I nothing that 'Handbrake' now can create recodes that can create MKV files where you can have subtitles & these you can turn subtitles on/off. Is there any android player app that can do this?

I have been trying to use an .srt file for a timed text source (Only available in android 4.1+ -4.1.html#Multimedia) . The first problem has to do with getting a file descriptor for the .srt file (in the assets folder, how else would you bundle it in your app?). The file gets compressed automatically so you won't be able to even see the file without changing compile settings or doing a custom build. The easiest solution was to rename the .srt file to .jpg so that it does not get compressed and the openFD method still works. I am now adding the TimedTextSource with:

The implementation below was an attempt to bridge compatibility with older devices. At this point, I suggest using the TimedText framework (which worked fine in KitKat), or newer alternatives released by android, as a custom solution might have significant maintenance cost.

My current phone, ((Alcatel 1(2021)) and my previous phone (Imo Q4) both have a massive problem with subtitles. They are tiny. Basically the subtitles are like the bottom row of an opticians chart, the one you're not expected to be able to read comfortably. This subtitle functionality is actually quite new for the Now Android app and there's quite a good chance it doesn't work for content it was uploaded to the system a couple of years ago and I can only assume it's because the assets that are held on their servers four said content contain parameters which prevent the video player from altering the subtitles according to system settings.
One thing they really need to stop doing that his hard coding the subtitles to the video layer for content for contains overseas language. I need to be making proper subtitle tracks and putting the subtitles on the subtitle layer.
@commanda6 @RoyB the same subject came up a number of weeks ago and I tested all my available devices. Despite going into my system settings (OnePlus 7t) and changing subtitles size, the text stayed very small on 'The Last of Us' which like White Lotus, is a very recent upload.

The player used under the hood in CAF receiver is MPL(for HLS) or Shaka (for DASH). The position of subtitles should depend on the information within subtitle file.
