Luckily there is a way to mute ringtones but keep the call notification around. This means your iPhone will ring, but other devices will stay silent and just show you the incoming call, giving you an option to answer them or hang up right there.

For some reason, there is no way to disable sound for call notifications on iOS and iPadOS, although there is a workaround: you can create a silent ringtone using GarageBand or you can buy one from the iTunes Store (buying will also make it available for your other iOS devices).

In Settings -> Sounds, you can choose your own ringtone, text tone, and alert sounds for voicemail and system apps like mail and calendar alerts. But these options do not influence the sounds of alerts from third-party apps. As of iOS 17.0, the Settings app simply offers no controls to change the sounds that third-party apps make.

Today, dials have given way to touchpads and rings have been ousted by ringtones. But I don't want to get all nostalgic. After all, your old phone couldn't ring the NOVA theme song, could it? I didn't think so! Now, at long last, your cell phone can ring with the sweet sounds of NOVA.

Being from the old beige-box generation, I was shocked to discover that ringtones are big business, estimated to bring in between half a billion and a billion dollars each year. (The total seems to be shrinking as consumers learn to make their own ringtones.)

Here come more ringtones! I had a busy spring and summer! I traveled to Norway twice, traveled to the midwest to visit family and I did this while continuing to write new music and create more ringtones, plus run my consulting business. On top of that, I play in the Evergreen Community Orchestra. So now I am playing catch up with my web site. I had created the ringtones for my Opus 3 in the Bluesy Bach series a few months ago, but forgot to post them until now.

I don't think it was a conscious decision of mine to set my ringtone at the 'traditional old fashioned phone ring' available. I went through the usual pattern of listening to all options (about 3 times) and then decided to settle on that particular one. And yes, when on a train, when the tone fires - at least 10 people in close proximity start padding at their pockets or digging around their bags.

A client of mine told me a story just yesterday about one of his fellow Partners whose ringtone is set, at the loudest possible volume, to the wondrous 'Scotland the Brave'. I asked if he was Scottish (tying in with my personal branding theory) and if this was a demonstration of his patriotism - but no, he's not Scottish, but he is a bit of a technophobe and it's like he can't figure out how to a) change the theme and b) lower the volume!

The explosion of the ringtone industry is clearly testament to the popularity of users being able to select personal ringtones, which would suggest that users are looking for a ringtone which fits with who they are, or at least sets out to make an impression.

Personally, I can't help to build a picture about a person when I hear their ringtone. If I ran a survey asking 'what is your ringtone' - I think I would build a picture of the owner - which rightly or wrongly would give me a perception of their personality. Perhaps it's a question we should build into interview techniques.

So if concerned about your 'personal brand' and the impression you create - then perhaps consider your ringtone. Create an extension of yourself - what you want to convey. Remember, all sorts of people will hear it - so what message do you want to portray... ff782bc1db
