In Upstate New York, the Altmans gather for the funeral at their mother's home, where they reconnect with Wendy's ex-boyfriend Horry Callen, who suffered a brain injury years before, and his mother Linda. Wendy is unhappy because her workaholic husband Barry neglects her. Judd reunites with his older brother Paul and Paul's wife Annie, who had once been Judd's girlfriend. The youngest brother, Phillip, arrives late with his new girlfriend, Tracy, who is his former therapist and several years his senior.

During a family gathering, Wendy drunkenly badgers Judd to tell the truth about Quinn. Phillip laments being seen as the family screw-up, while flirting with another woman in front of Tracy. Judd blurts out that Quinn was cheating on him and he plans to divorce her. Quinn shows up the next day and reveals she's pregnant with Judd's child. Phillip finds out about the pregnancy and reveals this to the family.

Judd spends the night with Penny, and then spends the day with her. Wendy visits Horry in his backyard, and expresses remorse over the accident that caused Horry's brain injury. The family goes to temple, where the brothers sneak out to smoke marijuana Judd found in his father's suit. Annie, upset that she and Paul haven't conceived, tries to seduce Judd in hopes that he will impregnate her, but he rejects her. A few days later, after Barry leaves for a conference, Wendy has sex with Horry, with whom she is still in love.

Paul attacks Judd as Tracy leaves Phillip, resulting in the three brothers fighting. Hilary silences everyone by kissing Linda passionately. She informs them that she and Linda are in love and that they had Mort's blessing. She admits the shiva was her idea, in order to come out to her children and get them to reconnect. The siblings are shocked, but see their mother is happy and accept it.

Now Susan, I bet everyone in the theatre was shushing you as you said, ooooh look at that wainscoting and do you see the wallpaper? Now just look at the crown molding!!! ?

The first time I saw it was in their living room . . . seeing the room I was watching it in was surreal! The house is suppose to be in Indiana, but is actually on the north shore of New Orleans, where the story takes place.

Hubby and I saw this over the weekend. I was immediately captivated by the home and furnishings. The upholstered chairs in the bedroom and the living room were just lovely, as was that delicious blue tile around the fireplace. The cast was wonderful, and we enjoyed it very much!

I love this site! I too loved the aqua/gold floral pattern wallpaper in the front room of this house. Does anyone have a clue where to find it? Most of my searches left me with ugly patterns from the 80s.

Where to begin in my review of this disaster of a novel? With the nonstop implausible sex and violence? With the children who speak and act like sitcom children rather than the real thing? With the hackneyed displays of emotion? With the clunky transitions in and out of flashbacks? With the prose that sometimes descends into the sorts of sentences that 10th graders are asked to fix in grammar workbooks? Choices abound.

Munsey Park is a village on Long Island right outside Manhasset, which, in 2008, was named the 13th wealthiest neighborhood in America. This checks out as the Altman's house is a beautiful white home with a large front yard and a current estimated value of almost $3 million. The house in This Is Where I Leave You is where the family gathers for the week to mourn their father's death. Unfortunately, they're still dealing with resentment toward each other that they've been holding onto since childhood as well as coping with their adult relationship issues, making it hard to spend a peaceful week together.

As a part of their week-long Shiva, the family, including Wendy, played by Tina Fey, goes to the synagogue to honor their father. The family struggles to be mature for the ceremony, and Judd and his brother Phillip Altman sneak off to get high and are later scolded when they're caught. It's not confirmed where the inside scenes were shot, but the exteriors were done at Congregation Kneses Tifereth Israel in Port Chester, in the town of Rye in Westchester County, New York.

While Judd is out with Penny, Quinn calls him in a panic, thinking she is having another miscarriage. He quickly calls 911 and sends an ambulance to her. Quinn is taken to the hospital, where Judd and his boss, Wade Beaufort (Dax Shepard), show up to support her. The scene was shot at Good Samaritan Hospital in a village called Suffern in Rockland County, west of Westchester and also about 30 miles away from Manhattan.

This Is Where I Leave You reveals Judd's family owns a sports equipment store called Altman's Sporting Goods while he's driving through the neighborhood. He goes inside, and this is where he's reunited with Penny for the first time. The location was actually a store called Sportset/Tennis Junction, located in Great Neck, New York. Unfortunately, the store closed in 2017. Great Neck is on the north shore of Long Island and is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in America.

This Is Where I Leave You utilizes many exteriors for scenes like car rides and walks. The filmmakers used Purchase Street in Rye, New York, for many of these exteriors. It's not clear which scenes were shot here or where the exact locations are, but it was used for miscellaneous scenes throughout the Shawn Levy-directed film.

While not every book to film change has an explanation, this one has a pretty reasonable one. Director Shawn Levy struggled to get legal clearances to use Foxman. Levy told Entertainment Weekly that if there are people in the area where the film takes place with a specific name, that name can't be used. Luckily he and Tropper came up with the name Altman while going back and forth with Jewish-sounding names.

Two more name changes occur with Jen and Alice Foxman. Jen is Judd's wife in the book, and Alice is married to Judd's brother Paul Foxman. However, in the This Is Where I Leave You film, Jen's name changes to Quinn, and Alice changes to Annie. Unlike the last name change, there isn't much explanation about why this change occurred though it could also be related to legal reasons.

One crucial storyline from the book regarding Paul was left out of the movie. In both the book and the film, Paul and Judd have a tense relationship and a lot of resentment toward each other. Part of this is rooted in Paul marrying Annie, who Judd previously dated. However, the book has a much darker storyline. When the brothers were younger, Paul defended Judd against a school bully. As a result, he was attacked by a Rottweiler. The dog damaged Paul's throwing arm irreparably, which ended his up-and-coming football career. This added a lot to Paul and Judd's dynamic and justified why Paul resented his younger brother in Tropper's fictional story. Unfortunately, the This Is Where I Leave You film did not mention the incident.

A small difference between the film and the movie is how the siblings deal with Judd's boss. In the book, the youngest brother Phillip Altman (Adam Driver), punches Wade. This makes sense because Phillip is immature and incapable of growing up, so it would be he who chooses violence over using his words to defend his older brother. However, the film decided Wendy Altman (Fey) should be the one to injure Judd's boss instead. Levy said this is because Wendy was the voice of reason for Judd in the film and always gave him advice. So the director thought it would make sense that she's the one to defend him against Wade.

Speaking of Wendy, she had a larger role in the film than in the book. In the movie, Fey's character struggles with her marriage and feels like she has no connection to her husband despite sharing kids with him. She also reconnects with her disabled high school boyfriend, Horry Callen. While these storylines are present in the book, Wendy has more scenes in the movie, including where she punches Wade. She has a lot of one on one talks with Judd as well. The reason behind this was likely to give a bigger perspective from the only sister in the family, and because Fey played the role of Wendy, it would be unfortunate to waste her talent and comedy by only having her play a small part in This Is Where I Leave You.

Judd Altman (Jason Bateman) works at a radio station for popular host Wade Beaufort (Dax Shepard). After work, Judd gets a cake for his wife Quinn's (Abigail Spencer) birthday, only to come home and find her having sex in his bed with Wade. Judd asks how long this has been going on, and Quinn says a year. This is where Judd leaves her.

After the funeral, Boner tells the Altmans that their father wanted them to sit shiva, meaning they must stay for a whole week with each other. Phillip gets a phone call and goes outside to bring a woman inside. Her name is Tracy (Connie Britton), and she is his therapist. She is a fan of Hillary's, as Hillary is known for writing a tell-all book called "Cradle and All", which overshares a lot of the siblings' childhood, like Wendy being sexually active and Paul masturbating. Wendy's son Cole (Cade Lappin) comes in to poop in his training toilet and throws his poo at his dad (still on the phone). He and Wendy argue, and the others leave.

The siblings continue to bond rather reluctantly, between going to drinks and joining with Penny, and having to sit shiva. Phillips drives Judd around in his car and laments being seen as the family screw-up. He drives recklessly, making Judd nervous. Phillip drops him off at the skating center where Penny works. Together, she and Judd skate to Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time". 2351a5e196
