"The Perfect Girl" is a 2015 song by artist Mareux that is a cover of a 1987 song by The Cure. On April 21st, 2015, LA-based music producer Mareux (Aryan Ashtiani) released his single "The Perfect Girl," a coldwave cover of a 1987 song by The Cure. The song accumulated over 3.5 million views on Soundcloud[1] and 433,000 views on YouTube[2] in seven years. In 2021, Mareux released the song on Spotify,[3] where it accumulated over 30 million streams in one year.

The song did not achieve massive virality until July 23rd, 2021, when TikToker[4] @electraviolence.c used the song in a fancam of actress Nikki Reed, which gained over 256,400 views and 22,900 likes in six months (shown below). For example, a tutorial video by TikToker[6] jannestwelve received over 1.6 million views and 231,000 likes in three months (shown below, center).
In the following months, more viral TikToks[7] using the song were uploaded to the app. On January 7th, 2021, a Vibing Cat gimmick Twitter[8] account @cadancingg posted the song, with the meme gaining over 50,200 views, 760 retweets and 2,500 likes (shown below).
Starting in mid-January, @asimbawe and other Twitter users posted video caption memes based on the song and its sped-up version, both reusing the clip from American Psycho and using other clips from this and other "based" films.
In 2021, Mareux broke through in popularity when his 2015 cover of The Cure's "The Perfect Girl" went viral on TikTok. A few famous users on the app used the song in the summer of 2021 and it began the song's spread throughout the community. It is often used in association with fan edits of the film American Psycho.[6] The viral success of "The Perfect Girl" allowed Mareux to shoot a music video for the song in 2022 starring Violet Chachki, the winner of the seventh season of RuPaul's Drag Race.[1] As of April 2022, "The Perfect Girl" has received 2.3 billion plays on TikTok.[7] It also has over 250 million plays on Spotify as of May 2023.[8]
But at the same time, you can fall in love with someone that everyone else writes off as "normal" or stereotypes & to you and only you they are perfect b/c of what you see in them. So who knows how strange she really is?

I love it. Idk if this is really an interpretation but I just really need to share this, even if it's about a girl it reminds me about my boyfriend a lot, it makes me feel so strange but I love feeling like this. I don't know what feeling it is but it's a mix of sad and happy, I'm happy I'm finally with him after almost two years, I'm happy I managed to get this lucky. My own interpretation of his attraction in her because she's strange is that he's strange too, and maybe this girl could be someone just as strange as him.
Another interpretation is that he's delusional and is stalking this girl that he's so fascinated with, falling in love with her- but I prefer the first one.
