Users access their global Messages pages from the base navigation bar. Messages are organized by course. Students and instructors can use messages for reminders, quick questions, and social interactions.

Users can send messages to each other, multiple people, or an entire class. Messages activity remains inside the system, and no one has to worry about email addresses that may be incorrect or outdated.

In the Original Course View, instructors can access messages on the Control Panel > Course Tools > Course Messages or from a customized link they add to the course menu. Students can access course messages from the customized link or from the Tools page.

The core functionality of most Slack apps will involve the publication or consumption of messages. In this overview we're going to give you a quick trip through the basics of doing these things, and an introduction to all the terminology that surrounds messaging.

In Slack, messages inhabit conversations. A conversation is a catch all term that covers public channels, private channels, direct message conversations, and group (or multi-party) direct message conversations.

Different conversations will have varying levels of visibility and publishing permission, which is important when you're trying to create messages programmatically, we'll cover this more in our sending messages guide.

These are called ephemeral messages, and in most other respects they're like any other message - composed in the same way, published in much the same way, and viewed within the same types of conversations in Slack.

The only differences are that only one user within that conversation will see them, and that they do not persist across reloads, between desktop and mobile apps, or across sessions. Once the session is closed (for example, the user reloads the app or logs out and back in), ephemeral messages will disappear and cannot be recovered.

Use ephemeral messages when you want to send someone a context-sensitive message that isn't suitable for the wider conversation. For example, if a user invokes one of your app's slash commands that performs some action on a third-party service, an ephemeral message might be the most suitable way to inform that user of the success of the action.

Ephemeral messages should only ever be sent in response to some user action, they must never be unexpected or unsolicited. If you want to send a message to a specific user in any other situation, send them a DM.

Depending on the page size and mailbox data, getting messages from a mailbox can incur multiple requests. The default page size is 10 messages. Use $top to customize the page size, within the range of 1 and 1000.

To improve the operation response time, use $select to specify the exact properties you need; see example 1 below. Fine-tune the values for $select and $top, especially when you must use a larger page size, as returning a page with hundreds of messages each with a full response payload may trigger the gateway timeout (HTTP 504).

To get the next page of messages, simply apply the entire URL returned in @odata.nextLink to the next get-messages request. This URL includes any query parameters you may have specified in the initial request.

Group Chat lets you add or remove members, assign administrators within the group, add avatar and background, and more. A group can have up to 250 participants.

You can create a Group Chat by tapping the Pencil icon.

Creating a new group lets you customize the conversation for that group with a unique background, avatar and name. You can also make this your default setting for all group messages by updating your Group Conversations settings.

Note: If you switch to a messaging app other than Verizon Messages (Message+), you won't be able to access your Group Chats.

Integrated Messaging is a service that works with Verizon Messages (Message+) to let you send and receive text and multimedia messages seamlessly on your smartphone, tablet, or computer using your Verizon mobile number. The service syncs up to 90 days of messages across your devices.

You can use Verizon Messages (Message+) to send and receive messages without the Integrated Messaging service. To use the Verizon Messages (Message+) app without the multi-device sync feature, simply unsubscribe from Integrated Messaging.

However, if you want to access your messages from a device other than your primary phone, like your tablet or computer, then you'll need to subscribe to Integrated Messaging.

To make sure your messages are synced across your devices, we store the messages you keep on your devices for up to 90 days. When you delete a message from one device, we delete it from our servers and also from your other devices. This syncing process may not be instantaneous.

If you no longer want to use Integrated Messaging on any device, then you must unsubscribe from Integrated Messaging to stop it from syncing and storing your messages. Deleting the Verizon Messages (Message+) app from a device or switching to another messaging app, even the default messaging app on the device, won't stop the storage of messages.

Therefore, it must not be used to store or transmit Protected Health Information (PHI) as defined in the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 and the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 and accompanying regulations (collectively "HIPAA"). If you're a Covered Entity or a Business Associate as defined by HIPAA, you must not use Integrated Messaging to store or transmit PHI. If your business is a Covered Entity or Business Associate as defined by HIPAA, or otherwise doesn't want its users to save messages to the cloud, an authorized representative must block Integrated Messaging.

You'll be able to send messages from both your phone and connected device, but not all messages will be synced. You may experience limitations with certain functions, like sent messages, read status and deletions.

For better results with syncing, use Verizon Messages (Message+) on both devices.

Note: Messages start syncing on the day you sign up for Integrated Messaging. Any messages you sent before you signed up for the service won't be synced. The Integrated Messaging service syncs up to 90 days of messages between the web and your iPhone, tablet or other devices. Messages older than 90 days will remain on your phone, but won't be synced to the web.
