A TrackPad (or touchpad) is a touch-sensitive interface surface that allows you to manipulate and interact with your laptop computer through finger gestures. As laptops typically do not include mice, the TrackPad provides an alternative way to move the cursor around the screen, select and open applications or programs, highlight text, interact with web browsers, and more.

Hey guys. I've got an issue with my new laptops touchpad. It simply can't be found! I grep dmesg for "touch" or "elan" and I do the same for /proc/bus/input/devices, nothing is found.

I have tried both the latest kernel: linux 5.6.13.arch1-1 and the LTS kernel: 5.4.42-1-lts. No difference in results.

I've spent days and days over the last month trying to find solutions. I really think it's a Kernel issue, it's definitely not the hardware as I am dual booting Windows and the touchpad works. I have installed the related packages

I feel like the proper solution is to recompile the kernel with the support for this touchpad enabled, which is suggested here: Though it is an old thread.

It's something I want to attempt at some stage but it feels like too much atm. I've barely got comfortable on Arch and there's still lots to set up.

I should move on really, too many hours spent, but not being able to use the touchpad is getting to me!

I have the 14 inch Ideapad 5 14ARE05. My touchpad is randomly working or not, but its behavior is always the same in one session. If it does not work I am getting strange i2c_designware controller timed out messages. Can anyone confirm the behavior and/or suggest a solution?

I could already fix the backlight brightness issue I had by installing the linux-renoir-backlight module (which effectively compiles a patched custom kernel).

I've been imaging machines left and right with no issue. Not we have the Lenovo T14 (AMD) and out-of-the-box, the computer works just fine. After we image it, the touchpad doesn't work. I'm using the drivers from here for the ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 AMD ( )

My touchpad only seems to be detected by the system randomly. Most of the time it is not detected at all. But when it is detected, it is only when the laptop's battery has been fully drained and immediately booted after plugging in to AC power.

Just got a Lenovo T440p - love the laptop, hardware's great - and I was all excited to put Mint Linux on it. Install worked fine, zero show-stopper issues, but there's one persistent annoyance with it that drove me back into Win7: I can't right-click or middle-click with the Trackpoint, and the bottom-right right-click zone for the touchpad takes up nearly a quarter of its surface.

Since the new Lenovos have the Synaptics touchpad replacing the old buttons for the Trackpoint (my annoyance with replacing physical buttons with virtual ones is an entirely separate issue), it needs to be told in software to detect the clicks in the right-click and middle-click areas are, in fact, right and middle clicks, and it's simply not reading clicks in those spots as what they're supposed to be.

Edit: Upon fiddling around more with the Win7 Touchpad settings, something similar to what is built in to Win7 would be fine too: single-finger motions on the touchpad no longer moves the cursor (Trackpoint only moves it), right/middle click are restored to the Trackpoint, and two-finger gestures still work on the touchpad for scrolling. Now, I have to mention that I did not consider the "disable Touchpad" option in the Linux control panel before because I assumed that would disable the touchpad entirely and I wouldn't be able to click on anything. If I'm wrong on that, please let me know and I will happily return to Mint and set it up.

That is the default settings for the areas on the touchpad that correspond to the right-click button on the touchpad. After much, much fiddling to get the redefined areas correct, this is what should be copy-pasted in to change the right-click area to be a thin strip on the upper-right area of the touchpad:

That is as far as I am capable of taking it at this time, but that gets done most of what I wanted. I'm just reposting it here in case anyone else ever needs to see how to remap the zones on the Synaptics touchpad.

If you want to scroll through a document or web page, press and hold the middle mouse button, then use the touchpad to scroll vertically and horizontally. In Windows search, look for Mouse settings to control what the middle button does.

There are a few hardware and software causes for your Lenovo laptop touchpad (or any other laptop touchpad) to stop working. How it stops working will be relevant to troubleshooting and fixing your touchpad.

There are a few software reasons your touchpad mouse might stop working. Typically a software issue will result in the immediate cessation of touchpad function. Fortunately, you still have the trackpoint or you can attach an external mouse to help troubleshoot.

Step 3: make sure the Touchpad switch is set to On. Optionally, make sure Leave touchpad on when a mouse is connected is checked.

You may need to pay for repairs out of pocket depending on how the damage happened. At that point, you should think about whether or not the touchpad really needs to be repaired. You can always use an external mouse or the trackpoint, if available.

The Lenovo *40 series introduced a new type of touchpad. Previously, all laptops had a separate set of physical buttons for the trackstick. This series removed these buttons, relying on a software emulation of the top section of the touchpad. This is visually marked on the trackpad itself, and clicks can be triggered by pressing the touchpad down with a finger in the respective area:

The size of the buttons matches the visual markings on this touchpad. The width of the left and right buttons is approximately 42% of the touchpad's width, the middle button is centered and assigned 16% of the touchpad width.

The line of the buttons is 5mm from the top edge of the touchpad, measurements of button presses showed that the size of the buttons needs to be approximately 10mm high to work reliable (especially when using the thumb to press the button).

The top button areas work even if the touchpad is disabled but will be disabled when the trackstick device is disabled. If the finger starts inside the top area and moves outside the button area the finger is treated as dead and must be lifted to generate future buttons. Likewise, movement into the top button area does not trigger button events, a click has to start inside this area to take effect.

The firmware on the first generation of touchpads providing top software buttons is buggy and announces wrong ranges. Kernel patches are required; these fixes are available in kernels 3.14.1, 3.15 and later but each touchpad needs a separate fix.

Like it or not, companies are set on making foldable PCs a thing. Asus' Zenbook 17 Fold OLED turned out to be one of 2022's most adventurous laptops, and Lenovo is planning its second foldable, the 16-inch ThinkPad X1 Fold for this spring. Assuming an operating system and apps that play well with the form factor, foldables excite multitaskers, workers, and creatives who can benefit from larger, yet still portable, display options, especially those who don't need a keyboard and touchpad at all times.

But foldable PCs are very new and have their faults, from durability and compatibility concerns to the crease that can visibly run down the display's middle. Lenovo's Yoga Book 9i announced today at CES in Las Vegas aims to boost pixel count in a way that feels both more and less obvious: replacing the keyboard and touchpad with another laptop-size screen.

With the virtual keyboard on display, I was also able to quickly bring up a virtual touchpad by sliding the virtual keyboard up with my fingers. If this touchpad works well, it's a clever inclusion for times that you want more traditional navigation but don't have a mouse on hand. 2351a5e196
