Because the navigation data are stored on the SD card meaning it has to stay in the vehicle, the card is subject to extreme environmental conditions. In order to ensure that the navigation system keeps functioning correctly, your Navi System will only accept SEAT-approved SD cards. If your original card is lost or damaged, you can obtain a replacement from your local SEAT service partner.

I basically followed some instructions on the seat website to update it, so I removed the (original) SD Card from the car slot, downloaded the new maps, erased the SD Card and extracted the new maps to the sd card.

the picture below shows the version number of the installed map data. as you can see i already did an update 1year+ ago. at that time i downloaded a pack from the vw website and put it on the sd card.
