Puppies are born after an average of 63 days of gestation, puppies emerge in an amnion that is bitten off and eaten by the mother dog.[6] Puppies begin to nurse almost immediately. If the litter exceeds six puppies, particularly if one or more are obvious runts, human intervention in hand-feeding the stronger puppies is necessary to ensure that the runts get proper nourishment and attention from the mother. As they reach one month of age, puppies are gradually weaned and begin to eat solid food. The mother may regurgitate partially digested food for the puppies or might let them eat some of her solid food.[7] The mother usually refuses to nurse at this stage, though she might let them occasionally nurse for comfort.

At first, puppies spend the large majority of their time sleeping and the rest feeding. They instinctively pile together into a heap, and become distressed if separated from physical contact with their littermates by even a short distance.[8]

Puppies are born with a fully functional sense of smell. They are unable to open their eyes. During their first two weeks, a puppy's senses all develop rapidly. During this stage the nose is the primary sense organ used by puppies to find their mother's teats, and to locate their littermates, if they become separated by a short distance. Puppies open their eyes about nine to eleven days following birth. At first, their retinas are poorly developed and their vision is poor. Puppies are not able to see as well as adult dogs. In addition, puppies' ears remain sealed until about thirteen to seventeen days after birth, after which they respond more actively to sounds. Between two and four weeks old, puppies usually begin to growl, bite, wag their tails, and bark.[9]

Puppies are highly social animals and spend most of their waking hours interacting with either their mother or littermates. When puppies are socialized with humans, particularly between the ages of eight and twelve weeks, they develop social skills around people. Those that do not receive adequate socialization during this period may display fearful behavior around humans or other dogs as adults. The optimum period for socialisation is between eight and twelve weeks; professional animal trainers and the American Kennel Club advise puppies should be introduced to "100 People by 12 Weeks" and have encountered a wide and varied selection of people and environments.[10]

There are ads all over the internet of dogs for sale and newborn puppies for sale, however, pet parents often overlook adopting a four-legged family member from an animal shelter or rescue group when exploring how to search for dogs and puppies for sale.

Shelter and rescue groups may waive an adoption fee, or require a minimal adoption fee to help cover the expenses of sheltering and caring for the pets in their organization. Many of the dogs and puppies at adoption organizations may have received age-appropriate vaccinations and a veterinarian check, been spayed or neutered, and microchipped prior to leaving with new pet parents. To prepare puppies for their lives as guide dogs, puppy raisers socialize them through exposure to different kinds of people, vehicles and dogs. Each inmate or team is responsible for building a solid foundation of skills including basic obedience, teaching the puppies how to eliminate outside on cue, calm and controlled greetings, and settling quietly in the midst of distractions.

Food, toys, collars, leashes and veterinary care are made available to all puppies, though the inmate raisers are given the responsibility to feed, play with and otherwise care for the puppies 24 hours a day. Although the puppies are a full-time job, the inmate puppy raisers are truly volunteers. Many inmates are still required to hold a separate job within the prison; in many cases the puppies attend work with their raisers.

Fried as they are, hush puppies can easily fall into the cooking-so-fast-the-outside-burns-before-the-inside-cooks or the cooking-so-slow-they-become-soggy-with-oil traps. To prevent that, we want to cook them at a respectable 375F (191C). Use your ChefAlarm to set a high-temp alarm at that temperature and a low-temp alarm at 350F (177C). Puppies With A Purpose is a student-led organization that exists to support the Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind (GDF) through 1.) volunteer puppy raising and 2.) assistance animal advocacy and education. Students can get involved as puppy raisers, puppy sitters/campers, or general members in order to help raise future guide dog puppies for GDF and provide assistance animal awareness to the Starkville/MSU community.

Methods: Randomized clinical trial. Puppies were randomly distributed into 2 groups: standard treatment (STD) and standard treatment + FMT (STD + FMT). The STD puppies (n = 33) received only treatment with IV fluids and antimicrobials and the STD + FMT puppies (n = 33) received FMT in addition to standard treatment. For FMT, 10 g of feces from a healthy dog diluted in 10 mL of saline were administered rectally 6-12 hours post-admission.

Results: Among survivors, treatment with FMT was associated with faster resolution of diarrhea (P < .001) and shorter hospitalization time (P = .001; median, 3 days in STD + FMT; median, 6 days in STD) compared to standard treatment. Mortality in STD was 36.4% (12/33) as compared to 21.2% (7/33) in puppies treated with FMT, but there was no statistical difference between groups (P = .174). Polymerase chain reaction indicated that all animals carried canine parvovirus, strain CPV-2b.

Harmony Diers, a veterinary technician at the Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, says that while these problems are not a guaranteed outcome of raising two puppies together, nor are they breed specific, littermate syndrome is more common than not when raising two puppies from the same litter, or even two close in age from separate litters.

Since littermate syndrome is common and can cause unwanted behaviors, potential dog owners should avoid raising two puppies at the same time. Yet if owners are in a situation where they are raising a pair, owner intervention is preferred to help deter those unwanted behaviors, as long as owners can commit to the process.

Finally, Diers recommends that owners provide separate, one-on-one play times to develop a close bond with each puppy. If a pair of puppies attends obedience training, owners should ensure the puppies are in separate classes, too.

Having two puppies at the same time can be a challenge. Still, if owners are active in raising the pups, they can prevent behavioral problems resulting from littermate syndrome, ensuring strong human-animal bonds and twice the puppy love.
