While there are three alternates in the 2023 Kentucky Derby field, there is not going to be a bigger upset than Rich Strike's win as an 80-1 longshot last year. Jace's Road and King Russell are both 32-1 in the 2023 Kentucky Derby odds, making them the biggest longshots as the horses approach the gates. Demling is at his best in the biggest horse races in the world like the Kentucky Derby 2023. In fact, he has hit 10 of the last 14 Derby-Oaks doubles at Churchill Downs. That means he held a ticket with the winners of both races all but four times in the last 14 years. He's also called nine of the last 18 Preakness winners, keenly understanding when the Kentucky Derby winner was poised for victory or a massive upset, and nailed the 2022 Preakness trifecta. One of Demling's surprising 2023 Kentucky Derby picks: He is fading Tapit Trice, who is one of the co-favorites at 9-2. Priced at 5-1 on the morning line, he's now moved to even shorter odds after five scratches this week, most notably Forte. Tapit Trice has won four straight races and is a popular ticket after taking first in the Blue Grass Stakes and the Tampa Bay Derby within the past two months.

But Demling is taking a hard stance against him, saying he barely even cracks the top 10 in a race he doesn't think will match his style. Another stunner: Demling is high on Derma Sotogake at 7-1. A Japan-bred horse has never won a Kentucky Derby, but this thoroughbred colt has a clear shot at making history and winning the Run for the Roses. Demling was impressed by Derma Sotogake's win at the UAE Derby on Mar. 25, where his super speed was on full display on the 1 3/16 mile track at Meydan Racecourse.

Trainer Brad Cox is already a Kentucky Derby winner with Mandaloun in 2021, but because he wasn't ruled the winner until the following year when Medina Spirit was officially disqualified, Cox hasn't enjoyed the winner's circle in the "Run for the Roses." On Saturday at the 2023 Kentucky Derby, he'll have four horses running in the first leg of the Triple Crown at Churchill Downs. Thus far, Cox has avoided the rash of scratches that has impacted the Kentucky Derby 2023 and is expected to have Hit Show, Angel of Empire, Verifying and Jace's Road in the starting gate for the 2023 Kentucky Derby post time at 6:57 p.m. ET.

Angel of Empire is a 9-2 co-favorite alongside Todd Pletcher's Tapit Trice in the 2023 Kentucky Derby odds. Meanwhile, Hit Show is listed at 26-1, Verifying -- a son of 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify -- is at 16-1, and Jace's Road is at 32-1. Cox is a Louisville native and leads North American trainers in earnings for 2023 entering Saturday at Churchill Downs. A former reporter and editor at Sports Illustrated, Menez covered an array of sports, including horse racing, for the magazine and its website for almost 14 years.
