Tokyo Revengers (Japanese: , Hepburn: Tky Manji Ribenjzu) is a 2021 Japanese science fiction action film directed by Tsutomu Hanabusa and co-written by Izumi Takahashi. It is the live-action adaptation of the manga series of the same name created by Ken Wakui, which was also made into an anime series of the same name.The film stars Takumi Kitamura, Yuki Yamada, Yosuke Sugino, Mio Imada, Shotaro Mamiya and Ryo Yoshizawa.[1] It follows a freeter who travels back and forth in time in order to prevent the death of his ex-girlfriend at the hands of a criminal gang.
During the year 2017, Takemichi Hanagaki, a 26-year-old freeter, learns that his middle school ex-girlfriend Hinata Tachibana and her younger brother Naoto Tachibana have been killed by the Tokyo Manji Gang (also known as Toman). When Takemichi is pushed in front of a train, he teleports exactly 12 years into the year 2005. While reliving his middle school years, Takemichi meets with Naoto and divulges the exact date that he and Hinata will die. When they shake hands, Takemichi is suddenly transported back to the present, creating a time paradox where Naoto survives and is now a detective.

Naoto deduces that every time they hold hands, Takemichi is transported 12 years into the past. Using his knowledge from the future, Takemichi vows to save Hinata. Travelling back to the past, Takemichi's friends are forced into underground matches led by Kiyomasa, a member of the Toman. Takemichi's determination to protect them gains the respect of the gang's leader Manjiro Sano aka "Mikey". Takemichi discovers that his new friendship with Mikey prevented one of his friends Akkun, from going to prison in the present. However, Akkun commits suicide out of fear, where Takemichi realizes the Toman presents a stronger threat to his friends than he initially thought.
Takemichi travels back to his past and finds that the Tokyo Manji Gang is declaring war on Moebius, a rival gang, to avenge Pah-chin's friend. Takemichi learns that Mikey's second-in-command Ken Rygji aka "Draken" will eventually be killed and lead to Mikey becoming violent. Draken survives the rumble, but Pah-chin turns himself to the police after stabbing Moebius' leader Osanai, which later causes infighting within the Toman. Takemichi finally resolves Mikey and Draken's dispute. On August 3, 2005, the Tokyo Manji Gang are attacked by a group of Moebius members, who are led by Valhalla member Shji Hanma.
Takemichi learns that Peh-yan colluded with them out of anger for Mikey and Draken letting Pah-chin be arrested, while Kiyomasa had stabbed Draken for humiliating him and causing him to be exiled from the Tokyo Manji Gang. The Tokyo Manji Gang wins the fight, where Takemichi defeats Kiyomasa and admits Draken to the hospital. Draken recovers from his injuries and Peh-yan apologizes for his actions. Takemichi travels back to the present timeline and heads to Hinata's house to meet Naoto, where he finally meets Hinata.
The Tokyo Revengersseries is truly on the rise as both the manga and anime series had performed so well, that it was given its very own live-action film. While the plot itself is complex and captivating, it's the colorful cast that fans go crazy for.
Live-action adaptations of anime can be tricky since diehard fans can be difficult to please when it comes to finding the right person to cast to take on the role of their favorite characters on the big screen. However, Tokyo Revengers fans have nothing to worry about as the live-action film absolutely nailed the casting process and truly brought the characters to life. Here are all the Tokyo Revengers characters side-by-side with their live-action counterparts.
Updated January 20, 2023, by Christine Mendoza: The next Tokyo Revengers live-action film is on its way, giving fans a sneak peek at the new additions to the cast with the latest movie trailer. The Tokyo Revengers 2: Bloody Halloween Part 1 and 2 films are set to release this year in April 21st and June 30th, respectively. With the Halloween arc coming up, fans were rushing to see the live-action actors for the characters that were missing from the previous film. Namely, Baji, Kazutora, and Takemichi's right-hand man, Chifuyu, are the characters that will take the main stage for this arc, and the long-awaited cast has finally been revealed. To keep the overall cast up-to-date, the trio has been added to the ever-growing list, so fans can compare all their favorite characters side-by-side.
Actor Kento Nagayama is a fantastic choice for Baji Keisuke. Aside from the accurate hairstyling and wardrobe, Nagayama's sharp facial features and expressions definitely hit the mark when trying to capture the snarky sneer and grin Baji is known for.
So far, audiences have seen Nagayama in Baji's signature look for the arc, sporting his Valhalla bomber jacket and black and gray striped shirt underneath. It seems as if the original white color of the Valhalla jackets has been replaced with a darker gray color for the live-action. In addition to this change, Baji's signature black choker and silver cross (usually seen in his original manga art) are nowhere to be seen on Nagayama's rendition; perhaps to make his look more clean and less busy.
While Murakami's rendition of Kazutora isn't a spitting image of his original anime design, the team behind the live action film definitely did the right thing when tweaking his Kazutora's look. Many of the other cast members look fantastic when brought to life in the live action, however, some hairstyles and fashion choices just don't transfer over to real life as well as others.
Kazutora's chunky bright blonde highlights may have been a bit of an eyesore in the live-action rendition of the series if preserved the way they were in the anime, so keeping a majority of Murakami's hair his natural color with minimal pops of blonde was definitely the best way to go. Murakami's rendition of Kazutora (aside from the change to his hair) is spot on; including his iconic neck tattoo and singular bell earring.
So far, audiences have only seen Takasugi's rendition of Chifuyu in the past. Before the timeskip back to the future, Chifuyu is still in his teenage punk era with complete with his "rebellious" blonde hair, which is the version of Chifuyu mainly seen through the arc. Unfortunately, blonde hair doesn't suit everyone, but luckily, Takasugi has nothing to worry about as he pulls it off effortlessly for his role as Chifuyu.
Aside from replacing Chifuyu's bandaged eye being replaced with a more conventional regular eye patch, Takasugi's Chifuyu is incredibly accurate so far; from his signature beige hoodie, and blonde hair, right down to the small detail of his single hoop earring.
A handful of the characters from the series have a few different iterations of themselves, just like in the anime/manga. Of course, protagonist Takemichi gets to debut both his present-day and teenage delinquent versions of himself in the movie.
Actor, Takumi Kitamura nailed Takemichi's role; not only did he look just as disheveled as present-day Takemichi, but he even fully committed to blonde teenage Takemichi by sporting bleached hair rather than a wig for his role. Kitamura really shines in the spotlight and easily pulls off both renditions of Tokyo Revengers' crybaby protagonist.
Mikey is played by Ryo Yoshizawa (known for his roles in Gintama and Bleach movies) and his look is kept as faithful to the anime/manga as it possibly could have been. Both past and present versions of the unstoppable Mikey have been taken straight out of the animated series and put on screen.
Yoshizawa's amazingly accurate rendition of Mikey doesn't stop there; beyond his looks, Yoshizawa also steals the spotlight when it comes to the fights in the movie, kicking butt with style and his favorite kind of dorayaki hanging from his mouth.
Mikey's right-hand man, Draken, is played by Yuki Yamada. Aside from Yamada's version of Draken having a more dirty-blonde hair color rather than the true bleach/platinum blonde, his hair and costume are all spot on. One look at Yamada in costume and any Tokyo Revengers fan would recognize him as tough guy Draken.
From his wardrobe down to the signature dragon tattoo he has on the side of his head, all the right details were taken into account when the makeup and costume departments gave Yamada his Tokyo Revengers makeover.
While actor Yosuke Sugino may look a bit silly playing middle-school Naoto Tachibana, he absolutely nails the role of detective Naoto when he is older. The casting for Hinata's baby brother is fantastic as Sugino looks like Naoto himself stepped right out of the anime.
Sugino's rendition of Naoto is a bit less soft-spoken and comes off a bit more aggressive towards Takemichi during their meetings. However, outside of being a bit less shy when it comes to scolding his partner, Takemichi, his aesthetic is a perfect iteration of detective Naoto Tachibana.
Takemichi's best friend from the delinquent days of his youth, Akkun, has a few different variations of his character design, just like the anime and manga. Hayato Isomura plays Akkun perfectly, no matter what time period.
The role of Akkun is rather demanding as Isomura needed a complete costume and style change more than anyone else in the film. Isomura nails Akkun's signature red pompadour in his youth while swapping out the fully shaved look for a slicked-back hairstyle instead; but still keeping his toughened, tatted-up sleeves.
Akkun can be seen once again briefly near the end of the film as Takemichi makes his way to Hinata's place. Instead of returning to his pompadour once again like in the anime, Isomura's version sports a reddish-brown hairdo styled in a coif.
Takemichi's sweetheart, Hinata Tachibana is played by the beautiful and talented Mio Imada. Hinata may be the character they changed the most during the transition to the live-action movie when it comes to her appearance. 152ee80cbc
