A few years ago, I was approached by the president of La Salle College High School, a Catholic, independent, college preparatory school conducted in the tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle. He had envisioned, and was ready to commission, 4 large icons all unique and somewhat modern. The president sent me full and detailed descriptions of his inspired images, I quickly made out sketches, and upon his approval, got to work on these school and family-themed icons, all of which were intended for his students to connect with and derive inspiration from.

On the first Wednesday in June, we will be having grandparents' day for the Freshmen here at La Salle. I have long been extremely humbled by the generosity of our grandparent community--whether with their time in helping with transportation and in attending events or with the financial resources they have saved over the years. It is not uncommon for a grandparent or even for both sets to contribute to a boy's La Salle education, even at a time when they no longer produce income. One I know well because she has had a dozen grandsons go through here calls it the "Nan Scholarship." I would like to dedicate an icon to that generosity.

I hope you can let your spirit and imagination enter into this scene. Jesus and Mary--the same Jesus and Mary from the Nancy Reilly icon--are visiting with Sts. Joachim and Anne. St. Joachim might be visibly failing, drawn and tired, perhaps sitting in a chair which suggests handles like a wheelchair. The teen Jesus is sitting across from him, showing him something--I'd let your inspiration take over here, a Torah scroll, something he has made, a treat he has brought him. Could be anything a 17-year-old boy would want to show or show off to his grandfather. Behind the two seated male figures are the two standing women, St. Anne and Our Lady.

Jesus is looking intently at St. Joachim. In that sort of half-understanding of reality teenagers can manifest, he senses that Joachim may not be around for much longer. Sts. Joachim and Anne and the Blessed Mother are focused in turn on Jesus. All this echos the glances in traditional Byzantine icons like that of the Trinity. They are impressed and perhaps a little surprised at the adult man he is becoming.

While Jesus and the Blessed Mother would be like the Nancy Reilly icon--maybe Mary a year or two greyer, I would have a special request for the portrayal of St. Anne. I would like her to be truly grandmotherly, entirely grey, and, in a word, plump...a cuddly grandmother. Too often, I think, the saints are portrayed in very sanitized, generic ways. No one is grey, no one is overweight; if they are bald, it is due to tonsure. I would like St. Anne to be depicted in a way that a very average 75-year-old woman who has worked hard her whole life and never put herself first could look at and see herself.

Our newest icon honors our grandparents, by depicting Jesus and his Mother with her parents, Sts. Joachim and Anne, the vigor of the teenaged Jesus contrasted with the frailty of his grandfather, the Family united in concern for its grandfather as well as a dawning appreciation that Jesus is becoming a man capable of giving as well as receiving care.

You mean instead of the ? An interesting idea I think the icons we have currently is taken directly from TL site to sort of tie the two together. I don't have a sentimental attachment to the icons though so I'll bring it up with the other staff.

I like them, have been thinking of a good replacement but haven't come up with any. This is by far the best alternative i seen so far. The concept is good, but it's clear that these are scaled down from a picture format like JPEG and not directly from a vector or icon format. If you look at it some more, im sure you can get them looking great.

Nice, I have to say that looks totally perfect. It's clean, clear and have a good color and contrast. I'm split about the Terran Eagle and Shield. Eagle is a bit big and dark, the Shield is hard to make out anything other than the shape. I think the Eagle is the better choice. Protoss is by far the hardest icon, it's a bit to indistinct and the contrast to the background is to small. I'm guessing you use the fansite-kit images ( ). Really nice progress!

...There's a fansite resource? Actually I just Google'd, haha. Anyway, see if this is any better for brightness. As for Protoss, I agree that it's hard to work with that icon in particular. An alternative would maybe be using the Akilae Tribe emblem (the default Protoss emblem)?

There's too much indentation so I'm starting over. I think we should try to keep the colors as they are in game. Red for Terran and purple for Zerg, with blue for Random. Unfortunately, this leaves us with the dilemma of what to do with the Protoss icon, as yellow on white is just painful.

Okay I spoke to the higher-ups and here's some feedback. We need to use the Protoss race icon, not the shelak tribe thing. The colour should be monochromatic and can be quite a bit darker (compare contrast with the old one + on a coloured background). On a personal note I'm still liking where htis is going :)

OK gonna be serious now. I like the new ideas too, I think I saw some thread on TL ages ago about changing the icons but nothing came off of it. Especially sinnce there were as many oppinions as people. But it does seem like it's about time they get redone. Some ideas for the protoss icon, in GSL they crop the icon a bit on top and bottom. and although they were in colour it might work for us too, to maybe do that. Or possibly to turn the icon 45 to have the long edge be going diagonally.

Using the original color versions. Random icons have been recolored accordingly, as well. For the "true random" icon, there isn't really any source for comparison, so I just used the color from tournaments and darkened it to the same brightness value as the other races. Incidentally, the darker green seems to make the Protoss icon easier to identify than before.

The issue you had was the fact that the Terran race icon is quite a bit wider than it is tall, so I kept things in proportion. Salle's variation is as good as it can get playing outside of proportion, though.Ā

My 2 cents:

I barely see any difference in shape between Salle's and Aisight's Terran and Zerg icons. I think Aisight's P icon () looks much better, although Salles () is easier to recognize for resolutions 18 and bellow. I'd use Aisight's for Picon_large and Salle's for Picon_small.

Random Race Icon

For a long time I've felt purple is bad as the random race color as it's too similar to the Terran blue(). Background color should really be discussed here but It's kind of relevant to the Icon discussion as well. Having purple as random race color forces it's icon to be lighter than it's supposed to be able to differentiate it from the Random-Terran icon. I feel brown() is better suited as the random race color, especially for the icon but also as background color.

@Blueblister I'm pretty sure the Zerg icon is completely unchanged between our versions, and the Protoss 15x15 is unchanged as well. Salle simply laid everything side by side to give a better comparison (Salle's Terran icon is stretched vertically by one pixel). --Aisight 20:37, 25 February 2011 (UTC)

So I just noticed that the old icons are 17x15, haha. I was under the impression before that all the race icons had to be square in size. I guess that means the 17x15 Terran icon I made would be fine? --Aisight 19:09, 2 March 2011 (UTC) e24fc04721
