The diary-like format has always been my favourite thing about this series and THESE ARE MY WORDS is no exception. The diary entries help with bringing the reader back in time and makes Violet seem all the more real.

Week 19 of pastry school was a bit of a weird one. We started out on Tuesday with our croquembouche centerpiece designs, but there was a problem with the Thames water supply in the local area, so school was closed on Wednesday. Friday was a teacher development day, so we only had two days in class.

On Thursday, the school was back in business. We had our projects to present in food science. Jennie and I decide to go with the chocolate wine we worked on in the first week of our experiments and perfect that. This time around, we used the Banyuls wine that Heston calls for in his recipe from The Big Fat Duck Cookbook The Big Fat Duck Cookbook. We also used a port to compare the two.

I know I keep saying this, but ever since we came back from Christmas, pastry school has been flyyyyying by. This is our second to last week of the International Pastry Diploma portion. It included souffls, tarts, an exam and lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

It could be a safe space to document the highs and lows of their school-going experience, where they can celebrate their successes and document the challenges that arise. A school diary can be a safe space for students to express themselves and be heard.

It can also be a place where they can track their progress and development by documenting their milestones, goals, and academic aspirations as they progress through their school years. This way, a school diary can be a consistently and steadily growing document that students write in to record and track the progress of their learning.

When students have a diary on hand, whether physical or digital, they can conveniently record important dates, submission times, or school events on the go as they receive information. With digital diaries, they can also set reminders for when these dates are approaching to give themselves a heads up. This allows them to plan their time better and allows for preparatory time to finish up assignments as per their stipulated deadlines.

A school diary can be a tool to plan your personal timetable. The night before, students can plan for the following day in a detailed manner so that they can mentally prepare yourself for the day better and not have to scramble in the morning to get themselves together.

Using a calendwer in the student diary itself would allow them to plan ahead for study tasks and manage time effectively. Moreover, daily to-do lists for school time and as well as after school can be used as a checklist as they get through the day.

Apart from writing essays and taking examinations, students can also write for better mental health. By journal writing in their school diaries, students have a safe space to express their feelings, reflect, and understand their emotions better as well as gain confidence in their writing skills at the very same time.

Getting students to use a school diary to keep track of their learning, plan their time, help with sticking to deadlines, and journaling about their learning is a valuable skill that will help them in the future when it comes to revising for exams, pursuing higher education, and generally taking responsibility for their own time management.

Greg Heffley talks about how his mother does not like technology and smartphones, and is starting a petition to prevent the town from using electronic devices for a weekend. In the scientific literature, there are many ways to measure ACS behaviour. Several studies used self-reported commuting diaries to assess the commuting time along several days [9,10,11,12], which seems to be time-consuming and require hard effort from the respondents [13]. Time intervals are another option to study ACS. Actually, some studies have used theoretical time intervals before the starting school time and after the ending school time, such as 10 min [14], 15 min [15], 30 min [16], 60 min [17] or even 90 min [18], which may not represent the real commuting times. These studies based their decision to use these theoretical time intervals on previous research. Other studies have used objective measures (i.e., Global Positioning System [GPS] and Geographic Information System [GIS]) to identify the time that students needed for commuting to or from school [9,19,20,21]. Nonetheless, GPS has several limitations, such as low signal strength indoors, its relatively expensive price [22] and poor battery life of devices [23]. On the other hand, many studies used accelerometers to provide information regarding PA intensity and the amount of time spent on ACS [9,19,24,25]. In fact, recent studies have recommended a combination of GPS and accelerometers to assess this active behaviour [26,27].

In line with the previous results, passive commuters reported their commuting times with more precision than active commuters. Nevertheless, to our knowledge, there are no studies that analyse the correlations between self-reported diary times and objective times by active and passive commuters with which to compare the previous results. This difference could be attributed to passive commuters using the same, direct road route every day, unlike the active commuters, who have greater flexibility to travel down one street or another without traffic signal restrictions. In fact, a study found that direct routes appear to be barriers to children taking up active commuting [48]. Moreover, passive travellers go more or less at the same speed every day (they cannot exceed the speed limit established for each road), so they have calculated the time of the trip in advance (except on occasions when there may be traffic jam). In contrast, active commuters can constantly change their travel speed. Finally, passive commuters have fewer distractions that increase their commuting times during the trip than active commuters. These can be friends, neighbours and/or relatives, shop windows and changes in the environment, among others.
