The gameplay is fairly simple in most games, and usually pretty easy to pick up if you have played some kind of Solitaire before. Each game has different rules, although due to the enormity of games in the collection, many end up being very similar with minor changes in rules. There is everything from Klondike to Baker's Dozen to Whitehorse, and quite literally everything in between.

Overall, Pretty Good Solitaire is only pretty good if you are an extreme Solitaire enthusiast or someone wanting to get into professional Solitaire playing. The graphics and sound are very poor and lacking in every category, and the large amount of games is overwhelming and difficult to sift through. The ability to create your own game is a great feature, but there are so many intricate options that only someone well-versed in the workings of a Solitaire game would be able to create something playable.

@Lark An undo option would make more games winnable and some would appreciate it, but I personally like to do without and treat it like a real game. My win rate is around 40% and I'd like to think that's a pretty good number :P

Honestly, with the exception of Charlie and Nick and a few updated/kinder word choices, not much actually changed. Most of the edits are cuts, and as a result the new version of Solitaire is noticeably shorter and slimmer than the old one. As I illustrated above, the changes are pretty concentrated in a few categories. The heaviest edits come at the front end of the novel; there are only a handful in part two.

SOM football was really designed to be a head-to-head game and IMO the advanced version(s) is THE best football game for H-T-H play there is. I tried playing the advanced game solitaire but it was too much trouble, not very fun. That's because the funnest part of the advanced game is physically maneuvering your defensive players around the game board and outwitting your opponent. All that is lost when you play solitaire. IMO, the best way to play SOM solo is to use the basic (elementary) version. It plays very fast (45-70 min), so unlike most other games you can actually replay an entire season for the whole league. There is a price to play for such quick game times however, and that is a lack of detail and a limited amount of play results. Defensive strategy is extremely simplified in the basic game, the only options are guessing pass or run. That's it, no blitzing, double teaming, nickel defenses, dime defenses, goal line defenses, etc., the defense either guesses run or pass.

If you decide to play the basic game, keep it very simple and follow the guidelines in the instruction book for solitaire play. You will have to use your imagination a little to fill in for the detail that's missing (especially for defense). If you can do that I think you will enjoy the game. If you decide to take on the advanced version solitaire, good luck, some folks have come up with systems to play it solitaire but its much too cumbersome, complicated and just too much work for me. I like to keep things simple and fun!

Hi, Daniel H on Borard game Geek, created a really good solitaire method for the advanced game. Below is the link on BGG where you can download the files. I have used it and it is really well done. Of course you might need to make some adjustments depending on the actual game, but it's a method I can definitely recommend.

Most of the attempts to convert solitaire into a campaign oradventure have been dreadful, basically playing the same game over andover again with a weak storyline added for color and some kind ofscoring system, map, or series of ranks to show progress toward agoal. A survey of some of these games will be leftfor another article. The first really successful attempt toadd a coherent theme and storyline to a card solitaire game is Big FishGames' recent game, FairwaySolitaire, which has been a big commercial and criticalsuccess in the casual/arcade game field. It was nominatedin the category of Best Card, Board & Mahjong Game of 2007 (ugh,what a horrible catchall) for the 2008 Zeeby Awards.I voted for it, and was disappointed not to see it get a nomination forBest Casual Game of the Year; I have played most of those nominees andthe only one even close is Build-A-Lot. Unfortunately, it also lost out to the dismal Monopoly:Here and Now for Best Card, Board & Mahjong Game.

Fairway's success is certainly a good thing for solitaireenthusiasts, as it may encourage other designers to try out other ideasin the same vein. I wish I could give it an unqualifiedrave review; I like it a lot and have played the download version allthe way through seven times (over 200 hours of play in all) and theonline version all the way through once. Fairway certainly makesevery other version of Golf or TriPeakssolitaire seem bland by comparison. The replay value ofthe game is probably better than any casual game around, and almosteverything about it is first rate: it is colorful and entertaining,with pleasing graphics and sound, lots of variety as you go from courseto course and hole to hole, and there is plenty of strategy. Butit has, in my opinion,two major design flaws and some other lesser flawswhich keep it from being the truly great game it could havebeen. I like the game so much, in fact, that I am going topoint out every single flaw I have come across; the most important ofthese I have marked with orange arrows. But somehistory first:

Glen DeBiasa, a programmer at BigFish Games,had an idea for a version of Golf solitaire with enhancements to makethe game more interesting and to make it fit better into the theme ofthe real game of golf. John Cutter of Big Fish Gamesexpanded and developed the idea, calling it Fairway Solitaire, andCutter and DeBiasa began developing a Java version. The designers wisely stuck to a pretty conventional singledeck,avoiding the tedious marathon layouts found in some other solitairegames. The deck for each hole consists of four of each of thethirteen ranks (the cards have suit markings, though suits areirrelevant), plus a variable number of irons and Wild Shot cards (up totwo of each, I think), plus optionally one (rarely more) Wedgecard. So each hole is dealt from a deck of anywhere from 52 to 56cards; anywhere from 22 to 40 are dealt onto the course in some kind ofarrangment, and the rest form a stock.
