i agree the ring tones should be allowed on the text messages like they used to. I have contacts assigned so a text or call are the same sound so I know who it is and I'm a nurse so all the doctors are assigned a special sound (ring or text) so when covered in isolation gear I know if it's important enough to leave the room to check it or not!!! Plus when I'm on call the longer phone call tones used as a text sound help make sure it wakes me for emergencies!!! I see NO reason to stop us from having that choice like we used to have in all the other iOS. PLEASE RETURN THIS FUNCTION!!!

I just downloaded OS17 onto my iphone 13 Pro Max. It wiped out all my custom ringtones, and Text tones. So I decided to purchase one text tone from the Itunes store. It downloaded the Text tone to my phone, however it dowloaed a Text Tone to the ringtone list. I cannot access Text Tones from the ringtone list on OS17. The itunes store put the Text Tone in the Ringtone list. You were able to do this in previous OS versions. Can you do an update to fix this hiccup?

I took your advice and reported it to Apple. Hope it gets fixed, because it's a pain in the ***! I guess until then, no customizing already set textones or contact sounds, unless it's a ringtone. So stupid. So inaccessible. I count on my phone making certain noises to indicate certain people and events. And I like custom tones, because it sets them apart from everyone else who has an iphone!

Apparently this isn't a bug but done purposely, the only text tones (affects new voicemail, new mail, sent mail, calendar & reminders) you can now use are purchased ones which are their bought ones but not your own free ones however custom ones as noted by others are only visible to ringtones. Apple being Apple have also reduced the volume of text tones (something to do with EU something or other - there are articles on this on the web and many complaining) so there is no bug and not likely to be a fix as it seems a decision has been taken to do just this. Apple like to dictate how you use their products now seemingly how loud your text tones are, to me it's the final straw and another reason now to go to Android. Pointless raising issues and wasting your time sending feedback they pay no attention to it so you either put up & shut up or jump ship.

I'm having the same problem and when I click on "Download All Purchased Tones" they won't download again. When I go to the iTunes Store I see the ringtones but now I have to RE-purchase them. I'm really hoping this is just a glitch with iOS 17.0.1 because I just purchased these ringtones a couple of days ago and Mama ain't happy!

Seems like a huge step back that users can no longer use purchased or custom tones for anything else but ringtones, and if custom contact ringtones and textones are used, they still work as they should, but the user cannot change them, except to the newer crappy tones, or the classic ones. Very disappointing indeed. Almost worthy of a downgrade.

I would find being forced to use paid tones again annoying, but that isn't even the case. It's not that I can't use just custom tones, but even purchased tones don't appear in the list of tones one can use for things like textone, reminder alerts, calendar alerts, etc. For every other instance but strictly ringtones, I'm limited to the new tones and the classic, with no options for my purchased tones or my custom tones. Of course there's a button to go to the tone store, but nothing else.

Open System Preferences and select Notifications > Messages, then turn off Allow Notifications. You can also prevent text messages from appearing on your Mac by removing it from your Apple ID, or not connecting it in the first place.

The ringtones on this website are in .mp3 format and is compatible with almost all mobile phones. Download ringtones and use them on Nokia Mobile phones, Samsung, Sony Ericsson phones, LG mobiles, Motorola phones etc...

I found a ghetto work-around for group ringtones on the iPhone. It's sort of annoying but once you get it set up, its easy to then change a group ringtone. You have to set the ringtone for each one of your contacts, but only ONCE, and then changing the ringtone for a group is easy. You won't want to do this unless you enjoy changing your ringtones every so often.

1. Create a custom ringtone for each group you want to set, and give it a default name that you recognize (ie "AA_Family" "AA_Friends" "AA_Work" etc). I put the "AA_" in front so it shows at the top of my ringtones list on the iPhone.

The iPhone knows that song you are playing regardless of the filename of your ringtone. As long as you don't have conflicts, you'll be alright. Hopefully this isn't too confusing. I tried to be clear without typing out a novel. Again, this is really only helpful if you enjoy changing out your group ringtones often like I do.

Hello!

Last night I upgraded to iOS 17 on my iPhone 14 Pro.

Everything works smoothly for now except I can't set the custom message tones in the Sound and Vibration settings. I see the new ones just as the old ones under "Classic" but there are no my custom made tones I have been using for the last eleven years.

Does anyone experienced the same problem and what would be the solution for it?

TIA

There is currently no way to use custom tones with the new iOS unless you either use ringtones for phone calls or alarms. I have a lot of files on my device too and now the shorter ones are useless on there. I'm in the same boat and have been doing this for 11 years.

No word from Apple really about the drop of custom text tones but lots of people apparently don't like the new default notification Rebound sound. You still can't change the sounds for apps in iOS 17, and many apps don't have their own tones. -17-iphone-app-notification-sound/

Yes I am seeing this on my iPhone 12. Miss my reflection email tone and the Apex voicemail tone. There are also new ringtones I would like to set for reminder and text alerts. . I really hope they fix this soon. I am subscribed to public beta updates. :)

Hi,

I want to hear ringtones for calls but only vibrating for messages etc.

(Because i dont like to miss calls, and vibrating is a nice deal between nothing and beeping)

On samsung devices you have since years different volume bars for that and i thought it would be a general android feature.

( its something you cant do on iOS at all)

Learn how to change the sound that you hear when you get a call, text, email, or other notification on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Choose from a variety of built-in sounds or buy ringtones from the iTunes Store.

Did you make a custom ringtone with a voice memo by using GarageBand? Do you know of another approach for converting voice memos into ringtones or text tones for iPhone? Let us know your experiences and thoughts in the comments.

In iOS 17, Apple is overhauling its entire offering of ringtones and text tones, debuting more than 20 new sounds that can be used for phone calls, texts, alarms, and more. Almost all of the Ringtones listed in the Sounds & Haptics menu are new, so there are plenty of options to choose from.

The new ringtones include Arpeggio, Breaking, Canopy, Chalet, Chirp, Daybreak, Departure, Dollop, Journey, Kettle, Mercury, Milky Way, Quad, Radial, Scavenger, Seedling, Shelter, Sprinkles, Steps, Storytime, Tease, Tilt, Unfold, and Valley. Reflection continues to be the default ringtone option.

Compared to the old ringtones, many of the new ringtones are longer in length and sound more modern. Apple has moved all of the prior ringtones to the "Classic" section so they are still accessible for those who prefer options like Illuminate, Night Owl, Constellation, and Twinkle.

Apple has also introduced more than 10 new Text Tones that can be used for incoming text messages. The Text Tones also replace the prior options, with those older sounds moved to the Classic interface. The updated Text Tones can be used for New Voicemail, New Mail, Sent Mail, Calendar Alerts, and Reminder Alerts in addition to texts.

iPhone notifications are customizable for some apps, but there are notable exceptions. Customized ringtones and notification sounds help users easily identify a call or notification they receive on their phone. For example, using a different notification tone for Messages and Mail helps users identify which app they've received an alert from without even looking at their phone.

On iPhone, a user can customize notification sounds like text message tones, calendar alarms, and voicemail alerts. Users can also change notification tones for Apple-specific apps like FaceTime and Mail. However, users can't choose custom notification sounds for most third-party apps, which means the default notification sound is the only option they have for non-Apple apps. Most third-party apps just use the iPhone's default alert tone, while some have their own tones built into the apps. Users can, however, turn their notification sound on or off for third-party apps as needed.

To set a custom notification sound, go to Settings and tap on 'Sound & Haptics.' Under 'Sounds and Vibration Patterns,' select the type of notification that needs to be changed. From the menu, choose the sound that needs to be set as the notification sound. Once an option is chosen, users will see a blue check mark next to it. This method enables users to customize ringtones for incoming calls, as well as notification sounds for texts, voicemails, emails, calendar alerts, reminders, and more. Users can also tap on 'Tone Store' to buy a ringtone and use that instead of the available options.

iPhone users can also change text message tones and ringtones for specific contacts. To do this, open the Contacts app and select a contact from the list. Tap on 'Edit' in the top right corner, and then tap 'Ringtone' or 'Text Tone' to change the tone from the available options. 17dc91bb1f
