every time I get an upgrade of the zoom app, I need to make sure that I go to the virtual backgrounds and "Download Smart Virtual Background package" which is annoying. Since I update zoom programatically (using homebrew), I sometimes get surprised that my virtual background is off when I'm a meeting.

Whenever I go to upload my own custom virtual background, I select the image, and then..nothing happens. I can blur my background, but can't upload any of my own. I tried both the flatpak from the software store, and the .deb package from zooms website.

Most people can use Zoom backgrounds with a computer, running Windows 7 or Windows 10, MacOS, and iOS devices such as the iPad or iPhone. Unfortunately, the virtual backgrounds feature is not supported by Zoom on devices running Android, Linux or Chrome OS.
As of writing this, Zoom does not support person/face-detection based virtual background in their Linux-version software. As others have pointed out already, virtual background without green screen is not yet supported by zoom for Linux. There is a feature request for this in the zoom developer forum. Maybe supporting it can help making this feature a priority:

Note: Like virtual backgrounds, users have the ability to change or add a filter while a meeting is underway using a similar process.
