"Know" was later changed to "say" by those of the new age church in the early 1900s. Anyone can say their painful lot is well with their soul to sound like a Christian. But to know it in your heart and gut is something much different. Words are cheap, while knowledge comes from walking out one's faith as did Horatio Spafford.
Horatio was on his way to meet his heartbroken wife, passing over the same sea that had just claimed the lives of his remaining children. It was then that he put his pen to paper and the timeless hymn was born, beginning with the words:

Late in 1873 Horatio G. Spafford (b. North Troy, NY, 1828; d. Jerusalem, 1888) and his family were scheduled to travel from the United States to Europe. Delayed by pressing business, Spafford sent his wife and daughters ahead on the French liner Ville du Havre. The ship collided with the English ship Lochearn on November 22 and sank in just twelve minutes. Spafford's wife was saved, but his daughters perished. After arriving in Wales, Mrs. Spafford cabled her husband, "Saved alone." Spafford then left by boat to meet her. Near the tragic scene on the high seas he wrote this text. Upon hearing the news, evangelist Dwight L. Moody, a friend of the Spaffords, traveled to England to comfort them. He reported that Spafford said about the tragic event, "It is well; the will of God be done." Philip P. Bliss, another family friend, wrote the tune for Spafford's text. Both text and tune were published in Gospel Hymns No. 2 (1876), a hymnal compiled by Ira D. Sankey (PHH 73) and Bliss.
The text conveys a sense of trust and ultimate peace with God's plan for our lives. Even in the face of "sorrows" and Satan's temptations, the Christian believes "it is well with my soul" (st. 1-2). That experience of trust and peace derives from knowing with certainty that Christ has paid the penalty for "my sin, not in part, but the whole" (st. 3).The final stanza affirms that it will also be "well with my soul" on the great day of Christ's return. This hymn has brought comfort to many Christians.
Upon receiving news of the tragedy, Spafford immediately set out for Europe to be with his grieving wife. While on the journey, Spafford wrote a poem that would later be set to music and become one of the most beloved hymns of all time: "It is Well with My Soul."

In 1873, Horatio Spafford penned the lyrics of one of the most-loved hymns of all time, It is Well with My Soul. But should we sing a song by one such as Spafford, in light of the fact that he is known to have promoted beliefs contrary to Scripture?
God has used this song in my life struggles as a Christian and pilgrim on a spiritual journey. I have endured the buffeting of Satan and surely trials have come my way. Starting off very well in life, becoming a Christian at age 17 and lived to be taught in life and doctrine at the feet of some of the best living theologians in the world. Got well to Tertiary Education, lived faithfully the truths I learned as a young convert. Found good employment that was fulfilling and rare among my peers at the time. Started a family and for a moment thought all was settled and ready to chew the cud. Alas our enemy the devil is sprawling around looking for one to devour. Before long our paths met leaving me with an indelible mark of signs of the battlefield. Just like Simon Peter who was sifted by Satan severely, I was severely tested too. Thank God for Christ who prayed not only for Peter but for all of us too. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers- Luke 22:32. Thank God for a second chance, I have since picked up my broken pieces, taken them to the Lord so He can make a perfect heart. I have been to the deepest darkest, I have since known the hearts of men- reformed and otherwise- known loss of friends, abandonment, wealth and all relations with the mighty of Christendom on earth. But all things work for good to those that qualify to be called that love the Lord. In the process, I came to identify with the hymn writer of this hymn. I see many similarities as I read through this song.
Devotion: This hymn is using a river as a metaphor for the amount of peace that one can experience in their life. Peace, like a great roaring river, can flow through your life because of a right relationship with God. Only those who have gone through deep waters and bitter trials can know the comfort and re-assurance that the Lord so lovingly gives in those hours of darkness when we cry out for his help.

This is the first thing every mother needs to settle. Actually this needs to be settled in the life of every person. Think of the plane and the instructions regarding the use of oxygen mask in case of air failure. Put your must on before helping another person is what we are told to do. We must put on self first and until then only can we help a child. We can not help others until all is well with ourselves.
Mr. Spafford left Chicago immediately to reunite with his wife. While crossing the ocean is was said that he was called by the captain to the stern of the ship and told that they were approaching the location of the accident. Standing over the waters where his children perished, he began to pen the words to this classic hymn.

This is my favorite hymn! The words are so beautiful and comforting. No matter what this life has to throw at us we can rest knowing that nothing can touch our soul or steal what God has waiting for us in heaven. Amen!
Obviously, the funeral for an elderly person who lived a productive life is different from the service for a young one taken too early, but when a period of suffering was endured before death, there is often, as you know, a sense of relief at the service that can be supported with the right music. "It is Well With My Soul" is one Christian hymn that expresses faith in God and peace with loss.
