In our conversation, Ruger exuded the confidence of an artist certain of their chosen sound, and unwilling to succumb to external pressures. We caught up with him to discuss his debut album, lessons from touring, and making music that stands the test of time.

I would have gone for Rule The World but people around me tend to call me Ru '' so I went with it. Also looking back at my impact, how far my music and image has gone, it was the best title. On the album cover, the world is wearing an eyepatch that gives you an idea of what the album is all about.

The album will feature British rapper Stefflon Don, Kenyan Afropop band Sauti Sol, Jamaican dancehall DJ Govanna, Jamaican singer Projexx, and music group Jugglerz.

Ruger, the rising star of Jonzing Records, has dropped his debut album, RU The World. The project showcases Ruger's exploration of his native city, Lagos, immersing listeners in its vibrant and dynamic essence.

However, Ruger's inaugural full-length project for 2023, aptly titled RU The World, takes a departure from his conventional style of braggadocio. This album offers a textured and introspective immersion into Ruger's world, allowing listeners to gain a deeper understanding of the artist.

In Ruger's own words, "I believe people will finally grasp a deeper understanding of who I am. Most of the time, I've refrained from discussing certain aspects of my life because I wasn't ready to speak about them. Consequently, I felt misunderstood to some extent. This album allows me to share my thoughts and experiences, offering a comprehensive narrative behind everything I've done and what I'm currently engaged in."

One standout track in the album is the breakout single "Asiwaju," created in collaboration with long-time partner KukBeats, which has amassed over 100 million streams and peaked at #3 on the U.K. Official Afrobeats Chart. Building anticipation for RU The World, early releases like "Jonzing Boy" and "Kristy" have garnered global attention and support from radio stations such as 1Xtra, Capital Xtra, Kiss Fresh, and more.

Preceding his album was an extensive 15-city North American album tour with the first show in Boston. Before this, the artist also toured and performed in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Rome, Brescia, Oslo, Dublin, Ireland and Canada, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg, Montreal, and Edmonton.

As much as the album sounds good and exploratory, many would agree that only about 7 out of 17 songs stood out on the album. And most of these 7 songs do not seem exactly like they will

grow to become a continental hit (a global hit would be a fetch). It also seem as though the songs were not properly curated and well put together as regards the flow and overall storytelling the

album should project.

As much as most listeners will choose to count the album as a project that was made just to demonstrate how pleasure driven the artiste is, I think it is also very critical to mention that Hedonism is an art and it can be considered as the face of Ru The World album.

The album is a proper example of harmony and great sequencing, making for fluid listening, even with its unceasing sexual frankness, often vulgar, often genuinely innovative.

Most artistes with broad sonic palettes and versatility usually come across the challenge of fusing all multiple spheres of their musicality into a single body of work, that sufficiently showcases them without

one facet outshining the other. Ruger on the other hand, triumphs over this challenge and it results in one of the best debut albums of recent times.

The album features British rapper Stefflon Don, Kenyan Afropop band Sauti Sol, Jamaican dancehall DJ Govana, Jamaican singer Projexx, and music group Jugglerz.

In Rugers words, he states, "I believe people will finally grasp a deeper understanding of who I am. Most of the time, I've refrained from discussing certain aspects of my life because I wasn't ready to speak about them. Consequently, I felt misunderstood to some extent. This album allows me to share my thoughts and experiences, offering a comprehensive narrative behind everything I've done and what I'm currently engaged in. There are many things I've held back, and now, I've let them out through this album."

I think Dear Ex was challenging to put out there because, like, there are a lot of things I would have stopped myself from saying previously, but on this album, I said, fuck it let me just say my piece and express myself. I know that some of them will come for me, but that was a song I wanted to put out, but definitely, that was the hardest to write.
