proverbs 3:5-6 "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."

Listen here to Chelsea Moon with the Franz Brothers sing this beautiful hymn. I had never heard of this particular group but found this on YouTube and thought it was beautiful. I hope you enjoy it too!

For my 6x6 page today, I used a verse from the ODBD set called "Scripture Collection 9." The verse says:

Psalm 130:5 "I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His word I put my hope."

So perfect for obeying and trusting Him! I also used the Basic Grey paper pack called PB and J. I just loved the bright colors. It makes me think of when I trust and obey Him, I am filled with joy (bright, happy colors). The die cut bicycle is a new die cut from Memory Box called "Brand New Bicycle." I wanted to use it because it makes me think of riding or walking and following something--in this case following and obeying the Lord and what He wants me to do.
