While there are three alternates in the 2023 Kentucky Derby field, there is not going to be a bigger upset than Rich Strike's win as an 80-1 longshot last year. Jace's Road and King Russell are both 32-1 in the 2023 Kentucky Derby odds, making them the biggest longshots as the horses approach the gates. The 2023 Kentucky Derby field features just 18 horses following five scratches, including morning-line favorite Forte just hours before Saturday's 6:57 p.m. ET post time. Which horses have value as 2023 Kentucky Derby bets?

Tapit Trice, who is the most expensive horse in the field, is a 9-2 co-favorite with Angel of Empire. Derma Sotogake (7-1), Two Phil's (7-1) and Kingsbarns (9-1) became stronger 2023 Kentucky Derby contenders when Forte was scratched. Before making any 2023 Kentucky Derby picks, be sure to see the horse racing predictions and futures bets from SportsLine's elite horse racing expert Jody Demling.

A fixture in the horse racing world who has been writing about, talking about and betting on races for years, Demling enters the 2023 Kentucky Derby having nailed the winner of the Belmont Stakes four of the last fives years, including an exacta in 2022 with Mo Donegal and Nest. He also nailed Flightline's win at the Breeders' Cup Classic last November.

Demling is at his best in the biggest horse races in the world like the Kentucky Derby 2023. In fact, he has hit 10 of the last 14 Derby-Oaks doubles at Churchill Downs. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both races all but four times in the last 14 years. He's also called nine of the last 18 Preakness winners, keenly understanding when the Kentucky Derby winner was poised for victory or a massive upset, and nailed the 2022 Preakness trifecta. Anyone who has followed him is up huge.

One of Demling's surprising 2023 Kentucky Derby picks: He is fading Tapit Trice, who is one of the co-favorites at 9-2. Priced at 5-1 on the morning line, he's now moved to even shorter odds after five scratches this week, most notably Forte. Tapit Trice has won four straight races and is a popular ticket after taking first in the Blue Grass Stakes and the Tampa Bay Derby within the past two months.

But Demling is taking a hard stance against him, saying he barely even cracks the top 10 in a race he doesn't think will match his style. "Still needs to show some improvement -- especially mentally -- in my mind to face an 18-horse field," Demling told SportsLine. See which other 2023 Kentucky Derby horses to avoid at SportsLine.

Another stunner: Demling is high on Derma Sotogake at 7-1. A Japan-bred horse has never won a Kentucky Derby, but this thoroughbred colt has a clear shot at making history and winning the Run for the Roses. Demling was impressed by Derma Sotogake's win at the UAE Derby on Mar. 25, where his super speed was on full display on the 1 3/16 mile track at Meydan Racecourse.

Demling's top choice is a massive longshot who "has a big shot to win" on Saturday. Anyone who backs this horse could hit it big. Demling is sharing which horse it is, along with his entire projected leaderboard, over at SportsLine.

The consensus box of Del Mar horse racing picks comes from handicappers Bob Mieszerski, Art Wilson, Terry Turrell and Eddie Wilson. Here are the picks for thoroughbred races on Friday, November 17, 2023.

Trainer Brad Cox is already a Kentucky Derby winner with Mandaloun in 2021, but because he wasn't ruled the winner until the following year when Medina Spirit was officially disqualified, Cox hasn't enjoyed the winner's circle in the "Run for the Roses." On Saturday at the 2023 Kentucky Derby, he'll have four horses running in the first leg of the Triple Crown at Churchill Downs. Thus far, Cox has avoided the rash of scratches that has impacted the Kentucky Derby 2023 and is expected to have Hit Show, Angel of Empire, Verifying and Jace's Road in the starting gate for the 2023 Kentucky Derby post time at 6:57 p.m. ET.

Angel of Empire is a 9-2 co-favorite alongside Todd Pletcher's Tapit Trice in the 2023 Kentucky Derby odds. Meanwhile, Hit Show is listed at 26-1, Verifying -- a son of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify -- is at 16-1, and Jace's Road is at 32-1. Cox is a Louisville native and leads North American trainers in earnings for 2023 entering Saturday at Churchill Downs. With very little separating the top contenders in this wide-open 2023 Kentucky Derby lineup, you'll want to see what SportsLine horse racing guru Gene Menez has to say before making any Kentucky Derby picks.

A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years. Between 2010 and 2012, he served as SI's handicapper for the Triple Crown races and correctly predicted Super Saver to win the Kentucky Derby in 2010. In 2015, while writing for Sports on Earth, Menez accurately gave out the Kentucky Derby superfecta (American Pharoah, Firing Line, Dortmund and Frosted), which paid $1,268.20 for $2. Then in 2017, he tweeted out his Kentucky Derby picks, including Always Dreaming to win, and hit the Pick 4, which paid almost $6,900 on a $1 bet.

On Dec. 26, Menez hit the Pick 5 at Santa Anita Park for $798.70. And in his last seven races for SportsLine he has cashed the winner of the Lecomte Stakes ($172.50), the exacta in the Southwest Stakes ($468), the winner of the Holy Bull Stakes ($180), the winner of the Sam F. Davis Stakes ($228), the place horse of the Rebel Stakes ($102.50) and the trifecta in the Jenny Wiley Stakes ($255.50).

But no horse in the field was hurt more by Monday's post draw than Tapit Trice, who was assigned the No. 5 post. "The problem with the post is that he's on the inside, but he needs to pass horses on the outside," Menez told SportsLine. Menez is using Tapit Trice only sparingly in his 2023 Kentucky Derby bets. See which other horses to fade here.

Some discounted that speed because it came on a synthetic surface. But Menez was impressed and has Two Phil's very close to the top of his leaderboard. "He has run well on dirt before, winning the Street Sense at Churchill Downs and finishing second in the Lecomte and third in the Risen Star Stakes," Menez told SportsLine. See which other horses to back here.

Menez's top pick is a horse who's "getting better at the right time." He also is high on a massive double-digit longshot who "always passes horses late." He is including these horses in his 2023 Kentucky Derby bets, and so should you. He's sharing which horses to back only at SportsLine.

So what double-digit longshot wins the Kentucky Derby? What double-digit longshot is a must-back? And how has Menez constructed his wagers? Check out the latest 2023 Kentucky Derby odds below, then visit SportsLine to see Menez's picks for the Kentucky Derby, all from the expert who has nailed this year's prep races.

It works like this: Have each person ante up $5, and pool the money. Each person in the group picks one race and one horse to bet to show. Place the first bet, and parlay the money on the next race and horse if you win.

When it comes to betting on horse races, you need to decide what type of bet to place before you even place a bet on a horse. As the bets you can make range from a simple bet on a single horse in one race to choosing the winning horses for six consecutive races, you may need the information in the table below to help you explore your betting options.

When the federal government banned bookmakers, pari-mutuel wagering took its place at the racetracks. When you bet on a horse, and it wins, your profits come from the losing horseplayers who bet on other horses in the same race. ff782bc1db
