Throughout my life, magazines were something communal: passed around at a sleepover as a girl or shared in college when we were too broke to get our own subscriptions. Reading them was inextricably tied up with my friendships with other women. Whether it was fashion tips and dating advice or later, feminist essays and profiles of political candidates, the pages of magazines have always been something to be discussed and digested among like-minded women.

Not only did magazines encourage women to be leaders, but they also served as a surrogate community for many rural women who lived far from neighbors, encouraging a rapport both among readers and with the editors. These magazines brought art, culture, literature and community to women, especially in remote areas, which constituted much of the US for most of our history.

I got my hands on a box full of sports magazines and never hsipped those. I figured, they cannot be shipped using media mail and if I want to print a shipping label through Ebay, I have to chose first class with delivery confirmation, where the envelope must be thicker than 1 inch. Magazines are not as thick, so I really don't have a clue how to ship those. If I use a normal flat envelope, I can't print the label though ebay and have to use stamps without delivery confirmation, right? Which is always risky. What are you guys using.? I saw sellers who use the media mail $3,49 option, but magazines are not allowed in media mail.

Are other sellers simply saying "send it MEDIA"...and it is passing, or are magazines being listed to ship with $10-$12 shipping charges? (if so, how in the world is anyone selling any? Paper is valuable yes...but it ain't THAT valuable. Playboy (when shipping in those little "black coverthingys" back in the day NEVER charged "Priority Shipping Rates" and those "ads" inside were still for ACTIVE companies. They sent it media. Or "3rd Class".

It did not change. This is nothing new. It has always been this way: No advertising. No advertising, period. It does not matter if the advertising is outdated. NOTHING WITH ADS has ever been allowed to ship Media Mail, not since its inception. No one at USPS has the time to vet magazines or comics or other material to determine if the advertising in it is outdated or current, so it is a blanket ban.

When magazine publishers like Playboy sent magazines to subscribers, they did not use media mail - they used special commercial periodical rates that are only available to businesses shipping pre-sorted mail in bulk.

Playboy was not sending magazines via Media Mail. Current magazines sent to subscribers using bulk rate mailing qualify for their own rates....whether Playboy or the National Review. Neither Playboy (if it is still being published, I'm not sure?) nor I, with one back issue to sell, can send Playboys via Media Mail.

Apparently this question about older magazines comes up regularly. Here's a chart which USPS put together as a staff reference in 2013, which has separate categories for "old" and "new" magazines although neither is eligible.

(1)Operate and maintain the Law Enforcement Agencies Data System (LEADS), a statewide, computerized telecommunications system designed to provide services, information, and capabilities to the law enforcement and criminal justice community in the State of Illinois.

Insofar as law enforcement is authorized to receive the endorsement affidavit information in the performance of their duties and the ISP is authorized to operate and maintain LEADS for purposes of providing information to the law enforcement community, these provisions collectively grant the ISP the authority to utilize LEADS for the purposes of communicating to law enforcement whether a person has submitted an endorsement affidavit and is therefore subject to the exemption as set forth in 720 ILCS 24/5-1.9(d).
