R. Kelly is the eponymously-titled second studio album by American R&B singer-songwriter R. Kelly. It was released on November 14, 1995, by Jive Records. The production was handled entirely by Kelly himself.[citation needed] It spawned three number one R&B singles: "You Remind Me of Something", "Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)" and "I Can't Sleep Baby (If I)".

In 1996, songs from this album were featured several times in the first season of the UPN sitcom Moesha. "Hump Bounce" featured in the third episode, "Down Low (Nobody Has to Know)" was featured in the tenth episode and "You Remind Me of Something" can be heard and was referenced in the fifth episode.

'My December', one of my favorite Kelly Clarkson albums, is celebrating its 15th anniversary today. However, due to the place it holds within Kelly Clarkson's discography as the "forgotten album", I thought it would be a good idea to discuss the controversies surrounding the release of this album, the effect it had on Kelly's musical progression and career, how the album signaled the decline of the pop rock/power pop sound in the mainstream during the late '00s, and whether or not the album still holds up today in 2022.

Before we can even talk about 'My December' of course, we have to talk about how massive 'Breakaway' was. Released in 2004, the album is still currently the 18th best-selling album of the 21st century, with 12 million copies sold worldwide and containing hits like 'Since U Been Gone', 'Behind These Hazel Eyes', 'Because of You', 'Walk Away', and 'Breakaway'. The album marked a shift from her more R&B/adult contemporary-styled debut album 'Thankful' towards a more developed rock sound, but still maintained the versatility and pop sensibility of her first album. It was also acclaimed for having a little something for everybody". The album is widely credited for establishing her commercial appeal beyond American Idol, and helped legitimize the popularity of singing shows like American Idol and The Voice.

However, when she submitted the album to RCA in early 2007, reports of the album's "radical departure" and Clive Davis' dissatisfaction with it began to percolate the media. Due to the continued decline of the record industry in 2007 and the diminishing power of major record companies, Clive and RCA wanted another album filled with hits like 'Breakaway' in order to make more profit. Kelly, however, refused to compromise on this album after compromising on her last couple of albums, stating how she didn't want to be a puppet. Eventually, Clive relented, but with reluctance and derision, even going as far as publicly ridiculing her and the album at an international record company meeting, and refusing to promote the album on American Idol's season 6 finale despite promoting new projects by the other former Idol contestants.

After being finally released in June 2007, the album received generally positive reviews, with many reviewers noting the angstier and heavier rock sound as well as the lack of hit songs, but praising its artistic integrity and rawer sound. The album was also described as the most logical progression in her career rather than a "radical departure", managing to incorporate pop rock, pop punk, alternative rock, hard rock, soul, R&B, and folk into its sound while remaining a sonically cohesive unit and telling a story from start to finish.

As we all know, with the late '00s releases from Lady Gaga, Britney Spears, and Rihanna, dance-pop and electropop began to take over the mainstream in 2007, with the pop rock/pop punk sound starting to lose its popularity in favor of indie rock acts such as Arcade Fire, Modest Mouse, and Death Cab for Cutie. The commercial underperformance of 'My December' in 2007 preceded other underperforming pop rock/pop punk albums such as Avril Lavigne's 'Goodbye Lullaby', Green Day's '21st Century Breakdown', Blink-182's 'Neighborhoods', and Evanescence's self-titled third studio album, signaling a decline in the sound's popularity from the mainstream. To avoid a continued decline, Kelly decided to utilize more contemporary trends during the recording of 'All I Ever Wanted'.

While her work from 2009-2015 was a return to a primarily mainstream pop rock sound, it was notably infused with a more prominent electronic sound that was closer to dance-pop than pop rock, as exemplified on hits like 'My Life Would Suck Without You' and 'Stronger'. Eventually, Kelly even released a full-on synthpop/dance-pop album in 2015's 'Piece by Piece'. By incorporating mainstream trends of the time into her music, Kelly was able to sustain her popularity into the 2010s, with 'Stronger' being certified 7x platinum and the parent album becoming her third best-selling effort behind 'Breakaway' and 'Thankful'. However, the success of her 2009-2015 albums cemented 'My December' as the clear outlier in her discography, as it was the only album up to that point in her career that had no memorable hits or chart longevity.

With recent pop punk/emo pop projects released by Willow, Machine Gun Kelly, and Meet Me @ the Altar, as well as projects by Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Halsey, and The Kid Laroi that are also influenced by '00s power pop/pop rock, there seems to have been a commercial resurgence in the sound fueled by '00s nostalgia. Though this has largely revived interest in Kelly's 'Breakaway' album, I'd argue that the 'My December' album holds up even better than its predecessor.

Songs from the album, such as 'Never Again', 'Hole', and 'Haunted', fit right into the '00s pop rock sound that people are nostalgic for right now, and wouldn't feel out of place on Halsey's 'If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power' album and Rina Sawayama's self-titled debut album, with Rina even citing Kelly as an influence on her upcoming album 'Hold the Girl'. On the other hand, the slower songs like 'Sober', 'Be Still', 'Maybe', and 'Irvine' hold up much better than the adult contemporary ballads from 'Breakaway', as the radio format has been largely replaced by adult top 40 instead. Due to their folk, blues, and acoustic influences, these songs managed to maintain a timeless quality that could fit very comfortably alongside more recent songs like Post Malone's 'Lemon Tree', Billie Eilish's 'Happier Than Ever', Olivia Rodrigo's 'Hope Ur Ok', and even songs from Kelly's own 'Kellyoke' EP (e.g. her own renditions of 'Happier Than Ever' and Radiohead's 'Fake Plastic Trees'). Additionally, 'My December' is arguably her most personal album, with songs like 'Sober' and 'Irvine' revealing her emotional state at the time and 'Be Still' reflecting on her physical well-being.

Although the album is less polished compared to her other albums and might be a little inaccessible at first due to the lack of radio hits, this is the definitive Kelly Clarkson album to listen to. While Kelly Clarkson's versatile voice has always been the centerpiece of her music, with her eighth studio album 'Meaning of Life' arguably being the best showcase of her vocal dexterity, 'My December' pairs that vocal ability with the songwriting chops first heard on 'Because of You'.

To those of you who have listened to 'My December', let me know your thoughts on this album/album cycle, and whether or not you think Kelly will make an album like this again. To those of you who haven't listened to it, I highly recommend you to give it a chance!

In 2022, Clarkson graced fans with an immensely successful EP of her most jaw-dropping Kellyoke covers, but the excitement didn't end there: Clarkson also begun working on a new album of original hits. On a hilarious New Year's Eve-themed Instagram Live for The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson chatted with producers about some of her predictions for 2023.

That's when Clarkson announced she had a new album in the works, with fans thrilled to see new music from the mythic singer. Naturally, Clarkson didn't leave room for disappointment with her tenth studio release. Here's everything to know about Clarkson's explosive 2023 album, Chemistry.

After seeing the immense success of Chemistry, Clarkson upped the ante by taking her new album to the Las Vegas strip. In the summer of 2023, Clarkson performed a 10-night residency in Las Vegas titled "Chemistry: An Intimate Evening with Kelly Clarkson." Clarkson performed a delightful combination of cherished hits and Chemistry tracks, delivering more energizing performances to her frenzied fanbase.

Other than her 2021 holiday album, \"When Christmas Comes Around,\" and her 2022 \"Kellyoke\" EP, Kelly Clarkson hasn't put out a regular album of all-new material since 2017's \"The Meaning of Life.\"

\"I have an album coming out this year -- I swear! I know I've been talking about it ... and there's a really cool way we're releasing it that we're formulating right now,\" she said during an Instagram Live session posted on \"The Kelly Clarkson Show\" YouTube channel.

\"It took a minute for me to be able to release this album because I just had to be over it, through it, all around it,\" she said, possibly alluding to her divorce from former husband Brandon Blackstock.

\"I'm glad I took the minute because ... one of the last songs written for the album might be one of the singles that we come out with ... it's really cool,\" she explained. \"And it's a great arc of, like, a whole relationship. So it's not all sad or mad, but that's in there. And it's coming out. I swear it's coming out.\"

With the humanities becoming progressively more open to interdisciplinary studies, there exists a space for music to be part of the discourse surrounding literature. One of the most important developments for music was the rise of the concept album, a medium where the individual tracks are defined by a larger theme or a unifying narrative. The concept album first emerged in the 1960s and became a method for musicians to experiment with expanded storylines and lyrical motifs that overthrew classical models of music albums.
