Suddenly, after an arid year 2020, things are happening at a dizzying pace for Albuquerque amateur boxer Sharahya-Taina Moreu. Of the most interest: Yoruba Moreu, his daughter's coach, said she has been elevated to USA Boxing's Olympic-qualification alternate position at 152 pounds. Sharahya-Taina got that news while in Big Bear, California, where she's been in camp with legendary pro Cecilia Braekhus, helping Braekhus prepare for her March 13 rematch against Jessica McCaskill. Once his daughter returns from California, Yoruba Moreu said, he'll drive her to Colorado, where she's scheduled to spar with WBO junior lightweight champion Mikaela Mayer. Then it's on to USA Boxing nationals (postponed from December), scheduled for March 25-April 3 in Shreveport, Louisiana. From there, she'll report to the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, California. "It's been a roller coaster," Yoruba Moreu said, "like, she has some momentum all of a sudden." Sharahya-Taina had been ranked No. 3 by USA Boxing at 152 pounds but was elevated to the No. 2 spot after Wisconsin's Briana Che, for reasons unknown, was removed from the picture. Ohioan Oshae Jones, the Olympic Trials champion, remains USA Boxing's 152-pound representative to the North America-South America Olympic qualifying tournament, scheduled for May in Buenos Aires. No U.S. boxer has yet qualified for the Olympics themselves. "I hope (Jones) goes to the Olympics, because she deserves it," Yoruba Moreu said. "She won the Trials, so I think it's fair that she goes. "But if something happens, she gets injured or she gets COVID, we'd be more than happy to step up to the plate." The opportunity in Big Bear came about when Yoruba Moreu got a phone call from Tom Loeffler, Braekhus' manager. "They just gave us a call and said, 'Hey, we want your daughter in camp, can you fly out tomorrow?'" The elder Moreu was unable to get out of work, but Sharahya-Taina made the trip. Now, her father said, "They liked her so much that she's really part of everything. ... The way she throws punches, the way she throws her hooks are really similar to (McCaskill), and they just love her in camp right now." He believes the interest being shown his daughter by the pros is not lost on USA Boxing. "They want her for 2024 (if not 2020)," he said. Sharayha-Taina will be 25 in 2024, but has said in the past the Olympics are a treasured goal. Yoruba Moreu said his daughter's status as Olympic-qualifying alternate is independent of how she performs at nationals, adding that she could skip nationals if they both felt that was the best path. But given that Sharahya-Taina hasn't fought since December 2019, due to the COVID-19 shutdown, he said she simply needs the work, "Just in case she does get that No. 1 spot." HOLM STAYING HOME: Albuquerque MMA fighter Holly Holm will not provide analysis as previously announced for Friday's world championship boxing match in Flint, Michigan between Claressa Shields and Canada's Marie-Eve Dicaire, Holm's Albuquerque promoter said. Lenny Fresquez said Holm has opted to stay home and take care of a nagging physical problem. He declined to specify the nature of the problem but said Holm's scheduled May 8 fight against Julianna Pea will not be affected. It might have been, he said, had Holm not chosen to address it now. Shields (10-0, two knockouts), a Flint native, and Holm became friends while Shields trained in Albuquerque at Jackson-Wink MMA for an eventual crossover career. As a boxer from 2002-13, Holm compiled a record of 33-2-3 with nine KOs and won an assortment of world titles. Shields is a top-heavy favorite to defeat Dicaire (17-0, no KOs). PEREZ TOO: The Braekhus-McCaskill rematch is on the March 13 Matchroom Boxing card in Dallas that also features Albuquerque junior lightweight Aaron Angel Perez (10-0, six knockouts). He's matched against Raymond Ford (8-0, four KOs) of Camden, New Jersey in an eight-round bout. Braekhus (36-1, nine KOs) lost for the first time in her career when McCaskill (9-2, three KOs) defeated her by majority decision in August. The Norwegian fighter will seek to regain the undisputed welterweight title. The March 13 main event matches Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (50-2, 41 KOs) and Juan Francisco Estrada (41-3, 28 KOs) in a super flyweight title-unification bout.

Yesterday was a bad day, today was a good day. Who knows what will happen tomorrow, but one day the roller coaster will come to an end. My goal is remission, and when I finally reach it all the ups and downs will have been worth the ride.

The most afraid I have been in my life is the two incidents when there was a real chance I could lose either of my parents. And that one time I was halfway through a daredevil roller coaster ride and promising Jesus I would never try it again if the ride ended without drama.

The blue horizon of higher ground is covered in rocky woodland and bushy scrub. The occasional worker in the fields, termite mounds and strange trees attract my attention as I take all this in. Some trees have the look of a baobab, cartoon-like with bunches of leaves on the end of fat branches and even fatter trunks. There are cattle egrets, rollers and kestrels, swallows and swifts, and I imagine the leopard, caracal or jackal that may be lurking in the distant rocky outcrops, staying out of site until the end of the day.

Jagun Jagun is an emotional roller coaster. There is suffering and solace, bloodshed and heartbreak. So many characters have someone they love taken from them by violent force. (In the first five minutes, a prince is shot dead in front of his family.) Jagun Jagun does not turn away from this consequence of conflict and the quest for power, but rather leans into its devastation.
