I developed a half-ass Tampermonkey script that automatically monitors network request and look for this pattern. I reached a stage where I can press a hotkey to download the current subtitle. Then it occurred to me I should search if someone already develop such userscript for Tampermonkey and I found this one. This method is not among the top Google / reddit so I want to let more people know and save you some time.

When I watch a DVD of a Japanese TV show or movie with subtitles enabled, I notice that the subtitles are typically a simplified and sometimes even substantially different version of what the characters are saying.

I've asked about this a little bit on lang-8, and got an answer like "the subtitles would take up too much space otherwise." This doesn't make a ton of sense to me, since English shows often have multiple lines of text as subtitles without an issue. I think I also heard someone suggest that a full transcription couldn't be read fast enough, but that seems suspicious. I realize there is a far wider set of symbols to recognize in that amount of time than the English alphabet, but it's never seemed that Japanese people read slower.

Other options such as outline/color/position would be cool too (eg. if a person wanted one on the top of the screen and another on the bottom for some reason), but I understand that adding so many options for individual subtitles could be pretty troublesome.

This would be awesome! The drop-shadow it has right now makes it really hard for me to read the subtitles. I would love it if you could make it customizable so that it has a black outline rather than a dropshadow.

I love the way Japanese shows subtitle things, with relevant typesettings and pausing for the joke. English subtitlers just like to plonk the whole line on the screen in one go, and completely give the joke away.

I think Japanese subtitles started to be a help somewhere around level 30? I remember watching Fury Road with Japane se subs and was able to grasp most of what I read at level 26 or so. Though most Fury Road dialogue was pretty simple.

A good friend suggested that using Japanese subtitles is an obstacle to developing the ability to hear Japanese. I would not go that far. In fact I think it helps. However, hearing is a distinct skill in itself, and it is not the primary one that learning Japanese through anime with Japanese subtitles is intended to develop.

The indication that hearing is a separate skill from other understanding, and the signal that you are ready for some phase 2 anime watching, is when you can understand an anime pretty easily with Japanese subtitles, but not much at all without them. This is a clear indication that the problem is with listening recognition itself and not primarily with vocabulary or grammar.

Received Japanese subtitles in SRT format for my new film from company based in Japan (My film is in Bangla, with English subtitles). They recommended Heisei Mincho, ten Mincho, or DNP Shuei Mincho Pr6N from the Adobe Creative Cloud font library. I was able to find the first two and installed those. They also sent a second list of FA Maru Gothic TV, MS Gothic, and MS P Gothic, out of which I was able to find Heisei Maru Gothic Std and installed that. When I SELECT ALL on the SRT and change it to one of these fonts, it does not work.

Well, there's a scan going around on a few forums claiming to be from a pamphlet an employee picked up at the Los Angeles Convention Center whilst setting up for E3. It appears to show the subtitle of the new Zelda game, but it's in Japanese:

I can read the katakana and hiragana alphabets just as well as i can read english, but im not that good at kanji, particularly when its as blurred as that. The middle word is of, so it's "something of something", and considering the style of text and image there, I'm gonna say that's just a japanese logo of ocarina of time.

I know this isn't a popular rumour around here, but personally I think this Twilight Princess/Tasogare no Himegimi subtitle is very intriguing since twilight/tasogare is a word that can have several different interpretations. Just look at Yoji Yamada's The Twilight Samurai (aka Tasogare Seibei) This title could also explain the cloaked character on the EGM scan. I'm not swallowing the hook just yet though, since it would be quite easy to manufacture that image with Tasogare no Himegimi written...

princess of twilight may be the japanese title, but it may get a slight alteration overseas. Word order, synonyms and similies can be used to change it, like some have said. then again, the treehouse (assuming they are the ones naming it for overseas) may decide on something completely left feild.

If subtitles for a title are offered in a language but do not display on your device, try another device. The Netflix app may not support subtitles for some languages including Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Romanian, or Vietnamese on devices manufactured before 2014, but most newer devices do support them.

To get good at conversations, you need to have conversations. This is why people are shocked at their first conversation, despite studying for several months before having it. Listening is the same. To get good at listening, you need to listen, without the assistance of Japanese subtitles.

In the scheme of things that are good and bad for your Japanese, Japanese subtitles are not bad at all. The worst case scenario is a slower development of your listening ability, in exchange for greater reading.

Japanese subtitles in moderation is fine, especially if it helps your immersion. But it also depends on your level. If you are already at a pretty high level, you may want to decrease how often you do this.

English subtitles on Japanese DVDs2008/8/5 19:49 I live in Australia, but will be visiting Japan later this year. I am a huge Anime fan, and am frustrated by the lack of titles available in Australia. I have an all region DVD player, and a TV that shows NTSC as well as PAL, so I am wondering if there is a way to know if a DVD purchased in Japan will have English subtitles.... can anyone help me??

Check online first2008/8/7 22:25 You can check the subtitles and prices in advance from websites like cdjapan.co.jp or amazon.co.jp that sell Japanese DVDs.

I don't know how the prices are in Australia, but DVDs in Japan are REALLY expensive. You can find used DVDs in great condition from Book Off which is a store selling used DVDs, CDs, books (A LOT of manga), but even used DVDs in Japan are still expensive IMO.

I've bought some anime DVDs from Japan, and I've never seen a TV anime DVD that has had English subtitles. Very popular movies such as anything by Ghibli are likely to have them though.

If you have a region free DVD player, why not try buying anime DVDs from the US. They're almost always subtitled, and the selection is great. There are some online stores, such as dvdpacific.com, that offer reasonable international shipping.by kasasagirate this post as useful

I too watch shows with Japanese subtitles and I find it odd that I can't find the option for Japanese subtitles when I use Disney plus on Roku, especially considering when I was using the Disney plus app on other platforms where Japanese subtitles was an option and I put the subtitles in that language. I'm using Disney plus on Roku and for some reason there's all these other languages available and somehow Japanese isn't listed? e24fc04721
