Touchgrind had a strictly top-down view that made it very difficult to see what you were doing or where you were going. As such, you were mostly stuck with trying various flatground flip tricks or the occasional attempt at a grind or slide if you were lucky enough to line up with the object correctly without knowing exactly where it was. Touchgrind was neat to be sure, but quite limited, and it failed to give me the feeling of actually skating around a real open skatepark.

Control-wise, True Skate works very similar to Touchgrind, using various swipes and flicks to perform tricks with your board, and everything is based on how the physics of real skateboarding works. Tap down on the tail to pop the board up and then quickly level it off to perform a nice ollie, and like real skating every other trick branches out from there. Ollie and flick the side of your board to kickflip, or scoop down on the tail in sort of a U" shaped swipe to do a varial.

The trick here is not to ollie, if you do your board automatically slows down and you won't make the jump. Instead, try to gain speed and at the last second try doing a Pop Shove-it or simply push on the tail of the board to make it jump up, but without balancing it mid-air like you would in a regular ollie. Position yourself with enough lead-up ground and gain enough speed to jump up above that cabinet. The same principle as before applies, do not try to ollie up the shed, simply shoot your board in the air and it will get itself high enough to lend above the shed. Once there you will find yourself on a small half-pipe and the board will probably slide down. If you lend nicely enough you can continue straight up and then rest on a small platform where you can read the words "Jump" and "Do it!" and where you have a view of the entire skate-park.

Everything in the game aside from the first skate park and board costs real money or in-game currency (which can only really be earned by playing the game a lot), and there are plenty of reminders of this, some of which pop up during play.

Parents need to know that True Skate is a virtual skateboarding game with no characters and no scary crash animations -- just a board, a skate park, and your fingers acting in place of feet. The game is addictive fun, even for amateurs, but has a steep learning curve to perform more advanced tricks, so some kids might get frustrated quickly. It's important to note that the price of the app includes only one skate park and one board, while a large library of additional parks and decks is accessible via ungated in-app purchases. For casual players, one level is plenty, but for kids really interested in skateboarding, the cost could add up quickly. It's a perfect balance of easy gameplay and challenging skill development that will hook kids (or adults!) right away. Unfortunately, the purchase price only includes one deck and one skate park -- the rest must be unlocked through in-app purchases or in-game currency that takes a long time to accumulate. For the entry price, though, the starter level is plenty for quick thrills or a few (hundred) minutes of virtual extreme-sports entertainment.

There are plenty of spots for tricks, too -- the True Skate park has tons of rails, a large bowl, and even a half pipe. You can skate around and perform tricks as you explore, or start from a nearby start point (there are several scattered around the park). With the default settings, if you want to start fresh after a big crash, you have a reset button at the top of the screen to position you at the nearest starting point. But to really master a trick down a specific rail, for example, you can create a session start point in the options, which lets you try your trick, then reset back to your original position for another try.

That's not the only annoyance with True Skate. The game has a limited mission system that seems like more of an afterthought, with challenges to complete specific tricks or get a high score in a set period of time. But there's little reason to do the missions, making me believe the game was intended to be more of a free skating session. Setting a session point is harder than it needs to be, making you dig down three screens into the options to set one. Also, the included skate park is pretty good, but I hope the developers add another (or more) in the future for a more varied experience. As is, the game is plenty fun, but you will get sick of the same old area every time you play.

Overall, True Skate is probably the most realistic skateboarding game in the App Store, and it's a lot of fun with some practice. With great swipe controls, the ability to set session start points, and excellent graphics and sound, this game is easy to recommend for both skaters and fans of the sport.
