99% of the time, you should use feature detection to determine whether a browser supports a particular feature or API. Yet sometimes browser sniffing is the right choice. There are two approaches you can take to detect Opera Mini. You can:

The choice to run with Mini is an attempt to dive through a loophole in Apple's SDK, Opera told CNET. Opera Mini is backed by a proxy server, which means that the browser gets compressed versions of Web pages via Opera's servers. In more technical terms, there's no code being executed or scripts bring run in Opera Mini. Every Web page request is projected, in a sense, through Opera's filter, instead of being actively generated from and delivered to the browser the way it is on Safari, which does run its own Web code.

We wouldn't mind trying either of Opera's browsers--with their nearly identical interfaces--on iPhone.

In Opera Mini, the app menu pops up vertically, in some cases, hindering the full page view, whereas the Opera browser has a horizontal menu to sign into an Opera account, and access other navigation controls and is better designed with a less cluttered feel.

While the Opera browser is better for use with good internet connectivity, page rendering without compromise, and frequenting secure sites, Opera Mini is better suited if traveling or living in areas with limited connectivity, high mobile data rates or if using a low-powered device that struggles to manage rich content.

Passwords Not Saved Between PCs By Default: Opera stores passwords in such a way that they are encrypted in a way tied to current PC's operating system, the same issue Google Chrome has. While the passwords are not kept or left behind on the PC itself, they won't be retrievable when you move to a new PC. You must sync your password to Opera in order to preserve them as you move PCs or upgrade operating systems.

Note that other portable browsers such as Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition do not have the password, extension, and certificate issues mentioned above.
