A pivot gun was a type of cannon mounted on a fixed central emplacement which permitted it to be moved through a wide horizontal arc.[1] They were a common weapon aboard ships and in land fortifications for several centuries but became obsolete after the invention of gun turrets.

By mounting a cannon on a pivot, a much wider arc of fire could be obtained than was possible with conventional carriage-mounted cannons. Unlike the latter, however, pivot guns were fixed in one place and could not easily be moved outside of their horizontal arc; they could thus only really be used in fixed positions such as in a fort or on a battleship.

There was no standard size of pivot gun, though they tended to be fairly substantial weapons. Like other cannons, they were usually muzzleloaders and could fire either shells or grapeshot (or other types of shot). Their calibers ranged from a few inches to the giant 11-inch Dahlgren guns used by the United States Navy in the mid-19th century.

Pivot guns had a major disadvantage in warfare: they were very difficult to protect in battle and were necessarily very exposed, as they lay close to the surface of a ship's deck and required an open field of view. In the late 19th century they were replaced by "disappearing guns" and ultimately by turrets, which enabled a broad arc of fire while providing the gunners with all-round protection from incoming fire.

The earliest documented pivot gun I have found was on the brig Oneida (1808) built on Lake Ontario. Google, CG Davis, H.Capelle, and these forums so far have not yielded any earlier reference. Fredrik Chapman is famous for his light gunboat with a removable infantry cannon, but I'm assuming this mounting was not a true pivot gun. Is the pivot gun a little-documented European or Arab invention?

I do not know for sure who invented the pivot gun, but the earliest example I have seen is Oneida. I have never seen a deck mounted pivot gun rigged on a Revolutionary War vessel. Certainly none of them American ships that have been documented had them.

The upper receiver of the pivot is made from aluminum, along with a portion of the lower receiver. The grip frame of the lower receiver is made from polymer, with a styling similar to aftermarket Glock grip frames. The threaded steel barrel and bolt carrier group are also treated with corrosion resistant finishes. A segmented Picatinny rail runs across the top of the upper receiver, and also includes a small segment at the front of the fore-end for mounting optics. There are also M-Lok compatible slots machined into the sides and bottom of the fore-end for further accessory attachment.

I own several handguns and shoot them regularly at the local sports shooting range. Unless I was to move to a state that is friendly to automatic rifles, I feel I have pretty much what I desire in guns :) Among the hand guns I own I favor the Sig Sauer P210 and Smith and Wesson 686. Both shoot extremely well.

Cumberland's aft pivot gun (looks like a 10-inch Dahlgren here) was replaced in 1861 with a "70-pounder rifle" (possibly a 60-pdr Parrott rifle). This was one of the few guns able to damage CSS Virginia's armor.

I have owned a few well used guns where the trigger pin became loose in the frame, one was sent to S&W for replacement, the second is still running fine with over 20,000 rounds thru it gun, unless the grooves are interfering with your trigger pull, I would lubricate them and shoot the gun. If the wear is affecting your trigger pull, at one time S&W would sell a replacement stud that could be replaced by a competent Gunsmith, as your gun is stainless it would be fairly easy to remove the old pin , press in a new one, stake it in and refinish the outside of the frame. A call to their customer service would let you know if a replacement stud is still available.

Yes, the trigger has worn "grooves" in the pin, and the hole in the trigger is not round anymore, it's visibly oval.

I will try the S&W Forum as well, and contact S&W customer support to explore if there is a possibility to get a new trigger pivot pin.

If the look isn't that important, I would find a good machinist and have them dial in the pin to get location, mill off the pin, drill and ream a through hole and press fit a hardened steel dowel pin. The dowel pin would probably have to be made special, but that is pretty easy for someone with the tools and knowledge. That would be about an hour (or less) job in my shop. I would get a new trigger with round pivot holes too.

To deploy the gun you stroke the action release and pivot the top half around 180 degrees. Everything locks in place automatically. You can then deploy the buttstock as desired. Breaking the gun down for storage involves clearing the action, removing the magazine, hitting the release catch and doing everything in reverse.

The term swivel gun (or simply swivel) usually refers to a small cannon, mounted on a swiveling stand or fork which allows a very wide arc of movement. Another type of firearm referred to as a swivel gun was an early flintlock combination gun with two barrels that rotated along their axes to allow the shooter to switch between rifled and smoothbore barrels. Swivel guns should not be confused with pivot guns, which were far larger weapons mounted on a horizontal pivot, or screw guns, which are a ...
