If the end of the last paragraph was intimidating, I have done my job. You should be a little intimidated. I never recommend the series to anyone, not because it is bad, but due to its size and scope. Reading Malazan is not for the faint of heart and I often see fans psyche up their friends to read the first book, Gardens of the Moon, only to watch their friends bounce off Gardens like hitting a concrete wall at full sprint. I prefer to wait for people to find the series on their own, develop their own desire to read it, and then encourage and coax them as they read the first book. But why do people bounce off?

When readers become aware of plot holes, it jerks them from that fictional dream. It ruins the magic of the story and makes them realize the book in front of them is indeed fiction and not real. The plot hole becomes a distraction, and the reader may even begin to look more critically at your novel and try to find more inconsistencies instead of just enjoying the story.

This thinking comes from the misconception that flat characters always = bad, and round (well-developed) characters always = good. Therefore, if you make all the characters in your novel round, it will be even better!

You need BOTH round and flat characters in your novel. Why? Every character has a role to play in the story, just like actors in a play. Some roles are big (aka leading roles). Some roles are small with only a few lines. And some roles may not even have a speaking part at all!

Enter a fantastical South African world where mythology and technology converge. This genre-defying novel takes readers on a thrilling ride with a rich cast each on their own journey of empowerment. Fluid identities, extraordinary powers, and battles for acceptance create a vibrant tapestry in this unforgettable tale.

A Streetcar Named Desire is a play I am teaching this year. Its influence in post-war literature made this a key choice in my curriculum. The power of this play stems from the collisions between the fantasy and reality of desire, centred on a failed Southern Belle Blanche DuBois. With desire operating as the search for personal fulfillment, and not always spiritual, Williams presents wider and desperate realities for a post-war audience through a very specific room in 1940s New-Orleans.

A moth is not a butterfly. It is weak and lonely and decrepit. Her moth-like nature belies the intensity, albeit self-destructive, of her desire. And like a moth she will be attracted to the light of desire to the point of incarceration in an asylum. While her desires are seen as base and physical by the men who are challenged by her, the beauty and elegance of her discourse is a different kind of intellectual light in world of brutal reality. No-one speaks as beautifully as Blanch in the play and Stanley is embarrassed by his coarseness as much as he defends it.

If you want to read a book that is geared towards an older audience that has the themes of race and police brutality, I would recommend Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid, the Goodreads Choice Awards winner for best debut novel of 2020. This book follows Emira who is very uncertain about her future, but sure of her love for Brair, the child she babysits. Their love for one another is heartwarming, but the rest of the story is very serious as it deals with the microaggressions people of color face in this country, the broken systems currently in place, and the complexities of trying to live life with this as your reality.

Poets & Writers Live is an initiative developed in response to interviews and discussions with writers from all over the country. When we asked what Poets & Writers could do to support their writing practice, time and again writers expressed a desire for a more tangible connection to other writers. So, we came up with a living, breathing version of what Poets & Writers already offers: Poets & Writers Live.

Unbreaking will probably come out next year. The book starts in 2018, but immediately leaves this universe, so the date becomes irrelevant. Unbreaking is my longest novel, and there are other things about it that make it unique to me, but either are spoilers or would be boring shop-talk to most.

Lord Lucas Kestrel's anger turns to desire when he meets Miss Rebecca Raleigh. He believes that she's one of the scandalous Archangel courtesans, but he quickly discovers that not only is she innocent, she is the woman he's been seeking.
