Productivity software (also called personal productivity software or office productivity software[1]) is application software used for producing information (such as documents, presentations, worksheets, databases, charts, graphs, digital paintings, electronic music and digital video).[2] Its names arose from it increasing productivity, especially of individual office workers, from typists to knowledge workers, although its scope is now wider than that. Office suites, which brought word processing, spreadsheet, and relational database programs to the desktop in the 1980s, are the core example of productivity software. They revolutionized the office with the magnitude of the productivity increase they brought as compared with the pre-1980s office environments of typewriters, paper filing, and handwritten lists and ledgers. In the United States, some 78% of "middle-skill" occupations (those that call for more than a high school diploma but less than a bachelor's degree) now require the use of productivity software.[3] In the 2010s, productivity software has become even more consumerized than it already was, as computing becomes ever more integrated into daily personal life.

An office suite is a bundle of productivity software (a software suite) intended to be used by office workers. The components are generally distributed together, have a consistent user interface and usually can interact with each other, sometimes in ways that the operating system would not normally allow.[4]

The earliest office suite for personal computers was MicroPro International's StarBurst in the early 1980s, comprising the WordStar word processor, the CalcStar spreadsheet and the DataStar database software.[5] Other suites arose in the 1980s, and Microsoft Office came to dominate the market in the 1990s,[6] a position it retains as of 2019[update].

During the 1990s, office suite products gained popularity by offering bundles of applications that, when bought as part of a suite, effectively discounted the individual applications, with four or five applications being bundled for the price of two applications bought separately. When faced with such potential savings, customers could be "tempted by the suite, rather than the value of a particular product", and by 1994 more than 60 percent of the sales of Microsoft Word and around 70 percent of the sales of Microsoft Excel were as part of sales of Microsoft Office. Such considerations had an impact on vendors of individual applications, often smaller companies, raising concerns that office suites were "stifling innovation", and even established vendors such as Borland and WordPerfect were having to adapt to the suite phenomenon, Borland ultimately deciding to sell its Quattro Pro spreadsheet to WordPerfect as the latter sought to assemble its own suite product. The dominant suite vendors, Microsoft and Lotus, downplayed competition and innovation concerns, claiming that users were still able to exercise choice and that "user-driven development" was guiding the evolution of office suites. Another view was that component-based software would eventually emerge, focusing development on more specialised components used by productivity software, empowering "a plethora of third-party developers", and that a "mix and match" approach of such components would adapt to the user's way of working.[7]

Edit (6/14): thanks for all of the feedback everyone. So far from here I've learned of Skiff and Onlyoffice as great alternatives and also Cryptpad. So pricing wise it looks like if you want to use protonmail for both business and personal it's $75 a year. Onlyoffice is free but you can use hosting for a flat fee of $150. Skiff is in beta and has yet to announce pricing. Cryptpad is free.

An online office suite, online productivity suite or cloud office suite is an office suite offered in the form of a web application, accessed online using a web browser. This allows people to work together worldwide and at any time, thereby leading to web-based collaboration and virtual teamwork. Some online office suites can be installed either on-premise or online and some are offered only as online as a software as a service. Some versions can be free of charge, some have a subscription fee. Some online office suites can run as progressive web applications which no longer require an online connection to function. Online office suites exist as both open-source and proprietary software.

In computing, an office suite is a collection of productivity software usually containing at least a word processor, spreadsheet and a presentation program. There are many different brands and types of office suites.

I have really tried to use LibreOffice any number of times ever since I first heard about it. At first, I thought it was pretty good. However, the more formatting features I try to use, the more functional differences I find between LiberOffice and EVERY other office suite I have ever used. LibreWriter document formatting is COMPLETELY counter-intuitive and drives me crazy every time it mangles one of my documents. Bullet points are completely useless and I have to use them a lot in my technical documents. So, the question remains. Who decided that LibreOffice had to be different just for the sake of being different???

Perhaps LibreOffice is so different from other office suites because it has a very distinctive concept to support users in formatting as much as possible. LibreOffice is prepared for all kinds of documents, from simple letters to complex technical descriptions and books.

To be honest, it takes a little more time to get used to and prepare Formatting Styles. In return, however, you can concentrate fully on your project afterwards and assign the Format Styles, such as headings, Paragraph and Character Styles, etc. in no time at all.

Back in the 1990s I bought quite a few books to help me understand how to get the best out of MS Office, Lotus Smartsuite and other programs.

Happily, the manuals for LO are freely available and sites like this exist to help people with specific issues

I would prefer using WPS office for opening pre existing files as I find it has better compatibility with files created in microsoft office but prefer libreoffice for creating new files. If i have both installed any pre existing files will open in libreoffice. Is there a way to make .docx and .xlsx files open in WPS office and .odt files to open in lbreoffice?

The following table lists the most current packages for the Office suite and for the individual applications. The Office suite includes all the individual applications, such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. All packages are 64-bit only. The build date is listed in parentheses, in a YYMMDD format, after the version number. The install package is used if you don't have the application already installed, while the update package is used to update an existing installation.

Collabora Online is excellent for enterprises that need a powerful office suite in the cloud, or on-premise, that protects their privacy and allows them to keep full control of their sensitive corporate data.

[UPDATE: Never mind, my mistake, it seems that LibreOffice may actually be supported on RHEL 9.1. What through me off was looking at the package "libreoffice" which is on rhel-7-server-optional-rpms.]

When installing RHEL 9.1, in the SOFTWARE SELECTION part I selected the "Workstation" option, and then one of the items that could be checked on the right was titled "Office Suite and Productivity" (subtitle: "A full-purpose office suite, and other productivity tools").

I am not sure that is true. I just checked an RHEL 9.1 ISO and it has several libreoffice packages such as libreoffice-base-7.1.8.1-7.el9.x86_64.rpm On a RHEL 9 server dnf group info Workstation lists an office-suite Optional Group anddnf group info office-suite lists several libreoffice packages. Of course the ability to install isn't the same thing as supported.
