Windows 11's Clock app has a "focus session" feature, which is essentially a built-in Pomodoro timer. The Pomodoro time management technique is a popular method for maintaining productive focus, and now Windows 11 users can try it without any third-party software.

Pomodoro means "tomato" in Italian and the name comes from the tomato-shaped kitchen timer used by the method's creator Francesco Cirillo. A focus session is similar to a "Pomodoro" and the technique uses a fixed cycle:

To set a session length, click the up or down arrows on the timer. One drawback of the Focus Session timer is that it doesn't have the classic 25-minute Pomodoro length. However, if you set it to 45 minutes, you'll get two 20-minute sessions with a five-minute break in-between. If you set it to 135 minutes, you'll have 23-minute sessions with five-minute breaks, which is pretty close to Pomodoro!

The basic focus sessions functionality is straightforward to use, but you can get even more from it by digging into the customization options. To start, click on the three dots at the top-right corner of the timer widget and select "View Settings."

If you use your Windows computer a lot, focusing on the task at hand can be difficult. While the Windows OS features some handy focus features to tackle distractions, a Pomodoro technique timer can help you focus more on the work and be less distracted.

When the timer starts, the small screen feature will activate. A timer overlay is placed on the desktop and on top of others apps to help keep track of time without opening the app to view progress. It is something we did miss on Focus To-Do.

Focus Journal tracks focused and distracted activities separately and show your activity in the left pane. The Pomodoro timer follows the default timing setup. You can, however, configure the timer to your liking in settings. Additionally, toggle the Minimize switch to use the app in timer overlay mode on top of other apps.

The Pomodoro timer Paymo offers is very close to the authentic Pomodoro experience. At its core, Paymo is one of the few project management software with native time tracking and probably among the best that allows you to track time using the Pomodoro technique. Check this list of time-tracking software for yourself and see how other apps fare.

The interface is cleaner than most apps, featuring a default 25-minute timer with 5- and 15-minute breaks. Of course, you can change their duration and choose whether to enable sounds when a work session or break ends from the Pomodoro settings.

Notice a couple of things here. You need to approximate how many pomodoros it takes to finish a task. This information is not readily accessible, but you should get the hang of it through some trial and error.

Using a Pomodoro timer is not advisable when you are engaged in fast-paced projects where changes can occur at any minute. Or when you require a lot of input from others, like a team leader or sales ops manager.

While you can always get one of those, Tomato Shaped Kitchen Timer from Amazon, we recommend using Pomodoro timer apps on your devices. They not only let you keep a log of all your work but you can also take it anywhere you go. Not to mention tons of other features that come with it.

In the default setting, you get 4 Pomodoros of 25 minutes each followed by 5 minutes break and a longer break at the end of all the 4 sessions. You can pause the timer in between or jump straight to the next Pomodoro if you want. The settings page offers customization of Pomodoro and breaks length, you can even change the alarm sound in the settings. Focus 10 is a free app and offers just that, however, if you want more features, read on.

A Pomodoro app that implements the technique with a few more features and increases the potency of the app. Focus Journal offers more than just one profile. You can create separate timers for different tasks.

You get two buttons on the bottom; Minimize and auto distraction mode. The minimize button draws a tiny timer just like YAPA on the corner of the screen and auto distraction mode detects your distractions while running the timer. You can run this app either for productivity or to calculate distractions. In productivity mode it works like a normal Pomodoro app, however, in the distracted mode, you count the times you got distracted. It keeps a log of successful Pomodoro and distractions.

The app syncs your activities and tasks to other devices linked with the account. You can set Pomodoro timers and to-do lists and add items to the list. You can prioritize the list items by pinning and adding hashtags. The pro version offers a few extra features in the to-do list like create sub-to-dos, set reminders, repeat, and add notes.

Yapa is my favorite Pomodoro Timer Windows app because it has the most intuitive timer. I struggle immensely with aimlessly browsing YouTube, Reddit, Twitter, and some random news sites when I want to be focusing on something else. I also have found that using a pomodoro timer helps my brain do a mental shift, even if it is placebo, into doing some useful work. So why not combine the two ideas?

Explore whether the /etc/hosts approach would work on Mac / Windows (doubtful?). The idea, is that the script would automatically edit /etc/hosts and restart the local network service to make the changes, and then revert the old state of /etc/hosts back either during a short break in the timer, or when the app closes.

Over time, you'll get a better sense of how many high-quality pomodoros you're actually capable of completing in a day. It's ok if it's not a full sixteen. The vast majority of people aren't actually productive for the full 8 hours of a workday, and those who think they are probably haven't been paying close enough attention. When it comes to pomodoros, challenge yourself, but keep the focus on quality over quantity.
