every time I get an upgrade of the zoom app, I need to make sure that I go to the virtual backgrounds and "Download Smart Virtual Background package" which is annoying. Since I update zoom programatically (using homebrew), I sometimes get surprised that my virtual background is off when I'm a meeting.

As of writing this, Zoom does not support person/face-detection based virtual background in their Linux-version software. As others have pointed out already, virtual background without green screen is not yet supported by zoom for Linux. There is a feature request for this in the zoom developer forum. Maybe supporting it can help making this feature a priority:

Note: Like virtual backgrounds, users have the ability to change or add a filter while a meeting is underway using a similar process. Click on the upward-facing arrow in the Start (or Stop) Video Camera icon. A menu will appear on your screen.
