The Grimace Shake was a berry-flavored milkshake sold at McDonald's restaurants in the United States from June 12 to July 9, 2023.[1] The Grimace shake celebrated the 52nd birthday of Grimace, the purple milkshake-loving character from McDonaldland.[2][3] The shake gained a lot of popularity on TikTok with the #GrimaceShake trend, where users filmed themselves drinking the shake and then finding themselves in ominous situations.[4][5] McDonald's said they did not orchestrate the TikTok trend but benefited in sales from the increased attention.[6][7] McDonald's also tried to advertise the shake by changing Grimace's Fandom wiki-page to a promotional advertisement, which angered some fans.[8]

The character Grimace was first introduced in the McDonaldland media franchise in 1971 as "Evil Grimace".[2][3] His original character had four arms and would steal people's milkshakes.[2] McDonald's soon changed his character to a purple, smiling blob with two arms and a love for milkshakes who accompanied Ronald McDonald and other benevolent characters in advertisements and commercials.[2][3] Some McDonald's representatives described Grimace as an "embodiment of a milkshake or a taste bud", but his identity remains up to interpretation for many fans.[9][3] McDonald's describes that Grimace is a character who comes from Grimace Island, along with other family members including Uncle O'Grimacey who is known for bringing Shamrock Shakes for Saint Patrick's Day.[2][3] The exact date of his birthday is uncertain, though during the Grimace Birthday promotion in June 2023 he was stated to be 52 years old.[10]

The Grimace Shake is a purple, berry-flavored milkshake.[11] It is a combination of vanilla soft serve and berry flavors.[12] The flavor was not disclosed by the company.[4] Many also reported that they tasted other flavors like Fruity Pebbles or bubblegum.[12] The shake was released as a standalone product and as part of the Grimace Birthday Meal, which consists of the shake, medium fries, and a choice of a Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets.[11]

Some have been confused as to what the Grimace shake tastes like, with McDonalds employees citing that it tastes like "Grimace" after being asked by a customer about its flavor.[15] In addition to this confusion, the Grimace Shake received polarized reviews.[15] Dane Rivera of Uproxx called it the best flavor in the McDonald's milkshake lineup.[16] Delish gave it a positive review, calling it "the sweetest berry smoothie of your life".[17] Reachel Chapman, writing for Elite Daily, was "not a fan of the flavor", which she described as "very fruity and artificial tasting".[18] A review by Insider described the taste as smooth and not too sweet, but also artificial and ultimately underwhelming.[19] Steven Luna of Mashed.com said that despite the shake being "pretty" and "magical-looking", it was disappointing and a "troubling tribute to a garrulous grape-colored goofball who deserves so much better".[20]

A TikTok video trend with the hashtag #GrimaceShake began circulating after the release of the shake.[9] In the video, users recorded themselves wishing Grimace a happy birthday while drinking the shake and giving the shake outstanding reviews.[9] The video then cuts to a scene of the users finding themselves in unusual positions and in strange locations, or being discovered dead while covered in the drink.[21] The videos are staged to look like a crime scene with the shake splattered around, implying that Grimace is the assassin who is responsible for their transformation.[22][9][23] The first instance of this trend was created by TikTok user @thefrazmaz (Austin Frazier).[2] This trend stemmed from a similar trend involving the Whopper released to promote Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse due to both products having unnatural colors.[23] The trend spread to other products, such as Barbie-themed products by Krispy Kreme and Cold Stone, where consumers appear more feminine or "yassified" after consumption.[24][25] As of July 12, the hashtag had over one billion views.[2]

McDonald's did not anticipate the Grimace Shake's popularity or its related trends.[2] The company responded publicly to the trend with a TikTok video starring Grimace captioned: "meee pretending i don't see the grimace shake trendd", a humorous attempt from McDonald's to inadvertently address the trend while claiming Grimace's innocence.[2] In this way, McDonald's indirectly addressed the #GrimaceShake trend while still allowing for open interpretation by the audience.[28]

Apparently, this shake is to die for. A TikTok trend of people trying Grimace's berry-flavored purple milkshake and then pretending to die has finally gotten the McDonald's monster to respond to the absurdist fad.

Videos uploaded to TikTok show mostly teens and other young customers trying the shake and wishing Grimace a happy birthday, but then the clips sharply take a morbid tone. The videos abruptly cut to the subjects pretending to be dead with the shake oftentimes spilled or splattered nearby.

Recipe developer Miriam Hahn brings us this recipe for DIY deluxe Grimace shake and says, "I love hopping onto the current trends, so of course I had to join the bandwagon and create my own Grimace shake. I decided to use a combination of blueberries, raspberries, and blue spirulina to get the beautiful purple color and the taste is even better than the real thing!" Read on to learn how to whip together your own Grimace shake and decide for yourself.

Frozen blueberries and fresh raspberries make for the fruity base of this milkshake. "I like using the combination of some frozen fruit and some fresh so that we get an icy yet creamy shake. I typically have frozen wild blueberries in the house so that is what I've used here but standard frozen blueberries work just as well," Hahn shares.

We'll also need some vanilla ice cream, milk, and a spray can of whipped cream. To really enhance the purple color, we're using blue spirulina. To really make our shake festive, we'll lastly need some fun-colored sprinkles.

Other easy ways to customize your shake include switching up the toppings. If you're a fan of minimalism, you may want to skip the whipped cream and sprinkles altogether. If you're a maximalist, you may opt to make your own whipped cream and, while you're at it, why not add in a little more spirulina powder? The only thing better than a purple milkshake is one with a purple whipped cream to match, and perhaps tack on some purple sprinkles for good measure.

Yesterday, I shot a video of myself at the Penn Station McDonalds, reviewing the new Grimace Birthday Meal (shake, my first Big Mac, and fries). That video will never, ever see the light of day, but I’ll tell you my takeaways:

Everyone who reads this letter knows we love the McDonald’s social media strategy right now. We love the Grimace takeover, we love the nostalgic commercial. That’s what drove me to get the shake.

While I was going to get the shake, I thought about if this might be a response to Erewhon’s virality with their smoothie drops with celebrities like Hailey Bieber, Bella Hadid, and Kourtney Kardashian.

The packaging is great. Bags, cardboard containers, and the plastic shake cup are all covered with confetti/sprinkles that make it feel like it’s everyone’s birthday. I texted a few founders and brand consultants that I’m friends with from the middle of Herald Square and asked how McDonald’s has inspired their careers. They all said McDonald’s is the best brand.

Besides gooey death, the Grimace Shake has been shown to induce heavy intoxication, demonic possession, and insanity. Some splash the milkshake on their clothes and surroundings to look like a crime scene, or rather, a "Grime Scene," dubbing Grimace a "Griminal."

Grimace, the best friend of Ronald McDonald, made his debut in a 1971 commercial. He is an amorphous purple blob with short arms and legs that some speculate is the embodiment of a milkshake or a taste bud.

The TikTok user @ruiz_alv04 posted a video of a young boy excitedly sipping the viral purple drink before quickly cutting to a shot of the boy sprawled across the road with the milkshake spilled everywhere.

"Just got the new Grimace shake, I'm gonna give it a try," the TikToker @_loganross said in another video before sipping the special milkshake. The video then immediately cut to them pretending to be unconscious, sprawled face-forward against a purple-liquid-covered wall, while he coughed and sputtered out the drink.

TikTok users are seemingly amused with his video, which has garnered more than 6.1 million views as of June 27. "Grimace is inside you," a top comment with more than 34,300 likes read. "Best outcome of getting a grimace shake," another comment said.

The campaign clearly resonated, and the big story was the overwhelming popularity of the Grimace Shake which outperformed all other shake flavors by at least 6.2 percentage points. Nearly one in three (29.5%) consumers called the Grimace Shake their favorite shake flavor. The closest competitor was the chocolate shake (23.3%) followed by strawberry (16.7%).

Starting June 12, McDonald's will officially launch a "Grimace Birthday Meal and Shake," which includes a choice of Big Mac or 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, a medium French fry, and McD's first-ever purple shake, "inspired by the iconic color and sweetness of our purple pal," the announcement says.

Great review and I agree with everything you said. I found out that apparently some locations do offer a la carte ordering of the shake but none of them offer it through the app or on third party delivery apps. So I guess it is just hit or miss. 2351a5e196
