Chrome DevTools previously offered a setting to show rulers when inspecting elements. It had a pixel ruler at the sides of the view, and boundary lines for each element extending the full view of the page.

Due to security limitations at work, I am not allowed to install Chrome extensions. Chrome has a ruler built in to the developer tools, but I can't figure out how to define start and end points like a ruler would permit.

In the following screenshot, I have inspected mainbar element of this page. You can see the pixel offset from the top-left, but the values aren't shown unfortunately. You can access the five most recently inspected elements in the Console using the variables $0-$4. In this case, I use $0, which is the currently selected one. The offsetLeft and offsetTop will give you the corresponding values that match what you see on the ruler. The Computing metrics panel shows the dimensions, including the padding, border and margin values. In this case, there's no outer values, but you would add those on to the 728x1032 dimension you see if there were.

hey, does anyone know of any reading ruler apps i can use for my mac? preferably one that'd work on the whole computer if that's possible but chrome extensions are fine too. i've had a look around and all the ones i could find either didn't work well or were paid apps. i'd really rather not pay but i can do if that's the only option. thanks!

Update:Tried out Firefox Dev Tools Ruler: But, it doesnt show distance between neighboring elements as shown in above reference image. In order to get that I will have to manually determine exact values as per the ruler and then substract the values of the two neighboring elements.

I was struggling with this today and found that in the details settings in Chrome there is a ruler option under elements. With the ruler displaying, turning this on will show lines extended from the ruler to the element. Each little hash on the ruler is 5px. I was needing distance to the edge, so it was easy to see the difference, but you can easily see the end and beginning of elements to figure out the difference if needed.
