so me and my friend enjoy playing scrabble online just for fun. Nothing too serious. Sometimes we want to use words like brand names, cusswords, or something that means something to both of us and we'd agree is a word, but isn't in any dictionary. Is there some kind of online scrabble out there where you can use any kind of words as long as the other players are okay with it? When I was a kid there was an offline scrabble version that let you use custom words if both players okayed them. Anything like that online?

Since there doesn't seem to be any SCRABBLE games for download or purchase yet that are specifically Windows 7 compatible, there's really only one good option if you want to play against a computer online...

But if you sign up, you can play against the "Robot" at different difficulty levels (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced, Expert or Master), and you have the option of playing against other online players in different free game rooms. The only real downfall of playing on Pogo are the ads that are plastered all over the screen. It's not that big of deal, but it could become annoying if you let it.

There are other options online, but most require a social play and no solo games against AI, like Facebook and the Internet SCRABBLE Club. And there are programs, like SCRABBLE Champion Edition and SCRABBLE Plus PC, that aren't specifically for Windows 7, but are rumored to work just fine, although there is no online play.

I didn't know that there are no online SCRABBLE games on w7 yet--Do you also mean no vista either ? I do have W7 professional which works for XP, but my Old SCRABBLE wont work there , But maybe a new ONLINE XP equivelant would do the trick.

Secondly, there are "online" games for Windows 7, but as of yet, there aren't any downloadable or disc versions. That just means you can play things like Pogo and Facebook without downloading software. If you're looking for online play with a full screen board, ISC's WordBiz could be the way to go, but it's purely online play against other Scrabblers (no computer opponents), and it's not the prettiest way to play, either. It doesn't specify which Windows OS's it will work on though.

3. Scrabble Champion Edition: This is a version of what I play on my computer. It's simple, very simple. And it's not full screen (at least not on my computer... I have a Mac). There's no online play. It's purely computer opponents. Runs on Vista, XP, Me, 2000 and 98. It's relatively cheap at about $6 or $7.

4. Scrabble PLUS: This is a new game out that runs on Vista, XP or 2000. It has the classic game, plus it has different versions, like Scrabble Golf. I prefer to stick with the classic version, so all of these new and "fun" games are a turn off, but it does have the real version. I hear (or read) this game works fine for Windows 7 users, but I'm not sure if it has an online play option. I think this is about $20, but there is a FREE TRIAL you can download, but it only works for 60 minutes, supposedly.

I always play facebook scrabble. Its a good place to find friends too that you can chat to as well as play. Watch out for people using annagrammer.com though, somtimes its a pain because they wont start cheating until either they are losing or halfway through. Personally I just ignore the fact that my stats are damaged and quit the game instantly if I suspect they are cheating but I guess it comes down to judgement. I had someone use DRAGOON on triple word score last night. I quit straight away. Its hard to tell, but I dont think they know what dragoon is. ZINCOUS was another.

Everyone seems to love the online game -- everyone, that is, except the companies that own the rights to Scrabble: Hasbro, which sells it in North America, and Mattel, which markets it everywhere else.

Jayant Agarwalla, 21, said they did not create Scrabulous to make money, even though they now collect about $25,000 a month from online advertising. They just wanted to play Scrabble on their computers, and their favorite (unauthorized) site had started charging, he said.

There is no time limit for moves or games. Scrabulous keeps track of player statistics, and it does not allow fake words. It cannot, however, prevent players from cheating. One method is an online "helper" program, which generates a list of possible words based on the letters a user has.

Two digital game companies, RealNetworks of Seattle and Electronic Arts of Redwood City, Calif., say they have signed deals with Hasbro to create online versions of the company's games. Both say their versions of Scrabble will be out shortly. But Scrabulous has already brought Scrabble a newfound virtual popularity that none of the game companies could have anticipated.

The threat of legal action has not gained the companies many admirers. Many Scrabulous fans, some of whom say they bought the board game for the first time after playing the online version on Facebook, call their approach heavy-handed and out of touch.

Hasbro, meanwhile, said in a statement that Electronic Arts was planning to release an online version of Scrabble this spring. And Mattel, which signed a deal with RealNetworks last July, says that settling with the Agarwallas would set a bad precedent.

My first thought was YANBU, but isnt this exsctly what women are advised to do IRL? Join running, cycling, hill walking, male dominated hobby groups etc which have more men, so they can look for dates? Perhaps there are married men out there telling their single friends "join an online hobby group that has lots of women - oooh, scrabble would be a great one! Don't worry, John, you'll meet someone, you're an absolute catch!".

I stopped playing words with friends etc because of this got so sick of games starting, the other person sending lewd messages and refusing to play. Always loved scrabble but have no one to play with in rl!
