Reading Eggs is a (subscription-only, although there is a trial) Australian tool for 4-7 year olds that sets out to engage children in readings, from playing games in the online playroom to moving through phonics to phrases and sentences. Children, led by an engaging wee ant called Sam, move their self-designed avatar around a map, completing lessons on the way, earning prizes and animals.

Nice review. Reading eggs is a super program. Both my girls have been using it for the last 6 months. They love it and have learned so much. Their reading and comprehension skills have come along in leaps and bounds

Understand the science of reading and how Reading Eggs can help deliver an instructional support oriented around the five pillars of reading.

The purpose of the present action research study is to examine the effects of a technology based reading intervention program titled Reading Eggs on a small rural Title I elementary school. The identified problem of practice involves students reading below grade level by third grade, which is an indicator of future academic problems for students. To address this problem, Fairfield Magnet School for Math and Science (FMSMS) has implemented the use of Reading Eggs to supplement instruction. Reading Eggs is a web based literacy program in which modules and automated videos teach students skills to build reading comprehension, fluency, spelling, vocabulary, and a range of writing skills. This program uses a pre- assessment to differentiate instruction and provide students with individualized learning paths. In this action research study, qualitative methods will be used to examine the effects of this program on reading achievement in first and second grades. The Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System 1 is used to determine academic growth throughout the study. Classes have been randomly selected as the targeted population. The data from the targeted population has been compared to the data of the classes not using the Reading Eggs Program. The results reveal that the Reading Egg used as a supplement was effective in improving reading proficiency scores. As a result, the Reading Eggs Program will be implemented as a supplemental program into the kindergarten and first grade classes at FMSMS.

Couple this with the long Summer holidays where there is no formal reading plan I was worried that when he went back to school he may go backwards. Then he would be demotivated just like I was. I was on the hunt for something that put the fun back into reading, in a medium he enjoys and that could be used over the school holidays, either by himself or with me helping him. Thats when Reading Eggs got in touch so we have been trying out their programme.

I can highly recommend reading Eggs, I first tried it with my now 8 year old when I had the free trial, I ended up signing him up for it for the year, then when my little girl turned 3, I signed her up for it as well, and I honestly believe that its helped them get further ahead in reading than their peers!

We have used Reading Eggs as a family for over 4 years now and I can honestly say with confidence that the Reading Eggs programme has helped my eldest daughter in particular, improve in terms of her reading ability and confidence.

Reading Eggs covers 5 essential elements of reading including phonics awareness, phonics instruction, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension, helping children to learn how to read with confidence and develop an enthusiasm for learning.

With fun maps to follow, golden eggs and certificates to earn and even activity sheets to print off to practice skills after the lesson, children can progress at their own pace in a safe, ad free environment.

Lessons start by navigating their personalised character across a level on map. Each map has 10 lessons which include elements such as picture match (dragging words to match pictures), writing letters, clicking on pictures that begin with a certain letter or sound, blending words and sounds together and reading books aloud.

In this section, children who have already learned to read can build up key literacy skills and reading comprehension with both fiction and non fiction texts, practising their reading and answering questions around what they have read. Not only is this a great way to enhance their ability to retrieve information from the text but also use inferences and expand their vocabulary.

As with the rest of the Reading Eggs programme, the more children engage with the lessons, the more rewards they earn. In Reading Eggspress, the golden eggs allow them to buy items such as clothing for their avatar, decorations for a virtual house and even virtual pets.

Hi,

There is a living social deal running for half price reading eggs subscription at the moment. Just wondered if it might be worth doing with my 4yr old dd2? She is in reception and just getting to grips with reading, knows single letter sounds and can read most straightforward 2 and 3 letter words, struggles with words with vowel combinations, which she probably hasn't been taught yet. Is the website fun and engaging for a standard ability 4 year old? I just want something to reinforce her learning and she seems more keen to use the computer than sit down with books....Any opinions gratefully received. Thanks

Hi

My dd (also four)has had Reading Eggs for a year or so - she goes in fits and starts with it to be honest - so at some points it has been an every day must, and at other points she gets bored.

That said. Dd hasn't started Reception yet (will in two weeks) but the attached nursery informs me in her school report that she has made "exceptional progress" with reading and has been "remarkably" well-prepared. I would love to take the credit, but fear that this is almost entirely the fault of Sam the Ant and his Reading Eggs friends!

DD1 has had reading eggs now for a cuple of years. She is making good progress. although, like sleepingbunnys DD, she has fits and starts. You may find that, if she has a burst of learning during some time off from reading eggs, you may have to sit there and run through some of the lessons yourself, to "catch up" with DD.

Overall though, very good.

Major hands up for reading eggs - Have tried a few inc headsprout and this is much more fun and offers more variety - the new reading express is for 7-13 yr olds and is again is more fun and varied than the Headsprout comprehension (7-13) that my 9 yr old and 13yr old have tried

We're using Reading Eggs (among other things) to help DS (age 4) with his reading. He finds it a lot of fun. My main issue with it is he has a fair amount of reading knowledge already but not enough to get through their initial reading test so it's made him start from scratch and most of what he's doing is repetition. Not a bad thing in itself but it's annoying I can't unlock the more advanced lessons for him.

My home ed girls use reading eggs and love it and are doing really well, started on the lower level one and now moved on to reading eggspress. They are 6.5yrs old. We did the 14 days free trial, then waited a while and they sent us an email offering a months free and now we've joined for a year. I think it's great.

Reading Eggs is an online reading program that includes a wealth of resources. Whether you want to read a "big book" to the class, have students work on individualized lessons tailored to their needs, or do a class lesson on grammar and phonics, Reading Eggs has you covered. A teacher could easily use Reading Eggs as the primary language arts curriculum. Teachers could use the site as part of their reading program, exploring the treasure trove of resources and games to support their current instruction. Teachers can also direct struggling readers to use Reading Eggs as an at-home practice. Note that there's a robust teacher dashboard to let teachers keep track of student progress and create assignments.

Reading Eggs is a comprehensive phonics and reading program for children ages 3 to 13, available on the web or as an iOS or Android app. There are four programs, each with a different focus and target age range: Reading Eggs, Fast Phonics, Reading Eggspress, and Mathseeds. New student users can take a placement test to find the right starting place for them, or start each program from the beginning. Students complete activities and games at their current level, or work on activities the teacher has assigned them (or the class). There are songs, books, and games. Though the majority of the material covers all things reading, the Mathseeds section focuses on basic foundational math skills.

Teachers could conceivably rely on this program all year round to support reading instruction because of the comprehensiveness and teacher tools. It falters a bit in its design and creativity, which sometimes feel a bit outdated. Younger students may not necessarily care, but older students may find Reading Eggs a bit stale.

This is a great tool, particularly for young learners. My youngest learner loves using the program and is flying through the levels. I am seeing a huge improvement in the way he responds to the lessons on screen and verbalises the responses as he moves through the levels. The underlying egg earning encourages him to complete more levels. My older learner is fixated on the egg earning and has come up with ways to work around this as eggs are harder to achieve at the higher levels it has forced her to looks for ways to attain access to games and furnishings without putting in the level of work the game requires. I think the game may need to do some work in the area as it is discouraging for older players since the items they want are expensive compared to their earning capability when compared to the younger childrens version. 2351a5e196
