On February 22nd, 2023, another app called Popjam announced its closing date to many users. Due to the high amount of users active, they all started planning their migration to another app before Popjam closed it's doors for good. This is where Sketchers United comes in! While some users decided to go to Instagram, a majority of Popjammers made their new home Sketchers United. This was then dubbed "The Popjam Invasion." Many popjammers, including famous ones like @maysees, migrated to this platform aswell. Along with this, some people like @Meowtown returned to Popjam to announce that they were on Sketchers aswell. Meowtown was actually one of many to have a neon star, a common yet rare thing that could be earned on Popjam. They brought their fanbases with them and before long, hundreds of Popjammers moved platforms. By the time Popjam closed its doors on March 8th, 2023, almost all its users had moved to Sketchers.
I am posting here to make you aware of the Popjam app and the danger I believe it poses to children. It is an app which is marketed to children aged from 7 to 13. It is made by a company called Mind Candy who also are behind other games such as Mooshi Monsters, and your child may see this app advertised through using these games.

Without my knowledge my daughter was using this app for a month. It is easy to set up an account, you just choose a profile name and a password and you are in. It is marketed by the company as a game, as a safe environment for children to be empowered and express their creativity. It is far from this, it is a dangerous and dark place for children to be where they are being put in a very difficult position.
In the one month that my daughter was on the app she posted 235 times, and managed to accrue 555 followers, none of whom she knew. She was also following in excess of 800 people as the app incentivises children to follow, be followed and to post. She had posted photographs of herself, in her uniform, in her bed in pyjamas, photos of her siblings, of our pets. She had made comments in public view to other users disclosing facts about her location, where she went to school etc.
I have seen many children posting selfies and photographs which put their safety at real risk. They are discussing in full public view details of their lives, where they are going, what they are doing, where they go to school, how old they are, what their hobbies are and where they like to hang out. These children do not see the danger in this site as they see it as a game, because that is how it is marketed to them through using other Mind Candy games.
POPJAM is supposed to be only for children but there is no knowing how many people using the site are actually adults with sinister intent. I have created an account for myself and it took less than a minute. No email required, no parental consent required, nothing, choose your name and password and welcome to a world that is basically instagram for children. I have posted a video on facebook and twitter to show just how easy it is for an adult with sinister motive to get onto this app.
I have asked popjam how they can know how many adults are on this site posing as children, but in their response the omitted to an answer this question. I found a man on the site who was following my daughter, he was clearly in his 30s as he had posted photographs of himself. I have asked Popjam what his possible motive could be being on this app for children, but again they have omitted to reply to this question. I have created my own profile, I have asked them how they will find me, how they will know I am an adult and again they have omitted to answer this. I have pointed out how easy it would be for me to now groom children if I was an adult with that intent, again they have not addressed this issue in their reply to me.
I have seen photographs of children, selfies that they have taken, when the comments underneath from other users are words such as "bitch" "ugly" and "scum".
Please join my campaign to raise awareness of this app, and follow us on facebook and twitter. Please be aware if your child is using this app as in my view it is not a safe online environment for children in any way, and the makers of this app have not answered any of my questions regarding safety issues.

I am very careful as to what my dc gets up to online. At 11, she is still supervised & always asks, because I have gone over the dangers of the internet etc.
I check out everything she wants to get involved in, before she gets involved.
I have just found this app on both my dd's ipod and I amm horrified. They are both going to delete it (although they are unamused with me). I have security set up so things are supposed to get oked by me first I cant even thing how they got this past me other than its inoffensive name and obvious looks like a gameness.
We have had everyn conversation going about internet safety and they just still cant see how this is a problem. Think I will be blocking the internet for the time being.
thank you thekitchenwitch. It was the privacy settings that concerned me and that they are encouraged to get followers. Not blaming the game at all, definatly me not doing my job as a parent well enough. When i talked to my dd's despite having had many talks about internet safety they did not see a problem with sharing photos and info with strangers.
LilyRoxanne - if you are a child wtf are you doing on mumsnet?! Why would we be interesting or relevant to you? ANYONE can lie about their details. The number of children that have fb account despite needing to be over thirteen is huge, they have just lied about their DOB! Grooming has happened because people have lied about their details. And why would an entire app be shut down just because 1 adult is on it. You come across as niave and ignorant as to the dangers of the net. Perhaps you should look here for the police based information as to the risks of the internet
Not sure how a google account is relevant to looking at advice from the police on internet safety. You are very worrying in your lack of understanding of how the internet works. I hope you are lucky enough to stay out of trouble.
PopJam doesn't let kids post about their location or any details about themselves. It doesn't even let them say what their name is. Perhaps this was only in an update after you posted this, but it did it a year and a half ago and before so I am not sure. Basically, PopJam is not dangerous.
I've just discovered that my 10 year old is using this app and she has shared her name and her age on her profile. I found she has been chatting with people that she may or may not know, thankfully the chat's seem fairly innocuous but I had no idea that they could get access to these sorts of apps when you have the restrictions in place! I've found that she has posted pics of herself, thankfully only her face and only with cartoon eyes and mouth but I was shocked when I saw she had over 300 followers. I will be deleting the app with her when she wakes up tomorrow. Don't even know how to tell her dad...
Popjam doesn't let kids share their name or post pictures of themselves without a serious disguise. Some kids use it to show their creativity safely. It's not Popjam's fault that your kids are so stupid and naive and don't understand the Internet. They're not gonna delete it because of one stupid child.
